so to figure out what the best screen protectors for the iphone 12s are we had our way with products from dbrand rhino shield flowlab shelrus mouse esr this angry gorilla looking thing otterbox zag speak and smartish whitestone and last and least belkin we spent over 450 dollars for all these screen protectors and scored them according to size installation tools oleophobic coding impact protections and scratch resistance these are our top five right monty and if you're wondering this is what 450 dollars worth of broken glass looks like real usage roll the review now some of you might be wondering do i still need a screen protector with the iphone 12 with its fancy ceramic shield and the short answer is i would say yes because the ceramic shield is definitely tougher than the iphone 11 version about 100 newtons in terms of force tougher that test i did a few weeks ago this test with the screen protectors on my iphone 12 mini i dropped a 35 pound bumper plate on this one didn't have a screen protector or case and you could definitely tell that the case is completely or the screen is completely bjorked ceramic shield didn't do much there but on the one that had a screen protector there is a bit of damage internally but the entire chassis hasn't been bent and so the screen protector along with the case definitely helped protect this iphone 12 mini from the 35 pound bumper plate so if you are thinking you might not need it if you are incredibly careful with your device maybe but even for me as a general user i still think a screen protector is a good idea anyways let's talk about sizing of the screen protectors for sizing it's simple we just measure top we measure bottom and sometimes we measure thickness in general the bigger the glass is the more protection is going to offer your device in terms of sheer size the rhino shield 3d impact was the largest followed by the full lab shellrisk d brand and most products the smallest one is actually the belkin ultra glass that's right apple's preferred supplier of glass produces the smallest screen protector but also is one of the most expensive in this video apple tax is great isn't it now i will admit that size doesn't matter because it will depend on the case that you're going to be using your device with brands who produce cases and screen protectors like otterbox will tend to tune their dimensions of their screen protectors to fit their cases that just makes sense now if you're really concerned about fits going with the smaller screen protector does make sense there's only two in this video that will fit almost every single case that i've come across the first one is this well apple tax product and the second one is the non-black edged full lap screen protector so after we size them up what do we do next puppy we'll take those off we checked out the installation tools now mobile reviews we've installed dozens upon dozens of screen protectors over the years and we still get issues with dust i've actually gotten used to having dust underneath the screen protectors because i go through so many of them that i just stopped carrying but for me looking at these products the quality of the installation tools is from my perspective a really good way to measure how much a company cares about that actual product in my mind the less you have to lift the screen protector off your device to try to remove the dust after you install it the better off you'll be for this part we looked at different trays the number and size of dust stickers and the types of wipes one of the things i really do appreciate about flow lab is the oversized dust stickers most brands will just give you a slightly larger sticker which isn't terribly useful because the action of like doing this on your screen generally deposits more dust than it actually pulls off from my perspective anyways so having that giant sticker from flowlab you just basically like slap it on you pull it off put the frame on you can put the sticker back on again to make sure that you know there's no dust it's just oh it's like it's such a simple thing but it works very well and every other company here does not do that so when it comes to installation tool flowlab comes out on top followed by the products from spigen and otterbox i know i know if you watch the iphone sc one i'm not a big fan of the otterbox ones but it's still better than nothing you just have to be very careful with the tray because it moves oddly enough the most expensive product in this video this shower is they've got the minimal amount of insulation tools so the 3d impact by random shield this is also terrible in terms of installation tools and actual insulation which is why it's not in the top three it's in the top five but not the top three alright monty what do we do next we tested the oleophobic coating now one of the most touted features of screen protectors second to the 9h hardness is the oleophobic coating every one of these products says it repels you know grease fingerprints and stuff but here's a dirty little secret that coating goes away after a few months don't believe me watch how high this droplet bounces on a new screen protector you know it's pretty cool what does the same droplet look like on my oldest screen protector which is the one on my iphone 7. one is springy the other goes splat it's the same for our iphone screens the coating generally goes away over time but the stronger the coating is the longer it's going to last so in order to figure the strength of the coating we had to build another little contraption called ruby now ruby is a simple contraption it's a wood ramp set at 30 degrees with a bunch of markings set at two centimeters apart we set a screen protector on the ramp we trickled some water drops onto it and filmed it all in slow motion then we import it into final cut pro and then we measure the number of frames it took to go from nine centimeters to two centimeters tell them how hard it was what tell them how hard it was to go through all that footage apparently it was really hard for valve to go through all that footage and that actually was a lot of work to go through all that footage so if you find this information this video useful get your stuff through my links this is not a sponsored channel i just wanted to know what the best one is and generally the best doesn't usually change from iphone version to iphone version but again i'm a reviewer and that influencer had to figure that out a hundred percent myself so if what i've done is useful to you get my stuff through my links that's a great way of supporting me or through patreon now out of the 17 products that we tested the screen protector that hated water the most was the shellr sapphire rx followed by the most hybrid glass and then the products from flowlab the autobox amplifier came in at a close fourth i do have to point out that between the shelrus and the amplified the difference is only five frames five frames we shot everything at 240 frames per second so five frames is a minuscule miniscule amount oddly enough the slowest product is the one that's not the smoothest is this zag anti glare which makes sense because there's like a frosted thing on it that was expected the slowest normal looking glass was actually this dbrand product which i don't have the box for here but it was the slowest by a lot now from our results it looks like there's two maybe three clean breaks in the results my guess is that the high performers are using coatings that are statically applied whereas in other ones they just kind of spray it on yeah some of these more expensive ones the oleophobic coating was very very disappointing now one of the things that we've kind of noticed over the last year is that a lot of these products are including antibacterial coatings now there's only two brands in this video that offer that and they are the flow lab as well as the zag products now we're gonna do a deep dive on these coatings in the next few months we went and bought a bunch of agar and some petri dishes so whenever we finish that video we'll put it right here here here all right after all the oleophobic stuff was tested we installed each product on the iphone to check the adhesive and oddly enough none did have an adhesion problem which makes sense given that the iphone 12s don't have a curved edge anymore now i personally didn't like the curved edge of the iphone 6 11s the straight edge from my perspective is a better design choice but hey that's just me but from a screen protector perspective is that having a curved edge means that you had to have a bit more adhesive and your adhesive had to be of good quality for example the esr screen protector i tested with my iphone sc had terrible adhesion but i had no issues with the esr ones for the iphone 12 because well gluing stuff on a flat surface is apparently very easy to do so that was the install not a big part in our entire process what do we do after that valve took all the screens and put them on acrylic sheets and then we smushed them with bertha 2.0 now if you've been with the channel for a while you'll know that we used to test with birth 1.0 which was a 200 gram steel ball that was very slow but it looked cool bertha 2.0 is way faster and just as it just looks industrial first of all there are technically three non-glass or hybrid glass products in this video you got the rhinos gel 3d impact the mouse hybrid glass screen protector and this thing that i bought off of amazon that has this gorilla on it apparently there's like nano ceramic technology i don't know i only bought this because it i needed some sort of control for these two products now i put all three of these products on a set of crap glass and tried to break them with bertha 2.0 the gorilla bs screen protector broke around 230 newtons the other two really didn't break bertha 2.0 has a limit of 500 newtons and both reached the limit before breaking from a straight impact perspective non-glass screen protectors definitely beats a regular glass now when it comes to normal glass the products from dbrand and esr they surprised me because well for my knowledge they're just normal tempered glass d brand comes into packet too yes it comes in a pack of three and yes i broke them all and they all broke a little higher than all the other ones that use aluminum silica glass but the sample size is very small i only had two of the d brand three of the esr and they didn't break consistently i broke the last four flow labs that i have and they all broke it around the same area whereas in the d brand broke really high and they're really low and the esr just kind of did this throughout the entire break process now the other thing worth noting is that the showrus product sapphire crystal by itself is a little more brittle than tempered glass the average of the first brakes with my shell risk screen protectors was about 350 newtons which is quite respectable but the average of the subsequent breaks after the first one was about 150. so the moment that you crack your sapphire screen protector the chance of it breaking even more goes up like a lot but you might be thinking that's a really good reason not to get a shell or screen protector because it's a very expensive product but there's one thing you need to realize is that scratches leads to cracks and this shell risk screen protector is very very scratch resistant in fact it's the king of scratch resistance so here are the overall rankings for impact i've already talked about the first five the spigen comes in at number six zag products at seven and eleven otterbox products at eight and ten and sandwich between the zag and otterbox spread is the belkin ultra class these products technically are made from better glass but during my impact test didn't really seem like it moving on to scratch resistance [Music] now when it comes to scratch if you've been with the channel long enough you know that i hammer on companies claiming to have nine hardness because there's two scales of hardness there's graphite in the most and the one that people default to is generally the most scale because that's what google spits out when you search 9h hardness the reality is that most glass scratches at a hardness of 6 on the mohs scale hi monty my monty sunglasses with the iphone 12 glass we kind of changed how we uh scored everything now we operated our microscope and so we went and looked at everything at 1200 times magnification and realized that this six pick scratches everything to a certain point it scratches everything i can crank on a really good screen protector they'll scratch it whatever the only product that didn't scratch was the shelrises which makes sense because it's sapphire crystal but the inability to control how hard i'm pressing with these mohs picks was something i've been struggling for a really long time because i can lightly just like do that one scratch and i really crank on it and then start scratching it's the same with the seven pick some of these screen protectors i can crank with the five and i don't know if i'm scratching it or breaking it um that's like there's that's inconsistency that i have and so with the iphone 12s i just went with three categories doesn't scratch scratches easily and it's hard to scratch i asked my wife who's not val val helps me my wife is at home no she's working today um she knows nothing about screen protectors i gave her a six pick i told her don't scratch the cracks tell me what you think and the average over results there was generally a split that happened with products like the double tempered ones from zag otterbox full app and belkin those products took a bit more effort to scratch the other products which was a single tempered glass they were much easier to scratch with the six pick the only product that did not show any scratching at six seven eight or nine was the shower sapphire x so remember scratches lead to cracks and if the product doesn't scratch there's a good chance that it's not going to crack only when it comes to normal glass screen protectors with these hybrid protectors that anger gorilla glass the rhino shield 3d impact and the most hybrid glass every one of these products scratches at around three and so there's a difference these things are way tougher but they scratch way easier so you gotta figure out which what is more important to you so before monty goes and shows you what the top five are he's going to lay him out here or technically i am i guess get your stuff through our links because this channel is unsponsored this video is on sponsors so we end up just having to buy stuff and break stuff so it gets pretty pricey but that's the right way to do a review from our perspective anyways so help us out by getting your stuff through our links so the top five after we compile all our rankings which we did based on a modified competition scoring system in general the higher ranked products were made from better glass that's not a surprise again with iphone accessories you get what you pay for the exception was the belkin ultra glass the flow lab nano armor comes out in first now there you go flew out you've got the otterbox amplify glass not the alpha shell sapphire action third rhino shield 3d impact and fourth and the zag glass elite plus in fifth now this is a pretty interesting spread in terms of products best bang for your buck is the flow lab the shell risk best scratch protection and as i said before no scratches no cracks the neat thing about the shell wrist is that if you put it on your iphone it actually cools much quicker so it the temperature the feel of your iphone screen actually changes with the show rest it's very nice so if you can afford it treat yourself with the showrest the 3d impact if you are terrible with your devices so you know you can get one for it it's the most impact resistant of this entire group also has the least amount of packaging it also scratches the easiest so you know you kind of there's the trade-off now between the amplify and the zag invisible shield i would actually go with the zag one even though the amplifier is better only because the warranty for the zag products you can if you buy from best buy you just walk right back into best buy and just get a new one through the warranty program so those are the top five products that we've come to these are going to be the five that we're probably going to recommend now there's a couple that are missing i've been told there's the super strong glass that is coming out from one of these brands that i'm going to test and there's a brand called panzer glass that didn't really make it into this video because they don't sell them in canada so it's been difficult to get my hands onto one of them but that's kind of all i got for this video questions comments leave them down there first time watching one of my videos click subscribe so that every single time i produce a video you get to see monty wearing italian sometimes with sunglasses his sunglasses he doesn't really like these so if you find this information this video useful get your stuff through my links this is not a sponsored channel this is not a sponsored video i'm not promoting one product i just want to know what the best one is and generally the best doesn't usually change from iphone version to iphone version but again i'm a reviewer and that influencer had to figure that out a hundred percent myself so if what i've done is useful to you get my stuff through my links that's a great way of supporting me or through patreon
