I Bought The Cheapest CAT 246B Skid Steer On Craigslist

Hey There YouTube Farm Reagan here welcome back to the channel um so today's gonna be kind of a different video not so much a different video but a video I wasn't planning on uh on making um I've mentioned it before but I watch uh Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace and um auctions and that sort of thing on a fairly fairly regular basis as I'm sure most of most of you guys do always looking for another deal another project that you really don't need but you would love to have um and that was kind of the case here a little bit um it is something that uh I could definitely use on the farm here um and I have wanted for a while but it wasn't on my uh you know my top 10 or top list of things that needed to get done or bought or purchased for the farm but it was on the list and um so when it came up um I had to act really really quick on it um otherwise it was gonna go away um I uh there was several other other buyers that were gonna buy this thing and um I just happened to get there get there first so we're sitting here in the truck um I'm gonna go ahead and shut the camera off and take you outside and show you what we got okay it's a little lock back here and you can see what we bought it's a cat skid steer uh supposedly it's a 2000 uh 246 B um I am not sure if the year is correct on this thing mainly because um if you look at that sticker it says 2006. so I honestly have no idea that you're on this thing um I have uh no idea anything about this machine I bought it basically as you see um I paid sixty five hundred dollars for this skid steer um and before you jump and say oh you got a screaming deal um let me show you the other thing that came with it on this pen over here you can see it's a trash can what's in the trash can well let me come up here and show you oh what is that yes those are engine parts so let me walk back to the back of the skid steer and I'll show you what it looks like figure out how to get this open I'm not used to a cat skid steer abuse to a bobcat or John Deere okay there she is oh there's parts missing there's parts missing here there's parts missing here this is some hoses no big deal things disconnected missing the alternator missing the manifold and the Turbo which is in the bucket um so what's the problem well you can't really see it you can sort of see it down in that hole right down in here um this is what you would call a um one of those uh demo blocks you know those engines they set up on stands and it's like a cutaway and you can see the internals of the engine work yeah that's what this engine is uh there's a big old hole in the block so it needs a new engine now where I'm at before you go oh my goodness you paid way too much for this machine with a bad engine in it um where I'm at skid steers are ridiculously expensive um looking at them I mean it's just it's outrageous what they're wanting for these things nowadays I think that is the case with any um any equipment nowadays um but even I mean I was pricing some out and uh there was a another machine it was a bobcat machine similar to this except older and it had engine engine problems and they wanted over double what I paid for this one so yes there is a risk on this one I have not heard it run I have no idea the hours on it um there's no battery in it so uh I the guy that I bought it from uh seemed honest we're gonna find out when we go uh taking this thing apart but he seems like an honest guy and uh he said that he did hear it run when it um when it put a hole in the block um to my knowledge what he said is it is not locked up um and from everything that I can see I don't see any Kibbles and bits laying around or through that hole because I kind of looked at it with a flashlight when I was over there and I could not see anything um that would cause a hole like that and what I find strange is it's on this side of the engine but it's near as I can tell this side of the block is perfectly fine so I don't know we're gonna find out he he claims that the hydraulic pump is fine in it um I would venture to guess it probably is um we're just gonna go with that right now um otherwise that'll be more expense that you got to spend on this thing but um oh well uh the biggest thing that um I like about this machine um is it's a wheeled machine now you go why on Earth would you want a wheeled machine when you could go get a track machine while I have a track machine I will show you that's the machine I have I have a Bobcat T300 with a cab and tracks um I like I like that machine it does extremely well it's got a bunch hours on it I don't remember how many hours are on it uh undercarriage is shot I've got to do an undercarriage on it that'll be that'll be a future project before hay season starts you'll get to see that on the channel we'll get to place the undercarriage on that but uh love my track machines and everything but um wheeled machines have a place um on the farm here so um so yeah um you're looking at it pretty much uh how I saw it and bought it I haven't even crawled around on this thing um very much to even see what uh what else is wrong what is all what is all there what is not um just walk around it's a pretty clean clean little machine I've never been around a cat like I said I've been around Bobcats and deers but uh never really a caterpillar um so this will be a new one a new one for me there's a little bit of damage up top there but uh what skid steer that's an open station like that does not have damage up there um It's seems like it's a little bit difficult aside from stepping on the bucket to get up here it's a little bit difficult to get up here but once you get up here it seems like there's a lot of room on these cap these cat machines um it's a joystick joystick machine um no idea about anything it snowed the other night and uh so I don't know it does have a foot throttle which um when you have one of those you get quickly quickly get spoiled if I can jump off of this thing without falling you quickly get spoiled when uh when you have one of those um very very nice I can't say enough about um about foot throttles there on a skid steer um let's see you got the hour meter up there and now the controls and such uh some sort of a radio is in it I guess it looks like um just an open station open station machine um but yeah other than that I honestly couldn't tell you anything anything about it other than what you're seeing right now um one thing when you're looking at machines like this um you notice how um that uh final is uh black and then you look back here and that one's yellow so little things you pick up on when you're looking at a machine that that final has been replaced at some point because all of them are black on the other side and so black I believe seems like is the color of all of these and then you've got one that's um you know yellow like that that's uh it's clearly been replaced and it looks like it hasn't been replaced that long I'm going to be perfectly honest looking at it um I don't know just just observation from looking at this thing um but yeah so that's the um this is the uh one of the next projects here like I said I'm not going to say the the very next project um because I got several other things that need to be done need to be done first um but uh you'll get to get to see this thing I don't know what it is about a cat skid steers I've I've been finding a lot of before I even got this machine I was finding a lot of videos um on people getting cat skid steers with bad engines I don't know I don't know if that's a trend for cap machines or if it's just there's so many people use cats and uh they get so many hours on them that they finally wear out and the motor goes I I I don't know um for how many hours is this thing's gonna run around the farm I'm not too worried about it um once I get the motor going it's got a it's a Mitsubishi um engine I don't know what the model is I just seen the tag and it said Mitsubishi on it so it doesn't have the Perkins or the the deuts or dudes or however you want to say that um that engine but uh supposedly a Perkins will drop right into this thing I've seen several different for this uh for the 246b I've seen several different engine configurations for these machines so if you happen to know or if you work at CAD or if you have one of these things or whatever and know the different engines drop me a comment as to what uh what your skid steer has or what you've seen I'd be I'd be really appreciated to hear your input on that because uh I'm not sure if I'm going to try to Source a block and rebuild this engine or if I'm just going to yank this whole engine out and find a Perkins or whatever and stick it in there um I don't know I have I have to pull the engine and and see another plus with uh cat and deer and a lot of other skid steers other than Bobcat is um yeah it's sitting right there you can take you can take and raise this up right here and get an engine hoist in there and fish that engine out very much unlike that machine if you want to get the engine out you that machine that particular machine you could probably fish one out with an engine hoist but like a T190 good luck you need a forklift to get the engine out because you got to slide it sideways because the engine is not sitting facing you like this it's sitting cockeyed and so you literally have to come in with a forklift and come underneath it and slide it out I lost an engine in T190 that I had a while back and that is how we had to remove the engine there was no other way to get it out of there maybe there's bottle cap mechanics here that can correct me if I'm wrong but there was just no way to lift it and hoist it hoisted in there so um so this should be pretty straightforward to remove the engine um I do want to get it get the engine removed I like I've got a spot in the shop for this I think I think it's short enough and I don't have to tip the cab up um I think I can stuff it in there that way it's out of the weather and I can pull things apart and and uh if it stays open for a little while um it's not going to hurt anything being inside the shop there and then we can actually see what the extent of the damage is and um if we can just Source a block and um you know rebuild it that's kind of what I would like to do just for simplicity's sake um or if we actually do indeed need to go and get a whole new whole new engine like a Perkins or something like that but uh you'll get to you'll get to see that oh here check this out here's the here's the data tag on this thing um what's this say does it say no it doesn't say anything about the year hmm interesting I'll have to uh I'll have to look this thing up or call Cat and uh see uh see what uh what the year is on this thing but uh yeah that's the uh that's a future project here so I'm gonna get some uh get some machines fired up and figure out how to get this crazy thing off the trailer here because it is locked up foreign foreign foreign foreign okay so we got it all uh Unchained ah flip these ramps okay now I get to see how strong uh my skid steer and mini excavator are my payloader is not at the farm right now and so this could be a little interesting to get this unloaded okay so we got the excavator over here and I'm gonna set you guys up here and uh where you get to watch me try to get this thing off the trailer here hopefully you can see that okay [Music] thank you foreign foreign foreign foreign the truck is uh sliding so I think what we're gonna have to do I don't know if this is gonna hold it or not and put some blocks under the tires all it's got to do is get off the back of the trailer and we'll be good okay we uh when we loaded it loaded it with a skid steer another skid steer and it was all snowy and icy and it slid on there actually pretty well but uh it's the afternoon and all that's melted off so now it's a little bit of a challenge so we'll see how this goes here foreign foreign foreign okay so we got it off the trailer as you saw there uh it took a little bit to uh to do but once we got it off it um you know once it started going it came off and it wasn't a big deal so uh so now I gotta figure out where I want this thing they can't quite go into the shop with it yet um that's where it's eventually gonna go so I don't know if I'm gonna drag it like how I have here with the excavator or if I'm gonna push it with the skid steer I might try pushing it with the skid steer it might be a little bit uh might be a little bit easier maybe not I might just continue dragging it I really wish I had Park extensions right now because uh this wouldn't be a problem I could just lift it right up with the forklift and carry it to wherever it needed to go so uh as far as the excavator that clattering that you're hearing while it's running uh I got a shield on the muffler that uh is broke loose and uh it's rattling around in there it's been that way for way too long uh that support machine I've had for oh I don't know how long now um I've put I think 3 000 hours on it something like that myself uh it had a couple thousand hours on it to begin with so uh it's been a great machine people they go well how does it dig well I don't really use it to dig I use it to uh do stuff like this it's the mobile shop crane um I mean I have used it to dig ditches and that sort of thing but uh it's been a it's been a great great machine couldn't recommend that particular model the 337 Bobcat uh enough it's got enough weight in the back end that it can move around a lot of stuff [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] well I got the measuring and uh the forks are long enough if the thing is sitting on the sitting on the ground so I went and got the uh the forklift here and uh we're gonna we're gonna carry it down to the shop it's uh lifted at no problem at all whatsoever it's actually really nice so we'll carry it down by the shop and set her down there will that worked extremely well I was very very pleased about that I was not um expecting that the forks were going to fit underneath there like they did so carried it down to the shop here absolutely no problems whatsoever um so there's the uh there's the forklift again uh very first video on this channel actually if you're new here um was uh of me putting this thing back together and uh yep I still have it haven't uh haven't done very much work on it I've used it here and there like what we did today to move the skid steer uh down here there will be another video on this thing at some point but it runs and functions at this right at it now and so uh I need to use it and I got other things I need to work on but I will come back to it I need to do a couple things on it yet so you'll be seeing it again here at some point so I think this is where I'm going to leave this video off at here um this wasn't exactly a planned uh a planned video um but when you find a good deal on something you got to kind of jump on it and I figured I'd take you guys along I wanted to film uh me going and getting a thing but it was so rushed early this morning that I didn't have time to get any cameras or anything set up so I just had to go get it as fast as I could so uh so yeah I don't know when the next time is we're going to be working on a skid steer um you might see it in the background of a few videos or you might see me moving in the shop as part of another video I don't know um it's it's gonna be probably uh towards the end of winter I don't know maybe I stopped my I might start working on it sooner than that but I've got a few other projects that are of higher priority ahead of this thing one of those uh I mentioned earlier is the trader build um the flatbed build is is still a high priority as soon as the weather warms up I have gotten a lot of good ideas from you guys I appreciate the feedback um I've got another project that is going to be in the next uh I don't know if it's going to be the next video or the video after that I don't know my scheduling kind of got all messed up here because of this
