Human Illness & Divine Healing 18 - Biblical Hinderances to Divine Healing ~ Dr. Lester Sumrall

I certainly would like to welcome all of our students to one of the most exciting series of lessons we've ever known a human illness and divine health we can teach this very strong because so many people are ill if there was nobody sick you really wouldn't have many people you know want to hear this kind of a message but with most of the world's sick and you go to two pagan countries are heathen countries you'd be amazed I mean we've lived in them for years and they're almost everybody sick and and they do everything that they can they got all the options on the on which weeds to use and which herbs we use in which leaves of a tree to use and how to concoct them together and beat them up put something else in it and yet they're dying and and they they need help but we come to the Lord Jesus Christ we come to the source of life the source of peace the source of joy had recognized that we know him in this lesson we are teaching biblical hindrances to divine healing now this this this is a an interesting study and it's just a little different maybe anything you've ever heard and I hope it's has a receptivity to it that you will be able to enjoy and third John 2 we have here the voice of God telling us that beloved I worship of all things that you may prosper and that you may be in health even as your soul prospereth and so here we have material blessing that you may prosper physical blessing that you may be in health and soul blessing spiritual soul blessing and that is that you'll have prosperity in your soul God is very interested in your material being and you know what I found out I listened carefully is this I've lived all over the world and I found out that only in an on occasional incidents where there's been an accident of some kind or some kind of a natural thing comes like a hurricane or flood or something or even a depression that in most instances outside of that poverty has to do with sin our almost half of the total people on relief in this country today are people that are divorced and and one part of the family can't make it because the other fan part of the family won't support you see well if we had all those people back together we would save billions of dollars we would correct the whole economic system if we got them all back together again correct the whole economic system really 50% of the total burden just by get them back together again well you start looking to the rest of them and you'll find embedded in them lying and cheating and adultery and and all kinds of evil things and you go back to it the problems of the world deeply and essentially it's a spiritual problem why you can't get that across in Washington DC but we're not in Washington bless God we're right here and and but what are some of the hindrances of reaching through to God some doctors estimate that even 75% of all sickness is psychosomatic well I was attending a journalist meeting for writers at Wheaton College in Illinois a doctor s I McMullen McMillan he's the author of none of these diseases a very cheap book that you could still get get in a very remarkable book written by a medical doctor we had adjoining rooms and in this in this in this school of journalism and in between us was the bathroom so we each had a separate sleeping room but we joined in the bathroom well I am kind of an early bird and so I got up and I was finished in the bathroom and then I left the door open and so but he came in to shave a yell through the door and he said hey Sam Rollo and I said yes sir doctor he says 90% of all the sick people that I know about a sick above the readers now that was said by 8 o'clock in the morning you know and had had begun to laugh if a preacher have said that either wouldn't paid an attention to him at all because after all he wasn't trained in that kind of thing but he was a medical doctor I want to tell us that emotional illness begins in the mind and begins in the emotions and that it moves from there into the physical part of a person and that in all originates and a power that he has to resist if he wanted if he had the power to resist now there are two kinds of healings there are gifts of healing and we've studied that in 1st Corinthians 12 and 9 to another's given with the same spirit to another the gifts of healing by the same spirit and then there are church healings given by position in the church James 5 and 14 says as in a sick among you let him call for the elders who have a position in the church and let them pray over him anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord and the prayer of faith shall say the signal Lord shall raise him up and if he committed in his sin they shall be forgiven him so our first statement is there is healing available to people what are some of the hindrances to a person receiving that healing I'll give them to you you know as quickly as I as I possibly can a hindrance to healing and let me say number one could be satanic of the devil a hindrance to it and Daniel 10 and 12 it says then he said unto me fear not Daniel for from the first day that thou did is seek set thine heart to understand and to chasten that set before thy God thy words were heard and I am come for thy words but the Prince of the kingdom of Persia Satan was ruling and dominating and that area the world at that moment because it was a chief Empire on the face of the earth he was stood me one and twenty days 21 days he fought in the cosmic area of between between the devil who was a prince in the power of the air and an archangel but lo Michael one of the chief Prince's came to help me and I remained there I mean they were the kings of Persia and so here we have a hindrance to prayer coming from a satanic force now we are sure that if it was then it is now so that could be one hindrance let's uh let's block that one down another one can be a lack of a real desire when we seek to be healed I have known people that pray too casually and and they they say well if the Lord wants to hear me he well no he won't do that the Lord never heals anybody if they want to be healed the Lord heals you because you have faith to be healed the Lord doesn't even heed you because you've been teaching Sunday school for 21 years he doesn't run a merit system that when you get so many marriage to get healed no he doesn't do it he'll heal the Senate when sometimes a Sunday school teacher doesn't get it because of Sunday school teacher says he ought to hear me I've been teaching for 10 years well he doesn't heal you on the basis of 10 years of teaching he hears you where you say Lord I've got faith in you I believe in you and I accept your healing he says I respond you see and you get it and so the response of God is always to direct faith and not on a credit system of any kind that we might we might want our selves jesus said in mark 11:24 I say unto you what what things soever you desire when you pray believe that you receive them and you shall have them so you say there's the word desire in there the desire is as strong as you want to make it when people desire things very strong they'll go to the ends of the earth to receive it when you desire and it is when you pray you shall receive them and that's a promise from the Lord a hindrance to healing in the third place I could be a sin that's in a person's life as their 59 and 2 says your iniquities have separated between you and your God and now when God says that you got to believe it your sins have hid his face from you that he will not hear there are times when it will happen it happened in my own life and so I know it can happen that I couldn't get healing because I was a sinner I was I was separated from God by my iniquities and in Matthew 13 and 15 and the word of the Lord says this people's heart is waxed gross jesus knew what he was talking about the ears are dull of hearing their eyes they have closed lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with the ears and should understand with the hearts and should be converted and I excuse me and I should heal them you see here was a people whose Hart had whacked gross full of evil and and full of sin and in psalm 66 and verse 18 it says if I regard iniquity in my heart the Lord will not hear me I think people ought to get to know that one and in a most substantial way the next one hindrance to healing can be unbelief I just saying it can't be in Matthew 13 and 15 he did not many miracle mighty works there because of their unbelief that was in his hometown I had lived there over 30 years or about 30 years and they didn't have any faith yet he was right there walked among them they didn't have any faith yet he did not many miracles a mighty works there because of their unbelief in mark chapter 6 verse 5 and he could not dare do any mighty work say that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk and He healed them unbelief as a mighty force it's a mighty force and in many instances the Lord Jesus took people and put him out of the room he wouldn't let him be in the presence of when he was praying they were so full of unbelief Romans 10:17 says faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God and so when we get the Word of God moving and functioning a healing healing proceeds and healing takes place but God cannot heal people when there's unbelief if you say God can't do it you're right for you he cannot if you says God can do it yes for you he can do it if you know that's true saving a hindrance to healing and and now we're getting right down to the nitty-gritty that I want to get to a hinders to healing is an unforgiving spirit now that's the reason why so many people do not get healed that should be healed there ought to be healed but God cannot do it because of an unforgiving spirit in Matthew's Gospel chapter 6 verse 14 if you forgive men their trespasses your father heavenly Father will also forgive you you your trespasses but if you forgive not men their trespasses neither will your Father forgive your trespasses that's strong enough that is talk if you cannot forgive others then God cannot forgive you you just can't move in on this and there's a spirit of forgiveness comes into your heart Matthew and five at verse 23 the Lord Jesus said if therefore but if thou bring thy gift to the altar you might see the church up to the altar and and remember that I brother hath taught against they leave your gift before the altar and go your way be reconciled to your brother and then come and offer thy gift this means that your offering is not receptive before God in a profitable way I because you have hardness in your heart or an unforgiving spirit so when a person is sick ask him to read these things listen do you have an unforgiving spirit have you got somebody back there that you just hate if you've got somebody that you always talking about so they treated you wrong they treated your own they treated you wrong then you are not a candidate for healing because the Bible says so you're not a candidate for healing a hindrance to healing can be a violation of God's physical laws in Philippians four and five and let your moderation be known to all men and you you break physical laws and you'll suffer for it you just got to remember that there are physical laws and you're confined to them hey you don't you don't have your immortal body yet and you can find that out pretty quick you know that we still in our physical being and that we must not violate the laws that God has laid down and be kind to them and be gracious to them and then you can be blessed by them a hindrance to healing can be a violation of moral laws in Deuteronomy 28 and 15 but it should come to pass if I will not hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God to observe to do all his Commandments and his statutes which I commanded to thee this day all these curses shall be upon you and overtake you that's something that if you don't keep the voice of the LORD thy God and obey Him he said Christmas should that be in the city of Christmas sir shall I be in the field curse of them in the basket and the store Christian should be the fruit of thy body and the fruit of that land the increase of that kind of about sheep in that a mess just because of transgression all those problems curses shall I be when I goes to incur sir shall I be and I go stop and then you wonder why Russia can have a harvest hey you won't ever have a good harvest they hadn't had one in years no matter what to do how scientific they're they can't have a harvest they did they just go bum every year and after we and the Christian people have to feed them is that something the largest sin upon you the curse and the vexation the review and all that I'll say tooth on hand to do until they'll be destroyed until thou perish quickly because of the wickedness of that doings work wherefore thou has forsaken me the Lord shall make the pestilence to cleave unto thee until thou be consumed from off the land whether thy goes to possess it the Lord shall smite thee with consumption of a fever with inflammation with extreme burning with a sword with a blasting with me or do and they should pursue thee until that perish and that's what God has said and and God means it and that people this world will have to know it that's reason I tell you that if every doctor in the world if every human man in the world was a doctor and if every human woman in the world was a nurse and if every house on the face of the earth or the hospital everybody still be sick because it's not physical after all it's a spiritual problem and when man gets right with God he's gonna find himself a healthier person than he ever was before can you say Amen all right another hindrance to bit you're being healed it's covetousness and in Malachi 3:8 and 10 says will a man Rob God but you probably you say we're and if we robbed you God says and tithes and offerings you accursed for the curse you see now the man didn't say it the church didn't say it you've robbed me he said your whole nation is done it he could see that to this nation he then he says bring all my ties and into my storehouse and that there may be meat in mine house and prove me now herewith saith the Lord of Hosts if I will not open you the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing that you should not have ruin up room enough is on the inside room enough that you can receive it and so we can have within our hearts covetousness to take from God what belongs to God and in doing that we bring upon ourselves problems and sorrows and sicknesses and all kinds of things that God does not want us to have some further causes of our sickness could be adultery 1st Corinthians 3:17 if a man defile the temple of God him shall God destroy for the temple of God is holy which temple ye are we could go into that for a long long time I have a large clipping that I cut from a national newspaper where there is a very special and particular disease in this country that is only known among homosexuals and cannot be cured you you can you can think you can mess up the laws of God if you wish to but I wish to assure you that when you do you're going to cause problems to come into your family and you can go out and lose your virginity and go out and commit adultery if you want to but God says if you defile this temple that God will destroy and destruction comes usually by sickness on the body and in 1st Corinthians 6:18 the Apostle said flee fornication ever sin that a man doeth is without the body but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body and many people today are suffering all kinds of diseases in this country of ours God would only be able to know the diseases in this country that people are suffering because of immoralities immoralities both in the birth of children and the lives of women and men in this nation of ours you don't break God's laws and get off at it you just think you do you you don't you have to face them all over again let's go to one here that is very near to many of us a hindrance to healing that could be grudges or resentments in our hearts in 1st Peter 3 and 4 but let it let it be the hidden man of the heart in that which is not corruptible even the ornament of a meek and a quiet spirit which in the sight of God is of great price then he says husbands dwell with them according to knowledge giving honor unto your wife as unto the weaker vessel and as being heirs together of the grace of life that your prayers be not hindered if you're going to have resentments and grudges and hatreds in your heart towards your family and towards your children to work your in-laws a you're gonna gonna hinder what God wants to do for you physically oh you say this don't make it a difference what do you better read the Bible again because it's talking to us here for he that will love life this is verse 10 and see good days let every frame his tongue from evil you see speaking about other people and his lips that they speak no guile you see let it hate evil and do good let him seek peace and insu piece for the eyes of the Lord over the righteous his ears open under their prayers but the face of the Lord has against them that do even so a spirit of grudges is so easy to have one you know and in resentments against other people they burn within you and you don't really realize what they're doing is destroying your health and you can't and you say Oh Lord heal me knee says well I'd have to get that out of there first if I heared you you'd get sick again yeah I got to get that out of there first now get that out of there and then you'll be all right you'll get well you see many times when you get your insides happy and peaceful and joyful you automatically get healing in your body it brings automatic healing to other parts of your body so God wants us not to have these things a further hindrance to healing can be going away from God we call it backsliding Jesus said in John 5 and 14 after Jesus finding him in a temple and said to the man that he had healed behold art made whole and they said said no more lest a worse thing come upon you you see that there are people that have the worst things upon them because they went back and sin I've met people that were wonderfully healed of God and we're not living a turrible life after that just probably a few years and see something worse than that hit them then they say Oh Lord heal me O Lord heal me and he says I don't hear you at all I can't hear you no a hindrance can be a going backwards when God has done something great for you and you don't appreciate it I make it a practice in my life every day to confess the healings that God has put in my body I suppose people get tired of it and a few people that go with me out on the on the trail when I go from city to city they hear the same thing almost every place and I get to feeling sorry for them only I'm not talking to them and English if they want to I'm talking to the people that never heard it before you see and I have to give my testimony and in giving my testimony I received your life and your strength at that moment I get renewed by giving my testimony I urge you in Jesus name tell it whatever God has done for you witness to it and don't don't don't stop anywhere but do it and remember you come under great responsibility if God's done a big miracle for you you have a personal responsibility that if you go back on that Jesus himself said you can receive something worse than you had before a hindrance to your healing can be and never setting a specific and a positive time for your healing I've seen so many people say well yeah I'm gonna get here someday and I feel so sorry for the masses that they won't ever come that they won't ever come yeah I'm gonna get it someday what if you said that to your tummy I'm gonna give you some food someday and give out on you you know it's like what if you said that to your first I'll take a drink of water someday what would your dad you see you must settle time this is my time I'm going to be healed now the little woman that ran after Jesus she had already said in our heart when I touch the hem of His garment I am going to be here you see she set a spot and a time that you couldn't got her here dinner where else she wouldn't have accepted it if you'd got her feeling better she did going back two inches away night I don't even healed yet I hadn't touched him yet she said a specific place and time she says when I get to him and I touched the hem of his garment at that point I am healed and the disciples couldn't understand it they this all the people jostling up against Jesus and he turned his since life is gone out of me virtue has proceeded from me and this is all all these people who are you what you expect and he turned around and the other woman said it's me he says when I touch the hem of your garment I was healed so when you want healing from God set a time for it eight o'clock in the morning I am healed and David tried the morning dance all over the room and thank God for it are you here or not all right one reason for people not being here when they pray is that they don't set a time for it in Mark 11 2014 said I say unto you what things soever you desire when ye pray but that ye receive them and ye shall have them and and so that is what we're supposed to do when we when we need a mighty healing from our Lord and Savior now I wouldn't want our class to feel or to think that I had the answer to every human problem because that would be erroneous and it would be unfair for me to have it and you not to have it I'm as human as you are I learn every day I'm seeking to learn more all the time what I do know I'll share and the things that I say are the things that I have I have found in the Word of God and the things that I have lived with for all these years and the two of them go together you know the Word of God plus experience makes a a very wonderful and remarkable a situation and these we wish to give to you there are basic reasons why some people are not healed and these are not all of them this is not exhaustive this is an idea of some reasons why some people are not healed but on the other hand they may just be waiting for you to get there and when you do lay your hand on them and and I don't base any prayer on these conditions I pray for everybody exactly the same and the condition is their problem with God it's their problem is not with me and really I don't even want a confession of their problem just confess it to Jesus and that will be quite alright we know there is a deliverance we know there is a healing for every one of us there's a deliverance for anyone who can meet God's conditions God wants to heal and James 5:14 it says is any say any all right is any sick among you this is to the total church let him or her call now you ought to put a circle there around our part of the country your best friends can get sick and go to the hospital and be back home before you find out about it did you hear what I said we often get the notice of the hospital in our office here after the people already back home they said you there ever so-and-so in the hospital and we've already been to the hospital they're already back home now that this was slow getting it out to you let him call say call yeah we don't forget that call for the elders of the church and let them pray over him now this is when your your heel buying ordinance of the Bible the elder daughter that really have to have any superpower anything he just has to have obedience let him call for the elders of the church let him pray over him anointing him with oil which is a type of the Holy Spirit in the name of God and the prayer of faith saying I believe I trust right now I received shall say this thing the Lord not the man shall raise him up if he have committed sins they shall be forgiven him look at the link between the healing and the person's life they shall be forgiven him confess your faults one to another pretty one for another that you may be healed and don't forget those to confess your faults one to another pray one for that you may be here because the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much I tell you I like that James 5 14 to 16 how about you I mean there's specific law and order there there's specific regulation there and when it's obeying when it's obeyed but if you keep it a secret and you keep it at home and you don't do this then the church is not really responsible they don't know anything about it let's carry out the ordinance of the word of the Lord and let it work in our hearts and lives God said to Moses in Exodus chapter 15 these magnificent words that we all know he says if you are diligently hurt hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God the Jehovah thy God and if you will do that which is right in Jehovah sight and you will give ear to Jehovah's commandments and you will keep all of jehovah's statutes then i will put none of these diseases upon thee which have been brought upon the Egyptians for I am Jehovah Rapha oh I feel something I am Jehovah Rapha I am Jehovah that healeth you I am a healing God I am the God that healeth you it's very significant that we accept him as a saviour to heal our souls and spirits and a healer to heal our bodies the Lord Jesus went into all their towns and the cities of about him teaching and preaching and healing that was a three-fold dynamic Ministry of the master it can be your threefold life teaching and preaching and healing
