HST Shootout! 124gr vs 147gr 9mm Federal HST Ballistic Gel Test From a Taurus GX4! Which is BEST?

what's up y'all as you can see behind me i'm still out here at the range doing some testing been out here all day doing a bunch of jelly testing this is gonna be the last one for today for my jail so full i ain't gonna be able to see what's going on in here it's already pretty full now i've done several done a couple of 22 i've done a 22lr 22 magnum uh i've done some 38 special and i've done some 45 tumble upon impact 45 acps so i think we got just enough left on the front half of this block here though to get done what we need to get done on this test here so what we're doing this time is something several people have asked for and that's the federal hst now we've done some federal hst testing in the past with hst versus some other rounds but this time we're going to put hst against hst so what we're going to do is we got the 124 grain hst and then we got the 147 grain hst so we're going to test both of these out today and see the difference in them and what we're going to run them through is the little three inch taurus gx4 so it'll be very interesting to see how these two different ways perform out of a little micro carry like this you know these are very popular these days these little small micro nines so figure this is a good testimonial for sure but anyway that's what we're testing today let me get all this stuff out of the way and get it set up and get started all right y'all if y'all familiar with these tests y'all know the drill we're gonna get the speed on both these rounds first i'm just gonna do a two round average i ain't slinging hsts out into the wild blue yonder just for the sake of a few more rounds so gonna do a two-round average we'll start with the 124s first see what they moving here we go got 10 12. nothing on that and 10 18s let's see what the average is on that all right so the two round average on the 124 grain hsts is 1015 feet per second now let's switch over to them 147 and see what they're moving all right let's see what these 147s are doing here we go hopefully we won't uh we won't get no errors and waste up more ammo for no reason 907 and 8.99 so let's see what the average on that is all right the two round average on 147 grain hsts was 903 and if you remember the 124s it was a thousand fifteen so what do we got uh 112 feet per second difference the the 124s are moving 112 feet per second faster so not a whole lot of difference but pretty decent that's about 10 on it so that is pretty decent i reckon so let me get this stuff out of the way y'all know what time it is all right y'all it's hst jelly time uh now these blocks are kind of full of y'all can see with tracks but i think they got enough room up in that front side if i can put these shots in the right place that we can see what's going on but let's see what we can do y'all we're starting out with the 124 grainer so here we go all right that was a good hit there pretty good placement let's go down there and see what happened all right y'all you can see that one really good so happy with that shot for sure i wanted to kind of put it a little bit higher though because it's going to be a little bit tough now i want to try to put this one underneath that one but it's going to be sketchy because i just can't i can't really get low enough where i'm at right here uh but i'll try and we'll see what happens y'all here we go this is the 147 grainer ah i think that might have came out the side on us let me go check yeah that one came out the side i'm just trying to be so i'm trying to be so picky where i put these things and get them over far enough out of that other stuff and then it just that jail just has a mind of its own sometimes so actually i'm gonna try to switch up here and go up higher now i'm gonna try to go up above and to the right of that first shot so let's see what we get 147 again y'all see i think that almost went right in the exact same spot as the first one which is what we didn't want so let me go down there check it out actually that was pretty decent placement that's about a half of an inch off of the entrance of that first one uh the problem is it kind of curved down and then ended up you can see the projectiles ended up almost on top of each other uh that being said you can still see the wound channel real good i'll give you all several different angles so we can check it out but i can just tell you right now and now of course the sun's gonna come out and mess up the picture but i can just tell you right now this weight had virtually no difference in the in the performance of these projectiles they you can see they're literally right there side by side where they stopped as far as penetration i can see without pulling them which i'm going to pull them but the expansion is great on both of them wound channel is excellent on both of these things it's almost identical the wound channels all the way down almost identical mirror image wound channels from these two different weights but honestly i didn't expect anything different these hsts are absolutely some of the best rounds i've tested out of anything i've tested so far hsts and v crowns as far as just your standard hollow points have been two of the best performing rounds i've tested but let's see what the penetration is on these exactly get a measurement on them all right y'all so the penetration on these things are 14 and a half inches right at 14 and a half inches and that's on both of them they're literally side by side there is no difference in the penetration maybe an eighth of an inch but i mean it's it's literally nothing so 14 and a half inches of penetration on both of them so let me get y'all some different views overhead so you can see these wound channels a little better and then we'll pull these projectiles all right y'all so as you can see this is where the first one went in the 124 and this is where the 147 went in so 124 147 as you can see from the top you can make out the separate wound channels now they're they're absolutely identical you cannot tell the difference between these wound channels they're almost exactly the same all the way down the projectiles landed almost the exact same spot i mean this is versatile virtually identical you would think that these were both two of the same exact projectiles so i don't know if you can see much from this angle hey it's on the it's on the front side over there but like i say projectiles are stacked up right right on top of each other there i think that overhead is the best view but i mean these wound channels i mean you can see right there that's the best example there you can see where they came in separate there but kind of merged up there towards the end but like i say almost identical all right y'all let me show you what we got for the projectiles as you can see from the front as far as expansion wise there there is no difference in these these are exactly the same uh if maybe there might be a 30 seconds or a 64th of an inch bigger on this 147 right here just because it had more lead in it to begin with but both of them expanded very nicely i mean excellent expansion on these things these hsts like i say these are some of my favorite rounds i've tested so far um so as you can see excellent expansion on both of them expanded just exactly like they were supposed to uh the only reason you can tell the difference really is you can see this one this is the 147 so it had more lead to begin with as you can see there 147 124 but again the expansion is is identical i mean these things are excellent excellent expansion on both of these rounds i mean basically what that tells me is these hsts are just made to run in pretty much anything uh that was a three inch barrel so anything from micro and and the the performance is just going to get better from there the longer the barrel gets so excellent excellent rounds i mean i think we all knew that hst was kind of the cream of the crop as far as just hollow point defensive rounds and this test just shows it again excellent excellent performance out of these rounds all right y'all another jelly test in the book sun's going down behind the trees the crazy shadows and stuff's messing up the picture so this is it for today i'm man to pack up and get out of here this is a good one though this test here on the hst's i think we all know that hst is top of the line as far as defensive ammo goes so this test really wasn't to see how well they performed because i already know they are excellent these hsts are excellent rounds this one was more of does the 124s perform better than the 147 especially out of a shorter barrel like this and the answer is absolutely not they both perform excellent almost identical same exact penetration same exact expansion granted you got a little a little more weight left on that 147 because it started with more weight but um i think the conclusion on this one is if if you deciding on which one to use it's whichever one you can get your hands on whichever one you got is just as good as the other one these rounds are absolutely terrific rounds absolutely fantastic but let me know
