here we are in the redwood forest you're just in time for a tour of one of my favorite places the little treehouse in the forest by the ocean so peaceful and so quiet a perfect place to gently drift off to sleep before we begin our tour it's nice to start with a wind down exercise tonight's wind down is an exercise we call noting it helps to soothe the mind and once you've learnt it you can even use it if you wake up in the night we're going to be counting our breaths and then just gently noting thoughts and feelings as they arise we're not trying to change them we're simply labeling them thinking as thinking healing as healing you may sound incredibly simple but it can help to create distance between ourselves and the thought ourselves and the feeling so we don't get so involved in it that in turn creates a more restful state of mind in other words the perfect state of mind for gentle restful sleep so to begin with just take a moment or two to get comfortable make sure you're nice and cool just starting with some nice big deep breaths breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth and with the next out-breath allow the breath to return to its natural rhythm in and out through the nose and just feeling the weight of the body pressing down into your bed and in your own time starting to count the breaths as they pass one with the rise - with the fall just up to a count of ten when you get to ten you can stop and start again at one and remember any time you get distracted the moment you realize you're distracted by thoughts simply note it thinking and return to the breath more if the feeling arises feeling and return to the breath that noting is very gentle not harsh at all think of it like a feather just gently touching the surface of a crystal glass I'm going to give you a few moments just to keep counting the breath and noting any thoughts and feelings that arise that's great the branches of the Redwood are so sturdy that they can support a few extra things along with the treehouse there's a swing safely tied to the sunny side of the tree it is a smooth plank of plywood attached to the branch by long strands of yellow room perhaps the wood was lactoferrin building the treehouse it's nice to think that every piece has its own purpose you can hold on to the Rope as you swing through the trees you might feel the wind in your hair like the trees feel the wind and their leaves but now the swing only slowly drifts from a natural breeze there are tracks worn into the dirt and fallen leaves beneath the swing where feet have brushed against the ground a hammock sways back and forth in the same gentle breeze on the shady side of the tree this hammock is made from thick cords of white rope woven together you can lie here looking out into the forest or the feel or simply hop into the branches of the redwood you can breathe with the rhythm of the forest winds back and forth back and forth the window next to the old armchair in the treehouse that window overlooks the west yellow curtains order this window one on each side the lace at the bottom of the yellow curtains brushes up against the wall with the breeze making saw whispery sounds peering out of the window you can see the grassy field along the edge of the forest you can see fences and rooftops here and there and you can imagine a path from the treehouse down through the village crossing backyards and creeks all the way down the dirt roads over the hills across the yellow sand to the ocean the ocean looks like a cobalt ribbon across the horizon scattered across the sea are the white verses that you know to be waves from here you can just hear the waves that going back to you from the water look out of any window in the treehouse and look above lifting your gaze to the tops of the redwoods and beyond cumulonimbus clouds drift over the forest cumulonimbus is a big word but doesn't it feel perfect to describe clouds so big and fluffy the Sun spills over the edges of these clouds it seems as if the clouds are embroidered with golden thread some of the light leaps over the clouds falling on to the forest and rays like the Sun has unrolled great spools of yellow silk this redwood forest as large handle green spires of trees tower over you and they wobble in the breeze it's hard to believe that the massive redwood trunks grow and taper off into branches no bigger than a finger but here they are anyway some of the trees are so tall that there are whole neighborhoods of plants and animals in the upper canopies supported by the dense redwood branches that's why you can see the curling fronds of fern plants waving down at you the ferns are brighter than the shadowed redwood leaves with green all around you the stream of monarch butterflies really stands out they fly through the open spaces of the forest happy to be in a warm place for the summer their wings are vibrant orange with black lines Criss crossing the color like a stained-glass window an old strong redwood carries the treehouse as gently as you would carry a precious marble if the trunk of the redwood were a round kitchen table then 15 people would be able to sit around it comfortably and probably have a splendid feast but this tree still grows adding another layer of a red Brown bar every year if you touch the wood your hands will come away covered in the same reddish dust and maybe a bit of sticky amber sap as well the bark of the tree is ridged like the edges of a coin around the lower levels the branches are quite thick after all those branches support the treehouse it would even be easy to climb the redwood to a certain height simple as climbing a ladder however the branches are thin the closer that you get to the top of the tree those branches best saved the bugs and birds this is an evergreen tree that means that the redwood stays green year-round in each season today is no different the leaves along the many branches are lively and green they spread from the tree in clumps and flat needles whether in the tree house were perched up in the branches the smell of the Redwood holds over you and earthy way imagine this as much as you can see of the redwood tree it's only half the story its roots stretch far below the rich soil of the forest the tree has to be strong enough to pull water and vitamins from the ground all the way to the top and to the edges of every branch knowing that the redwood has to work that hard just to stand still holding the tree house must be quite easy inside of the treehouse the window facing the east has one green curtain the color of a ripe pear the curtain is big enough to cover the whole window but right now it is tied to one side with a pink ribbon from the Eastern window the field and the forest seemed to stretch on and on tall ancient redwoods on one side a new short grass on the other in the grass beneath the treehouse there are patches of clover and daisies the daisies grow many tiny white petals around a centre of yellow pollen altogether the flower is no bigger than your thumbnail meanwhile the clover have round little leaves bunched around in stock boom bees are emeral with a fuzzy splatter of light green in the middle of each leaf there's usually only three weaves on each clover plant but it's common to find four-leaf clovers in the patches of grass around tree house you can spend all afternoon looking for these lucky clovers if you wish carefully counting leaves as cozy as the treehouse is the local birds prefer to perch on the branches outside a marble marl that sits on a mossy limb his feathers are mostly black with puffs and polka dots of white feathers around his neck and wings and tummy this pattern helps him blend into the dappled shadows of the forest the morrow light is really a sea bird but he comes to the redwoods to rest after swooping and diving over the ocean shady trees and fresh air make this forest a great place to take a break Marlette coos to himself before dozing off higher up in the tree a Warbler bounces around a thinner twigs of the tree this bird has a gray body with black and white wings similar to the Mara led by the Warbler also has a bright yellow face as though the bird ate too much lemon cake and didn't wipe the crumbs away today she's happy to whistle as she jumps from branch to branch these bird songs add to the silvery sounds of the wind chimes and the leaves rustling against each other and the percussion of your own footsteps if you wanted to walk in the forest tiny pinecones from the redwoods are strewn across the ground it's hard to believe that these tiny prickly things no bigger than a ping-pong ball can grow into massive trees all around you some of these redwoods are hundreds of feet tall yet you can hold their pinecones in the palm of your hand imagine all the patience that those pinecones must hold green leaves from the redwoods cushion the earth around the treehouse it's soft to walk on even with bare feet you can hear the crunch crunch of twigs underneath your stamps imagine that floor of the forest is a lush intricate carpet every leaf and branch that falls from the trees is another stitch the redwoods weave together the carpet of the forest floor let's see what else is down there sunlight cascades down as well brightening the forest floor in some places casting shadows and others if you look closely you can see bird feathers adding pops of color there's a few long blue feathers from a jay and some yellow pops from Warblers and bits of white fluff from local owls - there are footsteps in the forest from people who visit the redwoods they weave trails through the trees and over time those pathways become part of the forests pattern your own footsteps are part of the horst floor too the treehouse was built on to the thick lower branches of the redwood canopy it's a rectangular tree house painted turquoise to stand out in the forest the silver shingles of the slanted roof add a nice touch from the outside the treehouse looks like a present wrapped in blue paper with a shimmering bow on top the Redwood that holds the treehouse is the Redwood closest to the grassy field on the edge of the forest a wooden ladder leads up from the grass to the door the ladder has ten rungs evenly spaced it's very easy and safe to climb up the ladder even while carrying some apples or a stack of books oh there's also a basket and a rope pulley attached to one of the windows just for that purpose you can put your things in the basket on the ground and then pull the rope once you're inside the treehouse to bring the basket up to you there are two windows on the left and right sides of this little room wind chimes hang above the treehouse door as well these skinny metal tubes twinkle against each other as the breeze moves them it's impossible to predict how the sweet Bell like sounds will change and that is part of their beauty besides from the ladder and basket pulley the treehouse really looks like a normal small cottage you can imagine that the treehouse has simply blown into the red one like a dandelion seed floating in the air
