hi everybody and welcome back to my channel if you're new here my name is Alicia and I'm the owner of Alicia be creative today I'm back with a video that is not necessarily a Tumblr tutorial although we will be working with a cup today but I'm going to show you how to use and work with water slide so I get lots of questions in the comments section of a lot of my videos on different tips and techniques that I can share or show people with regards to using and working with water slide So today we're going to be using both white and clear water slide and I'm going to give you some tips and tricks on the things that I have found that work best for me what sealers I use what are some important things to know when working with water slide as well as how to not only seal your water slides but also how to adhere them and print them from your print settings so I hope today is a very informative video for you of course everything that I do use in today's video that will all be listed and linked down in the description box down below you can even find some discount codes there for you in case you're looking to save a little bit of extra money as well before you leave be sure to give this video a huge Thumbs Up And subscribe to my channel it helps my Channel out a lot but without further Ado let's go ahead and jump right into today's video [Music] okay so I'm in a Google Docs and we're going to get our document set up here to be able to get these printed so you could print your documents in qriket design space or silhouette I personally prefer to use Google Docs because I can use more of the sheet of water slide that I'm working with and be able to maximize the amount of space covered on my piece of water slide so the first thing I do when I get into Google Docs is I like to change the landscape depending on what I'm Printing and I'm also going to change the margins with the with the page set up so I'm going to first change the margins here to be 0.5 inches wide but then you're going to see as we move through this section of the video that I end up changing my margins to be zero because I end up just putting the floral background that's going to be printed on Clear Water Slide attached to the other decal sheet we're using so now I'm going to go ahead and drag and drop my image in so I just downloaded that from my email and now I've dragged that from that bottom section there into the document here and now I'm just going to make this a little bit smaller because obviously it came in a little bit large and the first thing I noticed is that this is not really going to give me the true size of my decal so I'm going to go ahead and take the opportunity now to crop this image to cut out any of that white background that way I can make sure I have a better estimation of what the size of my decal is actually going to be so once I've sized that to or cropped that rather to fit around the decal image we're using I'm going to go to the image options and I'm going to change the size of this to be about three inches so three inches wide is going to be enough of a good size for us to use for the tumbler that we're putting this on and then once I'm satisfied I'm just going to copy and paste multiple of these onto this document so that I am maximizing the amount of water slide I'm using when I print on this so This decal here that I created will be available my Etsy shop and we're going to print this sheet specifically on white water slide I'm now going to go ahead and drag in the second image which I've also created in procreate and will be available on my Etsy shop it's a beautiful floral background with a lot of different pink and red uh roses and so for this document this is going to be a full sheet of water slide and so I want to stretch this and adapt this to fit the sheet of paper we're working on here okay so I'm just going to size this accordingly but because I knew I was printing on I wanted to print the full sheet of Waterside this is why I end up going back to my page setup and changing my margins to be zero that way I'm printing edge to edge so this floral image is going to be printed on clear water slide so that we can see through the image it's transparent enough and light enough that we'll be able to see through the image and be able to pick up all the beautiful glitter that's underneath the image that we put this underneath the tumbler that we put this on so after I'm satisfied with that I'm just going to make sure that I have sized that accordingly that it's fit edge to edge on that sheet there so I get again the maximized amount of space that I am utilizing on my water slide so obviously we know water slide paper is isn't necessarily the cheapest thing so I like to make sure that when I am going to be using water slide that I print a bunch of different decals or I print multiples of the same decal that way I'm really maximizing what I'm using once I've adjusted my image once I've adjusted my margins back to zero now you'll notice that this is now fitting edge to edge so I'm just going to drag that corner so that it fits from the top Edge to the bottom corner Edge that way is literally covering the entire sheet of water slide and that way I have a minimal white space that will be there with that adjusted now we're going to get this ready to be printed so part of this you're going to be able to see the other portion you're not unfortunately because I forgot to re-share the print screen that comes up but when I go to print this the first thing I'm going to want to make sure that I do is that when I go to my more settings down in the bottom portion of the print screen here from Google I'm going to want to make sure that I change my document settings to A4 so typically water slide paper is an A4 document it's just the size and style of the document so I'm going to change that to A4 you also want to make sure if you're printing edge to edge you want to make sure that you are printing with the custom Edge custom margin settings that way it prints that edge to edge then you're going to go to printer settings which you saw me click just now and this is why you can't see this because I forgot to go back but what you're going to want to do is you're going to want to change the settings of your printer to be high quality for printing or you can use glossy photo printing settings so now that I've printed that I just want to show you the papers that we're using today so we're going to use hippo clear water slide paper which you guys have seen me use before and for white water slide we're using koala water slide decal paper so I have an inkjet printer so both of these water slide papers are for inkjet printers obviously you have a laser printer you're going to want to make sure that you're using laser printer water slide decal paper so here are both my images they are printed and ready to go here you'll notice the first one got cut off a little bit and that was because I didn't adjust the custom margins and that was my fault but I decided to just go with it for the sake of the video so here is what both of them look like the decals that are that light pink that again is white water slide and then the floral background there is my clear water slide paper so koala on the left hand side and hippo on the right side so now let's quickly talk about sealers so for sealing my water slides I gravitate towards Rust-Oleum clear gloss spray paint I use either semi-gloss clear or I use gloss clear that just seems to be best but you also can use this can which is Plasti Dip and you can use that to seal your water slides as well so my rule of thumb here is I always do at least three spray seals of my water slide and you're gonna watch me do this three times on my water slide here I'm gonna go with just the clear water slide when I I have used Plasti Dip in the past when I first started using water slide what I made sure to do was that was always my final coat of spray sealer it wasn't what I used for all three sprays but I did use that as my third and final coat on my water slide to make sure it was properly sealed so here's coat one now we're going in for coat two you're going to want to make sure though that you spray and then you also let this dry thoroughly in between but I'm going back and forth making sure to cover the entire sheet of paper and we're going to go in for spray seal number three here again making sure that I am letting this water slide clear or dry in between all coats that way I really can make sure I'm getting any not getting any pooling or anything happening to my water slide before I'm ready to use it so now that my water slide is looking pretty good how I know my water slide is cleared is that when I put it up to the light or put it up to my eyes I should be able to see a very very glossy look to my water slide if you don't have a true glossy look across the entire sheet of your water slide then you probably need to go back and seal it again so this is the cup that we're going to be using for our water slide applications here we're going to be putting both of these decals on this cup here I just have a layer of white glitter on here and then it has been epoxied a couple of times as well so we're going to do is we're going to put the floral background on the back half of this cup and on the front we're going to put that cute little decal that I created so I'm just trimming up my water slide for the back portion here that way I can make sure I have the perfect fit for what we're going to be utilizing this for and those other two pieces as well as the additional decals that I didn't use for today's video I can save for as long as I need so because they're already spray sealed they're really good to go and I can use them up to a couple months after the longest that I've let a water slide go before using it is probably anywhere from like two to three months in all honesty you probably could go longer but that's kind of the longest that I have ever utilized a water slide that I had already sealed in a project later on if that makes sense if you have a laser printer though those really do last a really good long time and you do not have to seal those and use spray sealers so now for what you need to apply your water slides so I always use warm water warm room temperature water closer to you know warmer than cooler and you're going to want some sort of squeegee tool that you can either grab from the Dollar Tree they sell these online lots of different places sell these you can get them on Amazon but this is really going to help you really squeeze out the water from under the water slide when you're applying the water slide to your cup here okay so I know you guys have seen me work with waterslide before but I am going to walk you through how to apply water slide since that is the point of today's video so the first thing you want to do is you want to take your image that you're going to be using and submerge it in your water so again this is warmer water that I'm using here and you should need anywhere from 30 to 60 seconds to really get this water slide to be thoroughly soaked enough so that the backing is starting to slide off from behind the water slide so this one gave me a little bit of a tough time this top corner here that I keep playing with here for whatever reason just would not remove itself from the backing could be a combination of it didn't dry all the way or that the bait the backing for whatever reason was not allowing the water to seep through the back end of it either way I did have to play with it a little bit and kind of pull it myself from The Edge to get it to remove from the backing which you're going to see me do here in a minute but all in all I was able to get that removed so if you hadn't had this properly sealed a couple of things might happen when you go to submerge your water slide you could run into cracking ripping and things of that nature if you don't have a properly sealed water slide if your water slide is properly sealed as I mentioned you're going to see that your water slide is very glossy to looking at it with the naked eye you also if you touch the water slide it's going to feel very smooth and glossy and if you have edges that feel a little bit rougher than the rest of the water slide you may not have properly sealed that one section okay so now that I've kind of just peeled that off there we're going to go ahead and apply this water slide to the back portion of the cup here so the difference between clear water slide and white water slide is that with clear water slide this means that this is a transparent image so I printed it on this paper it's clear and I'm going to be able to see anything that I need through that water slide with white water slide because it is a white based paper you're printing on a white piece of paper and so you're not going to be able to see through that image when you go to put that water slide on your cup so we're just going to adhere that one edge of water slide and then very carefully start to pull back the backing just kind of about a half inch at a time and then you'll see that I'm using my squeegee tool here as a way to make sure I don't have wrinkles and also make sure that I'm removing any of the water that could be trapped underneath the water slide you also want to make sure before you've gotten started with applying your water slide that you make sure your cup is wet and has a little bit of water on it it's going to give you a little bit more wiggle room to be able to work with and adjust your water slide while it's on the cup before you start to squeegee out all that extra water so with the top Edge there because I had a little bit of overlap I just very carefully push that over the top Edge and then I'm using my squeegee tool to make sure I'm pushing out any of those wrinkles we will cut this a little bit later but we're not going to cut it quite yet we want it to dry a little bit so I like to use coffee filters as a way to kind of prematurely dry my water slide a little bit it makes it a little bit easier when it's time to cut and trim my edges and kind of speeds up the process you certainly could just let this dry and not Pat it dry like I just did that is perfectly fine as well and actually the way that I had first started by just leaving it to dry by itself and kind of just revisiting it every you know 10 10 minutes or so to make sure that there wasn't any air bubbles that kind of had popped up so after I get that section of water slide on I'm just going to remove the tape so we can work on the flip side so this is still wet and if you're not someone who's familiar with working with waterslide and you're going to be putting multiple pieces of water slide on one image you probably will want to allow the back side to dry and maybe even apply a coat of epoxy before you go into your other decal if you're again if you're not familiar with using water slide or it's your first time using it so definitely just something to be mindful of you're going to see I go back and forth a lot just to keep making sure that my water slide is not wrinkling as I'm working on the other side and that none of those air bubbles are all of a sudden popping up which does seem to sometimes happen when you are working with waterslide you think that there's no air bubbles there and then you go back to that after it's dried and you see a water or an air bubble trapped underneath the water slide so go back with that make sure you're doing your best to kind of squeegee everything out and apply water to your squeegee when you're doing so so that you don't damage your water slide so I did a really quick transfer of the front again that's a white water slide so for that I had to make sure that I cut off all of the edges otherwise you'd have a white border but white water slide is really perfect for putting a water slide decal on dark colored cups because it has that white backing your transparent water slide or your clear water slide that's great for projects like this where it's a white glittered base or a light colored base well you're still going to be able to see the image but you're going to also see the transparent glitter or whatever you're going to be applying this on top of if that makes sense water slide is also meant to be applied to a glossy surface so you want to make sure that you're applying this over either a sprayed glossed spray paint or over an epoxied smooth surface and don't do any sanding before you apply your water slide because you want to make sure that you don't get any of those scuff marks or sanding marks that showcase underneath your water slide so I decided that we were going to also add a little bit of water slide to the bottom as well so I have this two inch hole punch that I grabbed from the craft store and I cut out a two inch circle there and so we're going to actually put that on the bottom here kind of like I did in my last tutorial with using the vinyl same thought process here if you will so we're going to apply that to the bottom as well so same deal here with the water side I'm just going to simmer that in water submerge that in water make sure it is ready to remove off the backing and very quickly just kind of pop that onto the bottom what I will say is that water slide is not always everyone's best friend it is kind of like any other craft that you're learning or any other item you're starting to begin to work with if you're not familiar with it it is something you're definitely going to want to practice with before you will find that you kind of get into your own Groove and kind of find a method in a way that really works great for you so this cup went back on the Turner for another coat of epoxy and this is the final look of the cup as well as the beautiful water slides that we applied to this tumbler I hope that everything that I pointed out in today's video was helpful to you if you have any questions that maybe I didn't cover in the video definitely be sure to leave those down in the just or down in the comment section in this video and I'll be sure to come back and answer all of those questions but I do hope that you enjoyed today's video if you did of course before you go give this video a huge Thumbs Up And subscribe to my channel and I'll see you guys again in the next one bye
