now the question is should i go out and feed my community cats dressed up as a viking would that attract more or less attention towards me hmm [Music] hello my historical fashion friends today i am going to be showing you how i did the woven hem on my viking apron dress or smoker and i am really excited about this it was my first time trying out a woven hem and i like the way it looked i used a contrasting color which i hope will actually help you kind of see what i did i also would love to try braiding an actual patterned braid directly into the fabric because it occurred to me that i could do that with the method that i was using so that may be something i try in the future as well if you like these kind of videos be sure to subscribe and i am looking forward to doing some sort of 250 subscribers celebration uh when we get there i don't know maybe like a live stream or something like that um it's coming up pretty fast so i'm really excited about that okay so let's get to the weaving i'm unpacking my little lunch i brought a pack up of dried mulberries and a baguette i love this basket that i got at the thrift store it is really big and i can put a lot of things in it you will need scissors tablet weaving cards a large eyed needle pins to attach your garment to your belt and your foot or something that you will attach the end to now i'm untangling the chain loop i used to keep my threads detangled but then i ended up actually tangling them during the process now i'm threading my tablets after all of them are threaded i tied a knot at the end this will help me to keep all of the threads organized and maintain tension i made a slip knot to attach the other end of the strings to my foot and maintain tension it takes some testing to get it right but after a while you get a feel for it i threaded the four tablets alternating in s z s z threading here's my diagram from a previous video on s and z threading all of the cards turn in the same direction i turn them all forward until the twist was built up then i turned them all backwards to reverse the twist i continued in this way throughout the entirety of the woven hem i use my needle to push down the weft after every time i passed the string through i started the weaving in a typical fashion going from side to side until i put the end of the fabric in after which i only passed the needle from right to left entering the fabric on the left and then going around the filler threads and entering the warp again on the right to secure the threads at the start i passed them through the loop of the previous weft pass this makes it harder for it to untangle should anything happen and now i am starting to add the fabric it was a little bit tricky at first i passed the needle through the fabric about half a centimeter from the edge this fabric tends to want to fray because the weave is very loose so i was really nervous about that during this process there was a a bit of work required to start the band attaching to the fabric and don't feel bad if it tasted a little bit it took me a little while to get it right and get it stuck in there i have uh some difficulty making the tablet stay upright and i wished i had brought my chopstick which i used for my other skip hole weave pattern because if it turns around it kind of messes up the v pattern that appears in the weaving and i had a really hard time making sure that they were always staying upright i should have added the filler threads from the start but i am going to add them in a few seconds i was very nervous starting this for the first time and i definitely feel like i would be more confident on my next woven hem which i'm going to do on the mock-up of the hood which i had previously made this is a diagram to show you how it will look if you were looking at it from the side and how the direction of the threads will go when i was trying to figure out the placement of the filler threads i wasn't certain uh even from looking at some diagrams and it ended up that i realized it should be all the way to the edge so that it makes an enclosure for the end of the hem and some parts of my dress have it fully enclosed but other parts there's some of the wool peeking through so if you're trying to figure it out i would say the filler threads being on the edge is the best way to go so you can see here that i hadn't quite figured out the placement of the filler threads yet and there's some of the wool hanging off just the edge of that woven band then i realized i was in great pain trying to sit up and the tree was not good to lean against so i packed my stuff up and i returned back to my apartment but first i ate my little lunch here's some close up on the filler threads which you can see better how that looks and how it should be closer to the edge and what happens when it is not close to the edge it was also hard to maintain the tension on the weft thread but i was really pleased with the sort of two rows of bees pattern that had developed with the woven band although every time the tablet twisted around and i didn't notice it kind of messed up my pattern and the woven hem is complete deceivingly simple as it actually took me about 12 hours but i'm really pleased with the way it looks and i just trimmed off and left an a long bit of the threads over so that i could kind of weave them back into the hem on either side and i just used my needle to put all the remaining threads back into the hem individually this took a little bit of time but luckily i was watching raised by wolves starring uh travis bimmel basically doing ragnar again but with a slightly different accent and now i am just trimming off all those loose ends and then my hem was complete i have to fix that little hole in the edge after i trimmed off some of the hem to make it even my stitches unraveled but here is the finished hem and i think it looks really cute i absolutely love the contrast of the colors and it's definitely a method i'm going to be using on more items especially on the edge of lacings thank you so much for watching i hope you enjoyed this video and i will see you next time you
