hey there do you find the screen on your camera is too small but field monitors are too expensive if so I've got a great solution I'll show you how I use my Android Samsung a53 5G phone as a field monitor with my Canon EOS R mirrorless camera it should also work with other Android phones and tablets here's what you'll need obviously a camera with an HDMI output an Android phone that's got a USBC socket and usb OTG support a short USB a to USB C adapter cable an HDMI video capture card with USB output a four foot coiled HDMI cable a Smartphone holder with a cold shoe connector and an Android USB camera app if you want to follow along with this project I'll put links to everything down in the description they are Amazon affiliate links but you don't pay any more if you use them make sure that the HDMI cable has got a large or Taipei socket on one end that's the standard size socket that you get on these cables for your TV on the other end the plug has to match the HDMI output on your camera as far as the HDMI cable is concerned I do recommend getting one that has got a coiled cable and not the ordinary type that you'd use with a TV set not only does it look neater in the setup but the greater flexibility that you get with the coiled cable it reduces The Strain on your camera's HDMI port and it doesn't get in the way as much as well whilst you're moving around with the camera so let's get into this and get it working first go to the Google Play store and find an app that can display a video input through the phone's USB port the one that works best for me is USB camera Pro it costs a little over four dollars but there is also a free version and I started with the free version just to check that everything did work and then I upgraded to the Pro app the next step is to attach the phone holder to the camera just slip it into the hot shoe of the camera and then turn the thumb wheel to tighten it onto the hot shoe I do like this one the ulanzi st06s it is a bit plasticky but the reason I like it is that you can adjust the angle of the phone holder so therefore you can adjust the angle that you've got your phone at to match where you're standing sitting behind the camera you can of course turn it the other way around and use it whilst filming yourself it also has a cold shoe here on the top so you can add a video light like this Loom cube panel Pro 2.0 or if you have a microphone you can pop that on there as well with the phone holder attached locate the HDMI port on your camera it's usually under one of these uh rubber flaps on the side of the camera once you've found it then plug the HDMI cable into the socket on your camera then the next thing is to plug the video capture card into the other end of the cable so that's the HMI cable and the video capture card plugged into the camera the output side of the video capture card connects to your phone with a USB to USBC adapter ideally use an adapter like this one that includes a short length of cable between the two ends so plug the adapter into the video capture card and then take your phone and plug the USBC end of the adapter into your phone all that's left to do is to mount it in the phone adapter on your camera now if you want to reduce the number of parts that you're going to use then you can actually get a video capture card that it that includes a USBC cable on the output side although this does keep everything neat and tidy and it does cost less than buying the video capture card and the adapter cable separately I have found that these video capture cards with the cables they're a little bit smaller and they seem to get warm whilst in use if you're worried about that resting on your lens or your camera then I would get the other type of video capture card now back to where we were I just connected the capture card to my phone if you've already installed the USB camera Pro app you'll probably see a message on your phone saying open USB camera Pro to handle USB video tap ok now turn on your camera so that it's sending a video signal to your phone you'll see one or maybe two messages on your phone including a window asking let USB camera pro access USB video just tap ok then tap devices on the Blue menu bar and tap USB video the video stream from your camera should now appear on your phone to get rid of the Blue menu tap anywhere on the screen and that also maximizes the video display you can now start shooting and using your phone as a field monitor now audio is just as important as video when it comes to video making if you also want to know how to use an Android phone to record with a USB microphone like a Blue Yeti I've got a video that shows you how to do that I'll put a link up on the screen until next time thanks for watching but can I ask a small favor please like share and subscribe if you found this video useful and make sure you don't miss any of my new videos hit that notification Bell I wish you well and look forward to seeing you again next time [Music] thank you
