China a lot of people ask me how I get these these lovely sort of warned effects on my ceramic so I thought I'd show you yeah it's like it's basically using my under glazes that I make here in layers and then sponging them back so I'm just going to show you how to do it time to decorate this muck so as you can see by the way I am in my other studio so this is my studio with all my with all my stuff for sale in here and all my slips for sale there because I thought we'll all stuff in here do you not I mean I can't be bothered to to carry it over to the teaching studio because I've got my big jars of under case we're talking bulk Paul that's a bit smelly that one being a Potter so with the three layers of under glaze I don't know if you can see on this one you might be able to see so it's basically three different layers of under glaze so it's it's a dark orange color and then a yellow and then a white on top okay so I've got my terracotta cup it's got white slip on the inside so that's been bisque fired so I'm just gonna whack on my dark orange color first and you want to kind of make sure that you get your headlight she looks really similar to the color of the clay all the lights a bit funny in here isn't it I don't complain about the sunshine though can i that would be that would be very silly so I'm just kind of really loading up my brush and I'm just using these really basic quite firm brushes because I just want the slip I just want to be able to get the sleep in all the little or little gaps you know all the little textured bit so I'm just working it on this not really much kind of finesse or Vardhan might add you remember to put my glasses on oh that's better everything's in focus I don't know what's wrong with me there's something there's something wrong with me because I always forget to put my glasses on it really hampers me like actually you know I guess it's getting to that age now where my glasses I just spend my whole time looking for them if they're not on this grotty old Biff string right no these this is my posh string my upper classes are just on this horrible dirty old bit of string and I really need to replace it because it's big gross actually anyway it's practical nobody sees me I didn't go out has anyone else become a bit of a recluse anyway right so I've given it my first coat which is the orange slip but sorry not slip Oh underglaze orange underglaze okay so because you can see it it's some it's dried really really quickly because the best you know it was it was not much fun to say what am I trying to say because it's quite porous okay because I didn't do a really really high bisque temperature for that okay so now we've got the yellow my big pot of yellow if you buy under glaze from me you won't be buying such a great big pot by the way don't worry I do sell them in much smaller pots 100 120 mil okay so I'm gonna work on the yellow just all over the top all right I know it looks a little bit green but it is it does come out ya know it's produced because it's going on top of the orange as well so I'm not going to being that careful because I know that I'm not actually gonna be wiping most of this off again so I'm just kind of whacking in a war you know I love this kind of way of decorating cuz you just don't have to be that careful sloppy that's what I am obviously anyway so we're just working that all again that'll do okay so you can oh that's my phone hello little message coming through so that's the yellow on can you see I'm gonna read bothered to do it that well and thatís absolutely fine it doesn't matter because you'll see in a minute what's gonna happen so now I always go like from dark to light with my colors okay so I've gone from the dark orange to the pale yellow and now I'm I generally end up putting the white on top and I really don't like I don't worry too much about how much white goes on again you know you'll get you know it's gonna be a broken kind of [Music] textured surface it doesn't you know you definitely don't need to make it all perfect and I don't want it like that anyway I want it to look I mean I guess the reason I do this is I switch one like a bit of an aged effect you know I want it to look like it's been around for a little bit longer than it really has because I visit around you so but I want it to look old what's wrong with me anyway there's the white layer okay so you can see I've just started really roughly on lights really bright in here isn't it sorry I'll have to hold it a bit further away okay so you see that it's just whacked on really really easy okay so we've got the three layers dark medium light so now I've just got um a damp sponge okay I'm gonna squeeze out my damp sponge and I'm just gonna start taking some of that off I mean it's dried ever so quickly what I like to do is I kind of go around and I take off the bits like this will accentuate the form as much as possible so I end up like for instance I've just taken it off around that base there and I you can see that that's a square and I did be quiet phone I should have switched it on to silent and I never mind and so now I'm just taking that off the bay a little bit okay you can see that so now I'm just gonna go around the edges and I just want to kind of articulate form as I say by taking you know by kind of getting that bit done first so I'm doing the corners okay so I'm just doing the corners first to kind of because for me I just think you know if you get if you get the main bits done first like around the edges of the handle as well I almost want it to look a bit like it's been worn away you know by lots of hands over the years you know like when you go into an old house and and you see like staircase and stuff where the woods got all shiny you know quite exciting you know there's a style near here where I want the dog and I love it because it's um it's got like a really worn away shiny bit on it and I often think oh that's like oh you know if buddy's hands rub that because they've gone past how am i doing I'm good right so now I'm gonna work my way around the top surface so can you see I'm just gently kind of rubbing it and I do try and use like a flat a flat ish and God this sponge is actually pretty worn out isn't it but it was flat and a flat sponge flattish sponge is quite good and what I'm also dings I'm making sure but I'm rinsing out my sponge after every wipe so that it's clean because otherwise what you get is you're just gonna smear all the colors together on the surface of the pot so you kind of want your sponge to remain nice and clean you know so you get a nice neat clean swipe every time I am getting down to the terracotta but just sort of I don't want to get down to the terracotta all over just being quite sort of careful and targeted actually and because I want to reveal all the three layers can you see what's happening already it's starting to look quite yummy isn't it yeah I just want to do around the top as well so I'm just gonna actually this punch really is quite worn out so I should have got a different one so I just want to sort of hurt you might do it this way take off a little bit around the top so it doesn't take long and you get such a nice effect okay so here we go just making sure that there's none of that slip that's kind of like there you can see it's kind of gone over up onto the white a little bit I mean I could just leave that but I think that y'all want to just take that back a little bit I'd rather see a little bit of dark terracotta better you know come nearly kind of think I'm probably done with that now so I'm just looking to make sure I like you know how that how that is and I do I like it okay so that's how you get this nice if I bring it for slips I can't put it in the Sun can you see it's like a really nice three tone colour and that will come out like that okay should do anyway well it's the same colors and if I fire it to the same temperature which I will do it will come out the same as that so it'll be nice because I'm not going to glaze I'm not gonna glaze the outside I won't look at the outside of the mug to be you know to be on glaze and to feel have that nice contrast between the nice clean clear glossy inside of the mug and that nice raw kind of undies outside of the mug which is going to feel nice and look fantastic as well so that's how I do it it's about layering up your under glazes and sponging them back basically so as I say you know I have got lots of under bases for sale here the colors are really high pigment I think they're better than than the market leader ones that they're for sale out there but you know I would say that but I have tested them and I actually do so you can always come by those here from me and the good thing about under glazes of course is that you can put them on to this pride play and do this sort of thing to like reveal your texture and that kind of thing because of course you can't really do that with slips which are applied on to leather hard play because if you started to sponge off all your slip then you just be kind of like smearing the clay into the slip you know the only reason I can do this with confidence is that it's been fired you know in fact I could wash the whole lot of I didn't like it and start again and that's the beauty of under glazes that you can apply it to biscuit fired pottery but you obviously can't do that with slip so even though I have lots of color slips for sale if you want to do this sort of effect you need to use under glazes and you need to be applying them to your bisque fired pottery but it's super easy isn't it I mean god that only took me well I mean it's taken me 12 minutes to explain but you know that's it it's it's really it's really not simple should I show you some other colors while I'm here because I can cuz I'm in my studio this is exciting let's see so I'm basically this one is the blue so that would be you know this one would be dark blue mid blue and white tone in exactly the same way okay exactly the same way and this one of course you can probably guess is just bare terracotta just with white under glaze on top and sponged back okay so it really is beautiful revealing see if I can notice in this all they go kneeling all the lovely texture killed it's so sunny you can't just goes white doesn't it anyway you see what I mean so yeah and all you've got to remember is to go from from dark to light I think I mean there are no rules you can go from light to dark if you want it'll just look different you know you you just have to kind of experiment with these things you know and if your texture it's like indented as well it will still work and even if you don't have any texture at all if your pot is smooth like this one for instance this one you know is it's a smooth pot it doesn't have any foliage or anything on it so you can get nice really nice worn out kind of you know like zippers being into somebody's pocket 400 years or something anyway you don't actually even need texture you can still get lovely things happening with smooth surfaces okay so that's the score with the room how to do that technique with with under glazes come and buy some if you fancy it I think that's it I feel like that was a release sometimes these some videos are really rushed and I've gone up to everything in really really quickly in 15 minutes but this feels quite leisurely I might even have a sip of tea this was made by a very very dear friend of mine who is now sadly passed away oh and I love it it's one of my favourite cups Cheers Nick anyway that's it for me um over and up bye for now
