imagine telling a French chef that he couldn't use any butter in his cooking I would expect that shift to not be very happy with you for making that suggestion well I don't know too much about French cooking but I do imagine that they are quite protective about adding butter to their cooking and I don't blame them now imagine if you take that idea and apply it to how you paint that is using lots of paint good generous amounts of paint good thick brushstrokes lots of texture showing the bristle marks on the paint you know it's that sort of generous approach to painting and it's a vital part of the painting that I try to put out there but for me what gets me excited about painting is the abstract nature of each brushstroke working with shapes creating different layers of paint building up a painting that really motivates me and I like to suggest details such as things in the painting that get your interest and above all I want to be able to go up close to the painting and say wow look at that paint look at that texture look at that thick juicy paint that's been used now it may not be for everyone but it certainly gets me motivated and I know that the old Impressionists tradition made that concept popular so if you like that sort of thing you're not alone I remember going to a art exhibition recently and seeing a painting on one of the artists displays and from some distance away the painting really grabbed me I think it was a path and trees and lighten the sort of landscape that really appealed to me so I saw this landscape and my wife was with me and she was I thought that looks really nice let's go have a look and as I said from a distance the whole illusion of this farm lane through the the grass and the trees and and that sort of thing looked really looking really nice I caught our eye but when we got close to the painting it was quite a disappointment whether it's fair or not that's not the point the point really comes down to his wire that I feel disappointed and I think because when I got up close to it there are a few meters away and the painting was very flat and they'd been a bit of a fan brush used to create a few highlights and the trees and things like that but both mostly it was painted in a blended and flat style so from a distance the illusion was very good but up close I felt laid down so I think that if you can create a painting where it's not only appealing and interesting from a distance but also when you close to it and you can see that brushwork that textured paint the layers of paint the confidence of the artist and I think also the passion that the artist felt for the subject that all comes into it there's a certain energy created by brushwork thick brushwork layering on paint confidently in the foreground building up the paint layers Senay and shadows and for the distant parts of the painting all of that balls a painting that has an appeal not only up close but further away so I created a video to illustrate this and I know it's difficult for artists to go from a blended approach and go straight into really thick and layered textured paint there is a definite in-between stage and the way to go about it is to build up those layers of your painting so do you block him get the big shapes in then maybe the next day come in with another layer of paint and especially in the bright sunlight areas you may want to come in with a third layer and put in some really nice thick impasto the sort of step by step approach is particularly helpful so this little demo kind of shows that approach where I've done the block you know now we're starting with the second layer and a few extra layers in the light areas as well and it will help you also to try this approach the step by step and layered approach instead of settling for one layer when you've got the drawing sort of correct go over it build up layers and apply the paint in strokes really strokes over the existing paint one stroke put it down lift the brush off another stroke elsewhere and that way you won't mixing two lower layers anyway have a look at the quick demo and then try out something like this for yourself as you can see this painting is underway and I'm putting in a second layer over the initial blocking and these are just a few of the brush marks that I'm doing in this painting but to illustrate a few things that painting wet over wet can be done and you're not going to create a muddy color if you apply your brush marks carefully you can make little fine marks like this as well without any problem just put the paint down and you can notice something that in the foliage and in the shadows I'm using very little white paint bringing a little bit of white in the shadows where I want them lighter these greens that I'm putting on mostly just yellow and blue very very little white paint the reason for that is white paint takes away the saturation and strength of the color it also seems to make the likelihood of creating mud a lot more possible a lot more apparent so use less white in the colorful parts of your painting the white in this painting mostly reserved for the very brightly lit Road and the sky and in the colors in the distant mountain you're bringing in some of those white colors to really stand out against the darks and cool color so a load of paint on the brush and smear it down and just spread it on wet over wet [Music] and by building up these little marks the paint gets more character the texture improves and so on so don't be afraid of using lots of paint this is an intermediate stage I do paintings we're putting a lot more layers or thicker paint as well but this is a good way to just remind yourself you can put in two or three layers off to the block in stage without any problem and it should benefit your painting so ever go and just go for it and enjoy it the final painting with distinct brush marks and paint well I hope this lesson gave you a few ideas to try out and that you found the tips in it useful if you enjoy the video please give it a like and share it and if you haven't yet please subscribe and you can get notifications when the next video is uploaded if you have any questions please feel free to leave them below I've also put a link to the blog article below as well if you want to read up more on the subject otherwise I will see you soon in the next video
