hi and welcome to weh videos my name is skip and today I want to talk about the garmin 530 and the o BS button what exactly do you do with that so we're going to learn about this with the baron 58 in the Garmin 530 and X plane now in this tutorial I'm assuming that you are familiar with the Garmin 530 and X plane and that you know how to enter a flight plan you know what fixes and waypoints are and how to use the direct to function so if you're a beginner I recommend you watch my videos on how nav radios and bores work together and my other videos on navigation such as using skyvector comm mist approaches and holding patterns and there's several others also but these videos have lots of information on navigation all right so what is o BS OBS stands for Omni bearing selector Omni means all so with this you can select all the bearings and or headings 360 degrees so after you've selected a waypoint or an airport a fix waypoint and a fix or the same thing in the Garmin you push the OBS button then you use the course knob on the HSI to select the course you want to fly to or from that particular Waypoint you can also use OBS to intercept a course that you want to fly say you want it to line up with a runway OBS in X plane works very much like the vore and the nav radios work with a voor you to the radio to a frequency that you want and then you just the OBS knob to Center the CDI needle to show you the course that you need to fly to get to that particular war so what we're going to do here is look at this approach now we're not going to do this official approach I just want to use this as an example of how you can use the OBS so let's assume that our last Waypoint in our flight plan is je f + y and we want to fly outbound from j EF + y on the 0 to 7 course and we want to intercept the - 9 8 course to San Carlos so let's take a look at that now we're going to jump in the airplane and we're going to do a outbound we're going to go to je FN Y and then we will go outbound on the 0 to 7 course using the OBS feature and then we will set up the OBS to intercept the - 9 8 course to the San Carlos Airport alright so here we are we're 13 miles is from Jeff knee and this is our last Waypoint and remember we wanted to fly a course from Jeff knee 0 to 7 and we're going to do that with the OBS now unfortunately the OBS in X plane at least for the Baron 58 does not work like the real OBS feature in the real Garmin what you would normally do in the real GPS is we would set our course to our first Waypoint and then we would use the heading bug so we would go to heading just do that here would is click on heading and we would set the heading bug on the course we are currently flying then we would select the OBS now notice the OBS shows magenta for two and then we have a white line going from the Waypoint which represents from let me clear up this stuff here so you can see the white line there what you do is you go to your course select knob and you turn this and notice that the lines just like a beacon from a lighthouse rotate along with us so the white is the from and the magenta is the two so we can continue flying to our Waypoint using the OBS we could switch now back to nav and now we're on NAB now we're navigating with the GPS on the OBS and we're flying directly to Jeff knee as I was saying in the real Garmin what you do is you leave it on heading and then you click OBS you can set up your course and you stay flying on the heading that you're at and then when you get to your Waypoint the GPS automatically switches over from heading to nav in the GPS function and it makes that course change for you X plane for some reason does not simulate this so we're going to have to manually switch that over from heading so what we're going to do is we're going to go back to our heading mode and now we're flying on this course directly to Jeff knee we're on OBS we're going to set our course for 0 to 7 shoes right over here roughly so we want to be flying this way and now we're just going to keep our heading taking us right - Jeff knee when we get there we are going to have to manually click on our nav button here on our autopilot panel so I'm going to pause this here and when we get there I'll show you how that works all right or two miles from Jeff knee one thing I want to point out see this arrow here this little pointer that is the two from indicator just like on your war and we are flying to our Waypoint once we make the turn and start flying from then this will switch notice it switched to from now we need to switch over from heading to GPS because it doesn't work properly in explant so I'm going to hit nav and now we're going to start turning and we are going to fly from Jeff knee on the zero to seven course alright so now I've reentered a new direct - and that's K SQL which is the San Carlos Airport and we're going to click on OBS and here you can see the two line let's just zoom out a bit here you see K SQL let's just go ahead so you can see that again there is the two from line I'm now flying on the heading mode to get to this intercept course of two nine four that's posit there so I want to set our OBS to two nine I'm sorry two nine eight or two nine seven I think is the actual approach course so let's see if we can do that too 9:8 that's roughly right there so we're going to fly now on the heading until we get pretty close to that let's just back out a bit there's 15 miles and we'll unpause and so now we're going to fly with the heading bug until we get to this line we'll have to watch our our flight as we get closer and closer to this line and then we will have to come down here and switch over to nav to fly that heading if I do that now if I just go to nav it is immediately going to turn the airplane and head us towards San Carlos it's going to give us I think a 30 degree angle to intercept that course I think and that wouldn't be the end of the world you're going to have to just use the OBS if you even want to use the OBS as a really nice way actually to to use any Waypoint or fix like you would you're more and here you see we've taken an angle on to this course so this would work we're taking a 30 degree angle here we'll pick up the 289 and that will take us right down to the San Carlos Airport so OBS is is a really nice feature when you want to cross a waypoint going to or from on a particular heading maybe the tower instructs you to cross a waypoint on hitting 2:07 you can put that in and have your GPS handle that for you it's also good say in IFR condition maybe it's foggy you can't see the runway you can set up a course to the runway like we did here so that's all I'm going to cover here with the OBS function on the Garmin a 530 so what we did was we learned how to fly direct to using the OBS and how to intercept a course that we program in obs now a little disclaimer here I have no experience at all with this in real life I just learned this rather quickly but I thought it was interesting and wanted to share this with you I sure there are other uses for the OBS that I'm not familiar with so jump in there play around with it and see what you can do so that's it I hope you got something out of this if you liked this please click the like button if you would like to leave a comment that'd be great or send me a message thank you again so much for watching and God bless
