foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] skill I'm not trying to learn different skills I'm just playing B major okay so if you clicked on this video and you still don't understand modes keep watching till the end it's gonna be very easy I promise are you gonna close this video and finally understand what it means to use modes on the guitar what's up welcome back to the channel if you're new here my name is Giuseppe Girardi I teach you all kinds of Concepts and techniques related to the modern Guitar World so if that's something that you're interested subscribe button is down here so make sure you click it and once you're there actually make sure you check out the links in the description lots of free resources the free Modern detail toolkit which is tabs resources and other cool stuff and I also have a free training on Modern guitar so definitely check it out in the description now with that out of the way let's actually talk about modes So today we're going to talk about the lydian modes obviously the the things that we're gonna say are going to apply to every other mode of every scale but we're going to start with Legion which is by far the coolest major mode anyway let's get into it so I was playing earlier in the clip at the beginning [Music] just an image seven Vamp I was playing e-lethians so what is elidium what is the lydian mode what is the key that you're in what's the difference between key and modes and all that stuff so let's start by answering all these questions now when you say lydian basically you're referring to a particular modality literally of the of the major scale so you're using the major scale in a different way but the important thing that you have to understand is that you're still using a major scale the seven modes are not seven different skills it's always the same skill just one major skill that you're using that skill has seven different ways you can use it seven modes quite literally like you know uh the mode of a game right like you have just seven different modes you can play the scale in and they just have different names ionian Dorian phrygian lydian and so on one for each note of the scale so the first mode is going to be Ionia and second mode is going to be Dorian and so on so okay lydian if you look at you know scale it's going to be the fourth mold of the skill this just means that we're using a major skill and we're using the fourth note as a root note this just refers to the context that we're in let's do a practical example it's very easy to understand in the clip at the beginning I was playing on E major so I was playing elidean which means that e is the fourth of a certain skill and that's it that's all you have to figure out if you know intervals and if you don't that's kind of a requirement to understand modes so go back to learning intervals but if you know intervals you know that e is basically the fourth of b e lydian is the fourth mode of B major all that means is that you're just using the B major scale and that's it like you're just using the B major skill then if you're using the leading mode you're playing the B major scale with e as a root note it's the same thing with the other modes so if you if we say in same key which is the scale we're using so B major the second mode is going to be on the C sharp right on the second note foreign [Music] and so on I'm always using the same skill I'm not trying to learn different skills I'm just playing B major for every mode of the B major scale really the only thing that you have to figure out is okay if I have a mode what is the major skill that I need to use that is the only question that you have to ask yourself so if you have let's make another example C lydian [Applause] the question you have to ask yourself is okay what is the major scale that I'm talking about that I need to use see lydian means that c is the fourth of a major scale and again going back to intervals C is the fourth of G I'm gonna be using the G Major scale right [Music] so if I play the G Major scale over c as a root note as a chord as a context whatever you're using the C lydian mode and and that's it like that's all you have to understand if you want to use modes now let's let's talk about the implication of this because obviously using the same scale but it sounds different right it's the whole point of modes they sound different each time because you're changing the context we're playing on a different chord we're not playing the G Major scale on G major we're playing the G Major scale on C major in the case of of uh C lydian right and so what is that gives modes their own sound it's always a certain note or couple notes that are always very specific to every mode so in the case of lydian the result of playing G Major scale over C major is that you have a sharp four on the C so you have c one major second major third sharp four because we're using the G Major scale so it has the F sharp in it [Music] and then fifth sixth and seventh are the same so you only know that is different from you know just uh just a major scale is the the shop four and there is the note [Applause] that makes the mode or scale sounds like that specific mode so it makes it sound different unique gives it a certain Vibe and so on so and every mode has a different note that does that so in the case of lydian it's the sharp four and and that is how you really emphasize the character of each mode so if I'm playing going back to that example at the beginning in E Major [Applause] um I'm thinking of using the B major scale right so I'm thinking that I'm playing on E major so e is my root note so I'm gonna play every phrase resolving to e or other notes of the chord foreign can be the root note it can be the fifth and I'm obviously emphasizing that sharp four as a passing tone [Music] and so when people say you have to start from a different note each time that's just not true I can search for many notes I want I can start from B [Music] if I resolve the scale a certain way it's gonna give you the idea that I'm playing on E major right so I can really start from and you know what I want [Music] [Applause] right so the starting point doesn't matter the ending point has a lot more importance so really you just need a couple of things if you want to play uh using modes effectively first of all obviously you need to understand intervals that like I said it's just uh prerequisites of uh understanding everything that I'm saying so if if what I'm saying doesn't make any sense to you you have to go back to intervals you have to go back to learning scales just a major scale but really well right so that you can understand what I'm saying otherwise this is just going to be nonsense to you or maybe you understand it on paper but you're not going to be able to apply it so if that's the case you know go back to some of the basics that maybe you skipped but that's the first thing the other thing that you need if you want to really be efficient you know if you want to sound good when you play using the major skill and it's mode you can understand the chords inside the major scale the that's only chords right so major minor minor major major minor diminished major that's going to give you basically the knowledge of where the diagram notes are going to be that obviously means that you need to know all the Triads of a certain chords because otherwise you're not going to be able to see those notes that's it now it is a lot right it's definitely a lot and it's things that you build gradually the things that I spend the most time with the students within the program we work on this stuff for a long time during the lessons just because it's the things that you don't really find playing really well in detail or it's just that it's very difficult to apply on the instrument so you need that constant accountability and that constant planning to really make sure you stay on track with these things and that's something that just like one-on-one mentoring approach can give you so if in any case you're interested in something like that the links are in the description if you're on your own it's going to be a lot more difficult with this video I just want to give you a road map obviously I can't follow you directly so I can't really point you in any specific Direction but you can still try to figure out and put a roadmap in place for yourself so these are the things that you're gonna have to work on there's plenty of resources on YouTube so just make sure you do that once you have all these things in place then you're still not dumb uh because yes you will have a higher understanding of where you are on the fretboard than when you are on this course but you're probably still not going to sound as you want because there's another component of using modes and using skills that you will be missing which is phrasing and in this regard I have a really good starting point for you with you know of something that you can Implement right away to improve your phrasing and that is a link that I just made using the lydian mode so [Music] you can actually just play it at this speed and it's going to sound pretty good but [Music] so you can hear that it's really emphasizing that E Major seven in the shop four uh or sharp 11 so it's going between some different pages within the datonic scale of B major so image seven here here you can think of just it's just a B major skill [Music] try it [Music] [Applause] a G-sharp Minor triad Sharp and we resolve to the G sharp there's a bunch of our pages that we're using together or pieces from our pages that really make the [Music] the next sound like it does and then a little bit of just you know extra emphasis on the onshop four so the tops for this are going to be in the description so make sure you download the free mods on guitar toolkit it's going to be included in there try it out let me know how it goes that's it for today so I'll see you in the next one ciao foreign
