this video is brought to you by sailrite visit sailrite.com for all your project supplies tools and instructions in this video we're gonna demonstrate and show you how to use a sewing awl this is a speedy stitcher that's available from sailrite you don't have a sewing machine on hand for a repair or sewing job consider using the speedy stitcher sewing all available from sailrite will demonstrate it sewing leather canvas and also webbing the speedy stitch you're sewing off from sailrite comes with a pre-installed bobbin of waxed thread we refilled the bobbin with more thread and are feeding the thread through the hole in the wooden handle continue threading along handle grooving through ferrule hole as shown the kit comes with a curved needle and a straight needle we're gonna use the straight needle will place the curved needle back in its storage area you'll notice there's a groove on the needle place the needle in threaded post making sure that the grooves in the needle and the thread post are aligned with each other pass the thread through the eye of the needle following the groove then run the thread through the Chuck ensure that the thread is running through the opening in the post and also the groove in the needle and now screw the Chuck on to the threaded post and tighten securely by hand there is a tension post on the wooden handle it looks like a tack loop the thread around it so the thread that comes from the small hole at the bottom passes over the thread leading to the needle then loop it over the tension post the bobbin at the bottom of the wooden handle is held in place by an end cap it simply presses on to the end of the wooden handle some leather crafters love to use the speedy stitcher here we are pre punching holes in a leather assembly leather is rather difficult to pass all needle through unless there is a pre-punched hole to begin your stitch pass the needle through the assembly then pull out enough thread to complete the job pull the needle out of the assembly leaving the thread in the assembly now we will even out the thread being sure that we have at least three extra inches on both the top side and the bottom side to complete our project now pass your needle through the second hole we've already pre-punched holes so we know right where it needs to go now pull the needle slightly back and it creates a loop of thread pass the underside thread through that loop and then hold it with your fingers and pull the needle the rest of the way out while holding the thread on the underside pull the thread on the top side and then even out the knot so it's between the assembly this forms a lock stitch the same as the sewing machine does now we'll pass our needle through the third hole repeating that process you'll do this along the entire length of your assembly in order to use this speedy stitcher you must be able to have access to both sides of your fabric application the insertion of the needle is very important to the straightness of the stitch you are creating if you're trying to create a straight line always trying to be accurate when inserting the needle in your fabric application or in this case a leather application after the stitch is created you can pull on the top thread and the bottom thread until the knot is buried in your assembly for better looking stitches try to keep the groove on the needle up so the loop is on the underside of the needle in other words keep the groove of the needle at a right angle to the stitches being graded this also makes it easier to insert the thread into the loop moving ahead we're gonna now show how to finish off your stitching so here is our last needle hole we will insert the all into that hole as we've done with all the other holes and pull it out partway until a loop is formed then we will grab that loop and pull extra thread out three to two inches is sufficient now we will cut the thread right behind the eye of the needle now the needle can be removed from that last hole this will leave us two strings of thread on the underside of our fabric assembly we will tie a knot and we will pull that knot close to that last hole this is an overhand knot we'll do that one more time after pulling very firmly to be sure the knot is up against your assembly we can now cut the excess off we will cut very close to the knot and then we will use a hot knife this is the sailrite edge hotknife to melt the ends of the thread this is a wax thread and once it's melted we'll press it with our finger to create a mushroom head this is an excellent way to finish off the end of your sewing all stitches if you don't have a hot knife you could use a lighter you just have to be careful not to hurt the fabric assembly or the leather it is done the exact same way with canvas here is a three layer fabric assembly a him in sunbrella marine grade fabric and we've inserted the needle in our second hole here we have not pre-punched holes in advance and we pull the needle out and our first stitch is created we will bury the knot in our fabric assembly and we will carefully judge where the next stitch should go stitch length is totally dependent upon preference insert the needle pull the needle part way out creates a loop pass your bottom thread through the loop hold the bottom thread pull the needle out tension your thread repeat that process until you reach the end skipping ahead here we are at the end we've inserted our needle in the last hole and we pulled the needle part way out until we could grab the loop and pull out the excess thread will cut the thread near the eye of the needle pull the needle out of the fabric assembly and tie an overhand knot twice here and after the double knot is created pull snugly on the ends of the thread to tighten it up firmly in the bottom side of that assembly next to the last hole now we will cut it with the sailrite edge hotknife and carefully melt the knot and press on it to create kind of like a mushroom head and there we are with our stitches in our sunbrella marine grade fabric when working with webbing it's often a good idea to staple or baste webbing in place before sewing so when the needle is inserted the bottom layers of webbing will not move around causing your stitch to look crooked a box X stitch on webbing is nothing more than a box with an X in the middle here we're gonna skip ahead to the final stitch which is done in the same manner as previously showing now our staples which held everything in place can be removed for the best service and support order the speediest at your sewing all from sailrite today you
