how to use a ball joint press on a Ford f-150 in one piece you definitely need hey what's up everyone Jeremiah here so I took my truck last week to get inspected and they told me it didn't pass they said I needed to lower ball joints well I decided to do the job myself and I'll tell you guys here why in a minute and it's the first time I've ever tried to replace ball joints and you have to use a tool well I ran into a few problems while using this tool so I just wanted to make a quick video of how to use the tool and the pieces to make sure you have before you do this job if you have ball joints like mine so when I took it to get inspected they told me that the parts were gonna be about 120 dollars so they get parts from Napa and that the labor was another 120 and then if I want to get it aligned it was another $90 so overall the total estimate was like three hundred and seven dollars three hundred forty seven to be exact so I decided to call Napa and get a quote on parts and see what it would cost to do it myself now like I said I am NOT a mechanic this is the first time I attempted to ever do ball joints and decided I watched a few videos youtube videos knew I needed the press to do it and called Napa and they told me the parts for both sides were wood they would give him to me for 60 bucks which was half the price of what the shop quoted me just for parts alone so I figured okay well hey I'll save 120 on labor another $60 in parts so I'll save 180 dollars by doing it myself then I was gonna go to Harbor Freight and buy the press because you need one of these presses here to press the old one out and press the new one back in and I was gonna go to Harbor Freight but I asked Knapp if they rented tools they said sure they had this one here it is made by ever craft and they said it's one hundred and twenty dollars to rent once you bring it back you can keep it for a week or two once you bring it back you'll get your full money back so I went ahead and changed the other side and ran into a few snags so I'm gonna go over with you how to use the tool and what you need to make it work well so when you get this tool from Napoli it comes with a bunch of different adapters the press itself and then these two adapters that go on the top and bottom so these are all the pieces you need to get the ball joint out however the problem I had when pressing it back in was on my style this is a 2005 Ford f-150 my ball joint sticks up past my control arm just a little bit to make room for one of these clips that hold it in which I retook off this clip goes around here on top so my ball joint has to stick up a little bit well with the pieces in this kit they don't give you the cup that you need to put on top of this so that this comes up through here some kids have it some kids don't now if you had the master ball joint adapter set then it would probably have this part but unfortunately I didn't have it and was pulling my hair out how to get this to go up through so I made something to make it work I was actually sent my wife to the Harbor Freight to get the pieces that I needed but then I was able to make something work and I'll show you that here when I put it back in to use this kit to press out your joints what you have to do is you want to take these adapters and I have everything torn all apart here ready to go got tie rod off the whole will assembly and all that now you want to get it down to this part take the clip off clean this round here real good to make sure that there's no cried to help that'll help you with pressing it out a little easier now you want to get one of your adapters to fit over the joint here itself and brighten this up a little bit for you guys so as you can see this one doesn't quite fit so I want to get the next bigger one and this one goes right up over there so I'm gonna press this ball down through here and it's going to come down through this and then it's gonna come down through the hole in the end of this tool and push it right down through that control arm so I'll get that set up here and show you guys how that works alright so you have two different attach adapters for the top and bottom of the tool and you want to use the one with the biggest hole one has a smaller hole one has a bigger hole and you want to use that one on the side that you're pressing the ball joint down through so you want to put the bigger Cup over top of the the ball joint put this adapter on and then you slide this pool up over the bottom and screw this nut down onto the top of the ball joint alright so now I got the tool on now you want to keep this toll straight as you can press it out and also especially when you're pressing it back in you want to make sure you get that ball joint pressed up in there straight I'm gonna try with my regular ratchet here and see if I could break it loose first all right sounds like something happened there all right it's starting to move now you can do this by hand you don't eat an air ratchet and this is why you want to keep this cleaned off nice and good around the top here so none of that crud gets in everywhere that that ring holds that on I'm gonna go ahead and switch to the air let's see if I can make it a little quicker it's go but it's going slow you guys can see that it pretty much just presses it right down through the control arm you're gonna want to watch at the end because it really comes out fast there it is it got it out so pushed it down through there and sorry about this guy trying to video and through this and there's the old ball joint as you can see it pushed it right down through the cup through the bottom of the toe and down through here without this toll I would say you almost probably couldn't do this job and then what you want to do is you want to make sure this is cleaned up in here really good maybe sand it with some real fine sandpaper at least that's what that did like I said I'm no mechanic so you want to get this clean as possible make sure it's all free of any grime or or grit and then you'll be ready to press the new one back up in alright guys so here's the old one and here's the new one from Napa and you can see the new one actually has grease fitting so these are pretty decent ball joints in my opinion now putting it back in you can see I got the hole all cleaned up ready to go you with the new one they give you Permatex retaining compound and you're going to want to put this on both the ball joint on this and also in this hole I'm not sure if this is only because this is an aluminum lower control arm or if you would use this with all ball joints not quite sure on that now the issue that I had was when you press this back in you're gonna want to take this is the one we use to get it out sick it goes over the whole thing you're gonna want to find the adapter that fits over top the rubber without hitting it but rests nicely on on the lip of this that way the tool can push against this and push this straight up through here and again you want to make sure you're staying straight so you want to find the one that fits on around here perfectly up against that ball joint and then you're gonna need the same adapter plates at the bolt stick storage so you put this on here like this like that and then you're gonna use this one on top and on my case that this little part that sticks down here fits perfectly in this hole and the top of the poles gonna fit in this small hole in here now that's gonna help you stay nice and square on this top end but it's only gonna allow it to press up through until it hits this once you get to that point you're gonna it should be going them pretty straight you could flip this over and get it to go up you know that other eighth inch or 3/16 there but then again the problem that I was having on the other side the first time I did this was once it gets to this point because this isn't rounder than this hole it's gonna stop now you need that to stick up a little bit there so you can get that retaining ring back on there so I didn't have that cup that goes on top of here and then this tool sits on there for it to go up inside of and that was my issue I was looking around for everything couldn't figure it out I sent my wife the Harbor Freight to get me the master ball-joint adapter set because I think it had that cup in there but then finally in my garage I found this old piece of pipe that I was able to cut a little sliver of about oh I don't know about three quarters of an inch or so out of because you can't make it too big because you have to have enough room between this toll for the top and the bottom so I cut this little sliver out of this piece of pipe that goes on there which is slightly bigger than the hole and then this would sit right on top of here like this and it would leave you enough room here for your new ball joint to go up inside of that and it allows you to get your clamp on so that's my first tip you want to make sure you have this little piece here it's the little cup that goes on top because like I said with this ever ever craft kit it did not come with that piece and it didn't really show a spot in the kit for where it would be so I don't think it was missing it just doesn't have that piece so maybe you could get another kit from Napa that has all the adapters not quite sure I didn't ask because they were closed when I went to do this so I'm gonna go ahead get this one started and show you how it goes back in now I did have a really hard time on the other side getting it up in I honestly didn't think I was going thought I was gonna break the tool I just put a big breaker bar on there and kept going so I'm hoping this side goes a little smoother all right guys I got the retaining compound on there I'm gonna go ahead stick it up in there get a little tap to hold it in there and you're gonna take your adapter that fits over top of the rubber butt up against the ball joint [Applause] then your other piece you want to put this piece on top and then you're ready for your tool know when I stitch try to stay nice and straight I'm gonna try to try to crank it in there by hand you're gonna want to take this all the way up until this seats on the bottom of this it is tight [Music] okay got pretty tight there so I'm gonna take this back off and then I'm gonna flip this top cap over it allow it to come up that other 3/16 or so see what we're at let's go down and this is the problem I had with the other side it's it's really hard to get it up to go up through all the way okay I'm gonna go ahead and see if I could get that other piece in there the piece of that cut see if there's enough room to get that in there yet [Music] thank you that should be good let's go ahead and try to drive it up in there Wow all right I put a little bit of grease on the tool make it go Louie's ear and I'm gonna have to get the breaker bar and use that let's get really tight it's got some movement there all of a sudden [Music] man scary right a break-in something and I don't think this should be this hard I thought it got a little easier than the other side all right I'm gonna try to impact a little bit see if it'll go with that maybe the hammer and will help it it doesn't look like it's moving sit back to the old breaker bar come on baby [Applause] [Music] that's getting a little tighter it's going slow but it's going and this is where I think I'm gonna break something you just want to get that - let's eat it all the way up against there it's almost there guys [Applause] okay I think that's it we ready to take it off check it out all right so now you can see that it's sticking up enough for that click to go on we're gonna seated all the way up against there alright guys so I'm gonna go ahead and put everything back together I just wanted to show you how to use this tool and in what pieces you basically need to do this on a 2005 Ford f150 hopefully this guy helps you guys out beforehand and one quick note when I did the other side this bolt only gets torqued to 20 pounds my frickin torque wrench didn't click and I snapped the end of the CV shaft off and had to go buy a new one which was 55 bucks at NAPA for a remanufactured one so just keep that in mind guys don't that nut right there doesn't need to be torqued very tight it's a 13 millimeter so hope you guys enjoyed watching and see you on the next one [Music] you
