hey friends it's holly from chic antique and welcome back to my channel in today's video we're going to be making over a french provincial dresser using chalk mineral paint this piece is super beat up super dirty and really old and spoiler alert it's probably one of the most beautiful pieces i've ever done so just sneak peek it turns out really pretty so if you're excited for this video make sure to give it a thumbs up and let's go ahead and get started alright friends here's the piece we're going to be working on today it is a dixie furniture french provincial dresser it is very beat up as you can see there's tons of damage at the top as you can see here lots of watermarks this is why you need to use coasters so if you aren't using coasters at home please start using those not only is it super damaged it's also really really dirty i don't know ellie and ava but very mad at them for scratching their names in this dresser not gonna lie as you can see this piece is super beat up so i'm going to teach you how to make it look brand new we're going to start as we always do by first removing the hardware [Music] after that we're going to give this piece a really good cleaning so i'm going to be using dixie belle's white lightning cleaner mixed with some warm water [Music] this is a tsp cleaner so it's going to get off all that dirt oil any marker anything like that [Music] and always make sure to wear gloves when you're using a tsp cleaner like this one now i'm just going in the corners with an old toothbrush [Music] um [Music] and you can see on this drawer here there was some marker on the left side you're going to see how awesome this white lightning cleaner is it totally removes it [Music] so [Music] always make sure to clean your drawers in addition to the outside of the piece and the inside where the drawers sit there were a couple of stickers on this piece so i'm just using a lemon essential oil to remove those [Music] and here's how that water looked after using white lightning super gross now i'm just using my vacuum to clean out the interior this piece was super gross not only on the outside but also on the inside i believe the owners never cleaned this so this is why you need to clean the outside and the inside remember you are selling a product so you want it to be clean you want it to look new you would never get a piece of furniture at a department store or anything and find it dirty it needs to be clean and professional [Music] after vacuuming most of the dust i'm just coming back with a wet rag getting the rest super gross [Music] so [Music] and here's how the rag looked and the water looked just from the inside after using white lightning cleaner you want to rinse it off using clean clear [Music] water [Music] and here's how that water looked after rinsing the piece and after that's all dry i'm going to be sanding using my random orbital sander [Music] and i'm going to start with 80 grit sandpaper this is sped up a ton but you can see how once i start sanding where i've sanded looks whiter that is because the paint has gotten dirty and oily and oxidized over the years so that's why once i start sanding the top layer it actually looks whiter underneath so that shows you the wear and tear that paint gets over the ears especially if it's not cleaned and maintained [Music] and i'm not removing the paint here i am just sanding down as much as i can especially in those areas where it is flaking or peeling off i'm doing a feathering technique to smooth it out as best as i can [Music] [Music] after 80 grit i'm going to be using 220 grit over the entire piece just to smooth everything out as much as possible [Music] and for these rounded edges here i'm going to be using the sandpaper just on my hand to get around those grooves and edges and as i go along i'm using my hand to feel if i have gotten it as smooth as i would like that's how i recommend doing sanding not just doing a couple passes you want to feel to see if it is indeed smooth enough for you to move on and to remove the dust i'm going to start with my vacuum and then i'm using a cloth [Music] and finally a tack cloth to get any remaining dust off this piece next i'm going to be priming this piece using dixie bell's boss problem solver it blocks odor stains and stops bleed through i do not want any bleed through or any weird smells on this piece this piece didn't smell but safety first so i'm going to be using this primer and i'll be applying this with my zebra chiseled wedge brush [Music] [Music] so [Music] since this piece was already painted there wasn't an issue about the wood bleeding through it was actually if there were any stains or oil left over on the paint so even if a piece is painted and you don't think you're going to get any wood tannins you could get bleed through from the old paint so i always recommend doing prep just to save yourself in the future because if you start painting and you notice bleed through then you're gonna have to go back and prime it anyway so i'd rather be safe than sorry and prime anytime i feel there could be a chance of bleed through [Music] now moving on to the drawers just showing you what that looks like [Music] hmm [Music] and you may be wondering why i didn't fill in these marks where the child or whoever scratched their name into it don't worry i'm going to talk about that [Music] later [Music] and i probably only needed one coat of boss but i wanted to do two just to be safe so the next day i came back to do my second coat i'm just using a tack cloth here to get any dust or anything off the piece before my second coat [Music] so [Music] and here's how that second coat looks like on the drawers [Music] so [Music] [Music] all right now on to wood filler i'm using dapp plastic wood filler in natural the reason i'm doing this after priming is sometimes it's too hard to see where there are dings and scratches on a old piece like this so sometimes i like to go back and fill those in after i've primed because they are more visible and easy to see that way so i'm just showing you what i was able to see after priming i didn't film the part where i filled these i'm just showing you where i am going to fill [Music] and after that wood filler dries i am using 220 grit sandpaper on a sanding block not only to smooth out that wood filler but also smooth out the primer so we can have a very smooth finish to paint on [Music] and to remove any dust i am using a rag to remove that [Music] and any leftover dust after that i am picking up with this tech cloth and for paint i'm using dixie belle's chalk mineral paint in the color tea rose this is my favorite pink it has a bit of a mauve undertone to it so it's a very grown up pink and i'm using a spray bottle my annie sloane chalk paint brush and a synthetic paint brush as well and i'm applying this using my annie sloan paint brush and keeping my paint brush damp as i go along with a spray bottle and now we're just gonna paint so sit back and enjoy [Music] [Music] [Music] if you are interested in trying this paint my tips for you would be to keep your paintbrush damp with a spray bottle and also not overwork this paint because this is a self-leveling paint so it does dry down and smooth out on its own so if you are working it and brushing it until it starts drying it's not going to be able to self level it is going to have more brush strokes and my last tip would be apply in thin layers as well to prevent brush strokes and for this next section i actually took out the drawers i do prefer painting these sections around the drawers with the drawers out just so that i can get underneath them and get every area so i'm just showing you what that looks [Music] like [Music] [Music] [Music] and now moving on to the side and showing you what that looks like if you're in the market for a chalk paint brush i definitely recommend this one by any sloane it's my favorite one it is really easy to paint with because it's super densely packed and it's very stiff so your paint isn't going to be flopping all over the place and you can definitely load it up i wouldn't recommend doing that because then you're gonna get brush strokes but it's really easy to move the paint around and paint very quickly with this brush [Music] so if you have any questions about this makeover or anything about chalk paint or refinishing furniture make sure to leave those comments in the comment section down below and i'd be happy to answer those for you [Music] after letting that first coat dry for a few hours i am coming back with my 220 grit sandpaper to smooth out any texture or brush strokes [Music] this is the key to a smooth finish you want to apply in thin coats and sand in between your coats [Music] now i'm just removing the dust with a rag and then i'll come back with the tack cloth as well and now just coming back for that second coat showing you what that looks like i don't know about you guys but this is my favorite part refinishing and painting furniture is a lot of work but filming it and then watching it back watching the painting especially that's my favorite part i could just watch this for hours [Music] and for the drawers here i'm actually coming back with my zebra chiseled wedge brush just to get in any of those corners and edges i can't reach with my annie sloane brush with drawers with raised lips like this you can sometimes have pooling in the corners so i do like to use a flat brush like this one [Music] so [Music] and now showing you the second coat on a smaller drawer just showing you what that looks like i like to paint the edges first and then do the middle and smooth that out just my personal preference for [Music] technique [Music] after letting the paint dry overnight i'm going to be sealing this piece using dixie bell's clear coat and a satin finish and here's what the texture looks like it's kind of thick so you want to apply it in thin layers with a synthetic brush if you can i'm using my zebra chiseled wedge brush applying this in long lines and smoothing it out as i go making sure not to come back to spots i've already applied it because that's going to leave brush strokes so i do one section at a time and then leave it and move on and my brush is also wet as well to make sure that the clear coat can glide really well [Music] so [Music] and here's how it looks on the drawer i am just repeating that process i am applying it first on the edges then the details and then the center and smoothing that out [Music] again i'm using this brush because it's synthetic so it's going to have less brushstrokes and because it's flat on top that is going to prevent pooling in any corners or crevices [Music] do now for hardware i got these handles off amazon and i wanted a more antique bronzy look to them so i'm actually applying dixie bells gilding wax in the color bronze and i am going to just dry brush that on to create that warm vintage feel the ones to the right of my hand haven't been gilded yet you can see they are gold with that black in the crevices but the gold has a bit of a green undertone which i didn't really like so that's why i'm using this bronze gilding wax to add a little bit more warmth and a little bit more depth [Music] this gilding wax is super super easy to use and it air cures so you don't need to seal it if you've never tried it i definitely recommend giving it a try it's super easy and it's really pretty and here's how it looks on the left with the gilding wax and the three on the right do not have gilding wax now that it's all complete i just want to remind you what we started with [Music] [Music] and here's how it looks now [Music] [Music] thank you guys so much for joining me on this makeover today i hope you enjoyed it this piece is actually going to a family member this dresser is going to be for my niece's nursery so this was actually a very special piece for me to do it's very close to my heart and i'm very happy with what i was able to accomplish considering how awful it looked at first so please let me know what you think in the comments section and make sure to check out some of my other videos before you leave give me a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel if you enjoyed this video i would love to have you and i thank you guys so much for watching and i'll see you guys next time bye what is that [Music] thank you [Music] wow the lighting is terrible looks it looks gray this is why natural light is king but when you do not have natural light you just gotta do what you gotta do promise it's pink i promise um hello hello do you like the dresser come back [Music]
