she behaved erratically I didn't really know her so she was barking a lot pulling on the leash just not well-behaved my biggest concern was taking her places with me I knew I could not so I knew I had to have professional assistance so today we're in East Lake and I'm gonna give you a little sneak peek of behind a client's first lesson okay so we've already met we've had the consultation and they've told me some of their behavior concerns which are kind of severe their dog reacts aggressively or he's just very she's very reactive when it comes to other animals she's also a Dora jumper that she has pretty much tried to tear up the screen in their door which is not a good thing and they have no control over her when they're walking because she's just so strong she's pulling them all over so the dog's name is Riley and my clients are Julianne and Michael and they were very kind to let us kind of get a sneak peek at their lesson today so come on in and let's get started Julianne tell us a little bit about Riley how long have you had her and where did you find her I've had her for a month exactly and I found her at I was a home of a lady that had her for two months she's being sponsored by Maggie's mission and the lady wanted to get rid of her and we were searching for a dog if you fail the tongues and then my husband saw her online and said that's the one so all we know is that two things one she's been bounced around a lot yes okay and two probably not any formal training I think that's pretty safe to assume that I think yes so she's gonna be nervous obviously in a new home anyway but training can help her settle down into your family a lot faster because you'll be communicating with her a lot clearer yeah okay so that's our goal is to actually teach you kind of how to speak dog absolutely and teach Riley what you mean when you say a command like you know stop barking or sit or heal or whatever so that's our goal yeah so when we met for our consultation we went over a bunch of questions and I came up with a customized lesson plan for you guys and so we're gonna take it as fast as Riley's comfortable okay as slow as we need to okay to make sure that she understands and then at the end of each lesson she's gonna be really tired and the best thing to do is to just let her rest for about an hour okay what we're gonna do is we're gonna use something called a remote caller okay you may have seen this before this is the newest one on the market they're very humane they're very effective and I find that they help a dog understand how to pay attention to us quicker so what we're gonna do is I'm going to custom-fit this to Riley okay and I'm going to start introducing the collar to her okay the idea is we find the lowest level that Riley feels us almost like tapping somebody on the shoulder okay to get her attention and then we tell her what we wanted to do and help her do that appraiser okay so the idea isn't a correction it's nothing harmful it actually is just like somebody coming up you in a crowded room and just tap me on the shoulder okay I feel really comfortable with that so the idea is for let's go she can be anywhere back here either side she just can't be ahead of you yes so as soon as she gets ahead of you you're gonna tap your button say let's go and go the other way so if she starts pulling me I'm gonna tap say let's go and go this way so that she'll follow me again tap your button say let's go now relax your arm there you go good now she's a little ahead so turn tap your button and say let's go keep walking there you go okay try it now keep walking keep walking there you go good so don't wait for she has to catch up with you keep walking there you go so we're gonna use the NIC button which is right here and go on eat so every time you step off when you first step off you're gonna say let's go you're gonna hit the button at the same time put your arm down tap and tell if you feel that pull so this is the first stage of her just paying attention and following and then we're going to teach her to walk right next to you and not pull and not to bark at other dogs or lunge cars when they're going by that's really dangerous so this is something that we can work on their starting points or foundation okay and you guys can just work on that now with your walks even in the house you can have her on a leash just have her drag a leash if you want that real light one you have is great okay and if you tap your button you always have to help her show her what you wanted to do so if that leash is dragging you want to tap and say let's go and then pick it up and help or do it okay so that you can show her right away what let's go mean okay I do it Riley is doing so much better a total difference from the first time I saw you the difference now is we can take Riley with us to visit on little excursions out into public whereas before we didn't dare do that you're afraid she would go after somebody another dog for sure we're meeting in a park for the very first time and I'm really excited because I haven't seen them for about a month and that was on our last lesson and we actually walked Julianna's neighborhood Riley was awesome she actually was very very relaxed and she wagged her tail the whole time and never reacted to anything that we saw along our way so I'm really excited to see how she does this morning and I think it's really important for Julianne to be sure that she's comfortable when she takes Riley into public because her response is going to affect how Riley acts also who's the issues with the front door they mainly rest upon the owner that's what I feel I feel that you train me to better train her so if I don't get in front of the front door and own it like you showed me then she will bark at a mailman just like a regular dog does but the difference is night and day the dogs next door are barking constantly so they start barking she starts barking she starts charging at the fence well she did anyway before you leave it people often ask if I can down the road phase out a training collar you can if you want there's some people that just feel more comfortable with the collar on and they put that in their pocket in case they need it to remind the dog but for the most part when they start responding really well you're pushing the button less so let's go see how Julia and Riley are gonna do today I think they just caught this and there's a bunch of dogs and some people walking around this should be a good warning first of all we did not use the tens unit on her because I did not charge my unit I thought you did phenomenal with that collar it's not only the leash handling and figuring out what to do when your dog reacts but it's also helping you get the mindset of relaxing so your dog can relax I give Julianne a whole lot of credit for this because she has really followed through with everything I've asked her to do she's been awesome and I really give her a lot of credit because there's only so much any trainer can do I would definitely recommend Cathy I felt very comfortable with her I liked how she went about addressing my needs because I have seen the tool she taught me to teach her really work you
