what's up YouTube welcome to another episode of the undergrad forum now in this video we're going to talk about how to study for any science course in college now I made the series on how to study in medical school how to study pharmacology in medical school Micro path physio biochem whatever I made all those individual videos on how to study for those specific courses in medical school and I got a lot of people telling me hey what about how to study biochem 6 bio ok what about all that stuff on how to study those classes in college and that that was a good point you guys made that totally could be a series but then I thought about it realized it really can't because you know the way you study in medical school is you have your class exams and you have the shelf for that subject and you have step one and that all happens in a very short period of time they all kind of build on each other in a different way which is why it was almost necessary to make those how-to videos for those courses but when I thought of okay how am I going to do it for how to study for o chem G chem physics it's all the same and there is no real strategy for each so I'm just going to use the example of O chem but it's going to be universal for but for any science course are going to take I don't care if it's you know lower division bio biochemistry embryo molecular bio organic chemistry general chemistry physical chemistry physics anything even math calculus whatever it's all going to be the same so if you're taking any kind of science course you can apply this strategy and this is why I'm making this video so let's get right down to here for some reason I still have my ochem book from undergrad I so should have sold this I could have made like a hundred bucks but kidding I kept it because some reason I thought I'm gonna use this in medical school what was I thinking but to be fair when I was in college just a couple years ago the internet wasn't as beautiful as it is now now anything you want you can find online with a beautiful description that can yield days five years ago when I was back in O chem if the internet was not as receptive and interactive as it is now so I think I was justified to keep it but in but now it's like really who's a little bit of anyways let's get down to it so this is the book I use when I was in college it was a organic chemistry 7th edition by Carrie and that's all it is ok so what do you do how do you study one you get your textbook for the course there's no way around it you have to do it I'm sorry the point costs like a hundred or two hundred dollars because what I call the student textbooks cost a ton of money and they don't cost a ton of money from medical school is that fair no is it genius business absolutely because look there's a lot more college students than there are medical students so I'm sorry just go buy your books we all have to but seriously you have to buy the book I knew some students who were like I'm just gonna borrow my friend yo buy the book keep your own copy don't share it share it but um but you but you need to have one copy with you like it needs to always be at your house because you don't want to be because you know what if suddenly you're like man I feel like doing ochem right I know so if you're looking at this and cringing like I hate this class but I'm going to break it down it's going to be easy but seriously you need to have the book always on your table because there are times I'll just like wake up and like I don't feel like doing anything and you're like you know what I can handle ok and you just do it so what do you do one by the book each lecture will have assigned reading so they'll have something along the lines of what you need to look for so I'm just going to bring it up here ok so what do you do ok to tell you hey kid read chapter four okay here's chapter four and what did I do when I was back into you on high school I used to highlighters and I just didn't like my Tuesday try lighting here and just wrote some stuff okay that's the first thing just read it for God's sakes get into knowing what it's all about and that's it right so just go ahead and read the book simple then except where you start making your money you are not money not like physical money but it's very start to make progress so you sit there you read the chapter the chapters have like built-in problems you do them like hmm that's interesting science medicine any if you don't understand you go back and figure it out whatever you progress you work through the chapter at your own rate and I will say this now and I'll say it again if another person asked me this question I want to freak out it doesn't matter how long it takes there is no amount of time that it should take I've had so many people ask me how long should it take me to read a chapter how long should I studying for something it doesn't matter study as long as necessary for you to understand and master the material if it's four hours it's four hours if it's fourteen hours it's fourteen hours if it's sixty hours it's sixty hours work at the rate you need to to achieve what you need to do for the mastery of the course if it's taking you way too long you might want to go stop by the what's it called like the Learning Center and those people literally will change your life they'll give you simple tips on how to increase your time management how to increase your study strategy you apply those simple tips and you become much more efficient and productive I've tried making like several videos on these topics check out my channel somewhere I'm not going to make a links I forget to do them every time but just check out the channel there are plenty of videos I made on how to increase your time efficiency how to have a really slow rock-solid schedule check it out so that shouldn't make it more efficient but regardless if your friends getting through a chapter in one hour and it's taking you for it's taking you for whatever I was very slow but it never affected me in a negative way because I went through it slowly I took my time and by the end of the chapter I knew what I was doing right so let's see so you work through the chapter and this arm is trying to get to the point where I need to show you in the book and this is where you make your money the problem sets in the back of the book you have them for general chemistry organic chemistry physics bio calculus everything has as every science book will have a chapter that you read with built-in practice problems for the most part and in the back of each chapter you have a full set of questions to do so here for example in organic chemistry with chapter 4 alcohols and alkyl halides that sounds exciting but irrespective so you would read the chapter and then here it says problems and you do here's it this is called 4.21 I don't know why it starts with question number 21 but I guess there was 20 practice problems built in and so we start with number 21 of problems and you do all of them and I have little check a little like checks like that as to all the ones that I did and you just do them all it's not that many look it's only like 20 to 59 it's nothing man's like less for any question it's easy right so what do you do you go through them and you do every single question you know be wondering whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa there cowboy Lex I remember back when I was taking like calculus or thinking like advanced stats in college it was like oh just do all the odd questions and that's like your homework or something or maybe there is no homework where the teacher recommends you do all the odd questions are you just gonna do all the odd questions no you're not gonna do all the other questions what is wrong with you you're gonna do every single one why because it's good practice how do you know you're doing them right you don't just sit there and do them and look in the back of the book where it has the final solution you go my better right or who might get it wrong now you go and you get your hand you go every time you're going to have like the student solution manual on how to do the problems and usually there's like a teacher solution manual on reserve at the library and you can just go like check that out you know out of the reserve and you can sit with it a couple hours and that's all and that that's honestly the strategy so pay attention if you have not been paying attention do it now you read the chapter you did the practice problems built in you did your best to understand the chapter now you hit the problems in the back of the book this is where you make your money you're doing the problems you sit there from problem number one to the end you do each one nice and so you do it on your own okay the number one and then you open up the book solutions the teachers one or the student one whatever you have at hand I would just like I would just do the problems at the library or you can actually they're okay with you photocopying the teacher one like the reserved one like if you just want to like go home and do them there doesn't matter where you do it just depends library's going to close or what your weekend looks like but II respect it you do one problem and you you know you did it and you're like okay you know look I remember stuff from the chapter you look at the solution manual you look at how they did it and is your answer the same if it is pat yourself on the back have a sip of water next problem and you can just you just do this all throughout the beauty of this is that it's easy like just doing problems is just like doing are preparing for an exam it's easy the more problems that you do the more effort you put into the problems the greater bang you'll have for your buck when it comes to exam time you can sit there and read every chapter until you memorized every word and I can guarantee you that will not be a productive method of doing well on your exams because when it comes down to it when push comes to shove when the pedal hits the metal where the nose is at the grindstone please don't make any sense it's all about doing problems if you can do the problems you can do the exam because what's on the exam problems it's not going to ask you to recite a certain section of the book never gonna happen I put my soul on that one seriously it's all about problems are you getting this and like saying at 20,000 times they forgetting bored of it maybe you're getting the point I'm getting tired of saying it what do you do you read the chapter just you know what's going on you couldn't even answer the problems and you keep doing problems in favorably there'll be problems that you're like I don't know how to do with this what do I do that I not wait the chapter should I read it again no you don't read it again what's wrong with you you open up the solution manual youth you know you sit there and you read how they did it and you say oh that's a good strategy and then you look back in the chapter regarding to that single question and you figure out how they did it where you were wrong in your thinking and learn from it and carry on in very like usually like the problem center design does like questions one through three all kind of similar words numbers change they know then like four through six they're all similar with some things change so usually if you get one wrong they'll be like one or two more they keep practicing it so it's all about understanding and by doing problems the reason to do problems is not to test your understanding of the chapter but it's to test your understanding and to learn from the problems that's something that a lot of people miss for some reason learning from the problems is a huge part of learning for any science course doing problems itself is like a style of doing what's called reverse engineering where you're hitting all the high points for the chapter you could be mad you for you you may be read in the chapter in thinking some points which the textbook and authorities saying organic chemistry regard is my new show to you is like a big deal but for some reason you you know you got that wrong you're thinking my new show is a high-yield topic which in reality it obviously isn't so by doing the problems every single problem is going to be focusing on a high yield point an important thing that you need to get out of that chapter and if you can do the problems and if you can learn from all the things you don't know for the problems then you understand the chapter leaving it alone will not do that for you you need to read the chapter you to do all the problems you need to learn all the problems you do not understand and then you now know the chapter now if you want to be super aggressive about this and really do well on your exams you do the questions more than one time and I don't mean okay you do questions you know one through fifty see those fifty questions in Chapter in the morning and it takes you like you know half the day and then you'll do them again at night no you remember how you did them come on come on not an idea what do I do so say it's like Monday and then you just did like chapter four and you did like all 50 questions you're like oh what a tough day where he did 25 and then I'm - you say you did the other 25 like ooh what a tough few days right then you carry on with the next chapter because class keeps always moving on and so forth and so forth but when come exam time a week before you start planning out your week and every day you're gonna do in you know back in Chapter four back to chapter five to do the questions again sometimes I would even do the questions three times you know keep going through the whole set never chapter four on Monday and again on Tuesday now if you have an exam from chapters four five six and seven you keep doing those questions in that order it'll take you a tremendous amount of time but the beauty is you never have to sit down or read all the chapter again you only have to go back and look at the things you're getting wrong and when you're sitting there you're doing problems looking at the solution manual you're learning how they're doing it it's becoming part of your repertoire then you are learning everything you need to know do not by any means feel guilty to think oh I'm getting question wrong I don't know it no the questions are designed to stop you and they're designed for you to learn from them that's what you need to realize the problems are not there to test the problems are there to test and for you to learn from and the cloak the sooner you realize that the sooner you will start to slam your college courses and whether it be O chem G chem physics anything it's all the same alright guys I hope you enjoyed this video it was a bit long but we had a lot to cover and it's important hopefully if you can apply these strategies have the willpower to do the questions the last thing we want to tell you it was a big thing to me when I was taking exams the freshmen in like general chemistry I was not fast enough that was bad and my teacher said hey kiddo listen up she this is actually her advice she's one who taught me just you know do sit there and go all the questions and learn from them and she said get yourself like a timer I use this digital whine I used to have like a spring one for cooking but I used it so much it broke so I just ended up gaming is like cooking timers he was like type in two minutes and I would set up like soaps the first round through you know I'll be sitting there I'll be doing questions one by one looking at the solution manual learning for my mistakes going back to the chapter of such and so forth but once I had done all that say four chapters four five six and seven for the exam and that was coming back to chapter four to do all the questions again I would set a timer I would set it for ten minutes for ten questions or 15 minutes for ten questions you need to figure out you know you got to start somewhere and kind of get yourself going at a speed of about I think a minute a question was what I was told back then I don't exactly remember but you need to like learn how to go fast you can't take your time too much because that could leave you in a situation we don't get up the whole test done the allotted time so I got this after I had gone through the exam slowly once and I was going through my second run through the questions I would time myself so now I had the stress of time in addition to the stress of the question ie you have you are perfectly emulating an examination and when come time for the exam you're going to do great so there you go guys I hope you enjoyed these tips let me know when you implement them how they go I definitely hope they help you I'm there's I'm sure they will help you there's nothing that I said that's weird you know unusual strategy some things you know out of the blue it's all common understanding things that people never tell us in college you know these are things that should just be obvious but they're not and I wasn't obvious to me and I had to learn the hard way and one of my teachers one day sat me down and told me and I'm extremely thankful for that so now I'm sharing it with you guys and I hope you guys can implement them and really succeed in your studies and and progress alright guys leave any questions you have in the comments below send me a message send me a video response do whatever you like I'll find you your contact share the video with your friends this is important you know if you have friends who are starting out in college or friends that are in school and having a hard time in the science courses send the video maybe it'll help out you know maybe we'll watch it midnight one day and go I'll try that be out there be helpful be altruistic guys it's what we're doing help out your friends alright guys as always enjoy your studies
