hi everybody and welcome back to my channel my name is amelia and here on this channel we talk about writing journaling and productivity to help you curate a life that you love so for today's video i wanted to talk about visual journaling for a lot of people journaling tends to be an action that you can only do with a notebook and a pen it's something that has to be written down and then maybe re-read later for self-reflection but there are many people out there whom this process doesn't exactly work for in my video about the five personality tests that i think you should take i talked about the different learning styles so among these learning styles there are reading and writing logical visual kinesthetic and honestly there were many many more but what was really interesting is that by doing that video i ended up thinking about how learning styles might affect your ability to maintain journaling as a hobby as a mental health routine and i realized that a lot of people struggle with journaling not just because it's hard to form a habit which it is but also because journaling is a reading and writing exercise versus a visual or kinesthetic exercise so i wanted to start making a series a very miniature series about different types of journaling for your different learning styles so first before anything i encourage you to learn your learning style and then come back to this video if visual learning is your thing and even if you're just interested in visual learning heck stay around so today we're going to be talking about how you can visually journal in order to not only speak to your own personal learning style but also to add a bit of diversity in your journaling routines before we get into it please be sure to give this video a thumbs up if you like it it helps my channel it makes me super happy so i would appreciate it if you did that um and then also don't forget to subscribe to see more content like this and other videos in this series if visual journaling and regular journaling isn't exactly your thing so here we go all right so the first thing i wanted to cover is the benefits of visual journaling for pretty much everybody i myself have done some visual journaling exercises in the past and i'm going to give you the reasons i find it beneficial the first reason is simply that it's great for visual learners and while i myself am not a visual learner necessarily i do think that it's a great way to process information and retain your thoughts i guess when it comes to expressing yourself through journaling going off of that humans are naturally very visually orient oriented i read this book called sapiens by yuval harari and i will put a picture of it up on the screen and link it down below as well probably one of my favorite books if not my favorite book of all time and what i really liked is that there is this idea that humans are naturally kinesthetic auditory and visual learners we use these senses in order to survey the world and to process information because visual cues are so important in our culture and in our lives because of the kind of creatures that we are it makes sense that visual journaling would be more beneficial to most people over traditional journaling which doesn't really have a lot of visual cues associated with it another reason that i really love visual journaling is just that it's a it's a great way to diversify your journaling routine so using visual journaling whether that is through art or whether that is through video or photography it's a great way to kind of diversify your hobby and to really grow as a person it helps you to express yourself in a unique and different way and it challenges you to focus more on the visual aesthetic of your thoughts and your journal aspects rather than just falling back on the written word and rambling if that makes sense alright so now i want to get into the different types of visual journaling so there are a few that i came up with i might be missing some so if i am please be sure to let me know down in the comments below if i if there's like a type of visual journaling that you can think of that i didn't mention in this youtube video additionally um i'm once i'm finished telling you about these things i want to know your favorite i want to know what you prefer if you or what you would do if you're going to start a visual journal so without further ado let's just go ahead and get into these types of visual journaling stuff so one of the first types of visual journaling that i've done before and i absolutely adore are video diaries and i'm going to put them down as video diaries but really it's just using video at all for journaling purposes perhaps my favorite is the one second a day or as i like to call it one moment a day journal series or journal diary essentially with this one day video journal you basically catalog like a second to for me it was a second to five seconds of your life every single day and then you go back and reflect on it a lot of people do this for weddings for pregnancies for graduations or like road trips they do it for all kinds of things back in 2017 i believe i started my video diary from one woman a day starting on march 9th until march 9 2018 throughout that period of my life i documented every moment of my day and i'll put a few clips of it up here actually pretty much all these videos are just my moment of the day i have the video on youtube unfortunately you can't view it it is private to me but these are pieces of what that video diary shared and for me because i chose to do more than a second it is about 14 minutes long but i really love going back to see that portion of my life there's a sense of nostalgia just to go back and watch these happy memories but it's also a really artistic piece to look at i highly encourage you guys to do a moment of the day or a second of the day type of video series one of the easiest ways to do it is through an app called one second of one second a day i believe so i highly highly recommend that you do a one second a day thing it's just really great and it helped me handle my depression at the time so it was a really nice journaling method that didn't require a lot of my time and didn't really force me to write down all these depressing thoughts rather i could focus on happy memories and that was just that was awesome another way that you could do video diaries is honestly the old school method where you record yourself talking and doing a video diary i don't know if you guys have ever seen that one movie what's it called the martian is that what it's called i'll put the image up here i believe it's the martian i don't know if you guys have seen that but in that movie he does a video diary sequence and kind of just sends these messages i think back to earth i don't remember the movie at all it happened so long ago but the traditional vis the traditional video diaries idea is honestly a really great way to let out your thoughts to explain yourself without just having to journal with a pen and paper rather you can focus on talking to a camera or talking to your future self whoever and you make these little video diaries and i think it's a really great way to document your life and to document your progress okay so the next type of visual journaling that you can do that is not video is photography and in my photography class back in my junior year of high school my teacher had us take a photo a day to document our spring break vacation and i think the photography is a really great way to do a visual journal you can take photos of moments in your life and then you can put them in like a photo book um this is a really old school method as well that people used to do but i think it's a really great way to visually journal you could take a picture of something that was important that happened that day something with your friends or family and then put it in like a scrapbook that you get to decorate yourself and when you go back and look through it you have all these beautiful memories to to think about i think it's also nice because of the scrapbook scenario that you can also write notes to yourself you can fill it with poetry fill it with quotes you can do whatever you want and i think scrapbooking specifically using photos and scrapbooking are both amazing to go off of that another method of visual journaling is using a mood board or a vision board to create a visual representation of what you want to manifest what you want to affirm to yourself and just what you are either aiming for or commemorating i recently made a vision board for 2021 which is something that i haven't done in years and it was honestly so great i did mine digitally through canva but you can do yours however you want and honestly physical representations are probably a little bit better because you tend to remember the things you do physically more than you do on like on digital if that makes any sense so those are also other representations of visual journaling and i think that one of the things i really want to start implementing into my own journal is more of these vision boards more of these like collages that have some sort of representation or symbolism to my personal life at the moment and i think that it's one of those really artistic things that you can do that just makes all the difference going alongside that mood and vision board aesthetic type thing i think that doing art in your journal is super important there's a lot of people out there who think clearer by doodling or who enjoy creating artistic pieces personally i do better with just writing my words all sporadically and one of the best methods for me when it comes to journaling is to journal not on the lines i love journaling the opposite direction or just in a curve or just something different and because it's visually appealing to me but it also causes me to slow down and really think about what i'm writing versus doing art but i know a lot of people love putting artistic designs and character sketches and doodles in their journals and i think that is really important if you are an artistic type i think bullet journaling is ideal for you i do plan on coming out the video about my thoughts on on bullet journaling soon but i think that that aside art in your regular journal not just words can also make a very big difference to how you journal and how you let go of your thoughts okay so this next visual journaling type tidbit thing has to do with visual exercises and i've done a few in my journal that i've shown on this youtube channel uh some of them are like the current me versus future me journal exercise and the level 10 life challenge exercise and i think both are really helpful when it comes to analyzing yourself as a person and really growing as a person visual exercises also diversify the way your journal looks when you flip through it and there are really great exercises to help you journal and create these new thought patterns and to assess and self-reflect while limiting the amount of writing that you actually have to do and i think a lot of people can use these visual journal exercises to better themselves without feeling the pressure of answering prompt after prompt after prompt which can get kind of tedious if you're not big on writing now it's also important to say that there are several other visual exercises out there that i did not mention here uh because i've only done two on my channel so far but i do intend on doing more and then showing you guys how to do it yourself to put it in your own journal but that aside there are also several diagrams and way that you and ways that you can transform your mood trackers and habit trackers and pretty much anything into a visual representation that feels more appealing to you and might appeal to your visual learning style if that is what you are all right so that is all that i have for today's video i know it was pretty quick but yeah i definitely encourage you guys to try out some of these things if you've never done it before to maybe change up the way that you journal and to enhance your current journaling process not only that but i do want to let you guys know that i'm going to be making more videos like this so please be sure to give this video a thumbs up and let me know what your thoughts are on visual journaling and if you want to see other types of journaling and let me know what types of learning styles you want to see that way i have kind of an idea of where to reach out so yeah anyway thank you guys for watching today's video i hope that you enjoyed and i will catch you next time [Music] um
