hello my name is claudia welcome to my channel i make lifestyle vlog and journaling content here on youtube and today i will be sharing with you everything you need to know on setting up a bullet journal so i've been bullet journaling for over four years now and i think it's safe to say i know a thing or two when it comes to finding what works for you in this system here are time stamps for the video so please feel free to click around to find what you need to watch and there will also be timestamps on the play bar so you can click around there as well alright let's get started shall we first an introduction what is a bullet drill so the bullet journal is a personal organization method made by writer carol as he says this notebook method is meant to help you track your past order your present and design your future basically the bullet journal system efficiently helps you to plan organize brain dump schedule prioritize track all the things you need to do all in one notebook it's a flexible way to create a planner that best suits your needs now how do you literally start a bullet journal step one figure out what you want out of the system if you are new to bullet journaling it can be such a daunting and overwhelming task to start your first bullet journal because for the first time you have full creative and technical control what you see on pinterest youtube and instagram can overwhelm you because everyone has their own setup but you need to keep in mind that bullet journaling is a practice not a means to perfection so get clear on what you want out of the system are you using the bullet journal to efficiently organize to plan is this about productivity or is this another creative outlet i strongly encourage you to start from the basics and play to your strengths when i first started bullet journaling i tried everything and i mean everything i did the artsy spreads that you see on pinterest and instagram and youtube that looks really cute and everything but then it just didn't pan out because one it wasn't for me because i'm not artistically inclined and two it just didn't serve the purpose that i needed out of the bullet journal and i also did a ton of spreads that i thought would be useful but i didn't end up finishing like you know habit trackers and gratitude logs and what have you ultimately the more you bullet journal the more you'll find what works for you and what works for me is just doing this simple simple like minimal layouts because i have made my bullet journal strictly about organization productivity and mindfulness i have a separate journal when i want to do artsy stuff step two obtain the supplies that you need i've done bullet journaling in a dotted notebook and a gridded notebook and i've also bullet journals in my six ring binder i personally prefer a dotted and numbered notebook because i don't have to number my pages myself and because the dotted look is easier on the eyes i'm currently using this notebook right here it's from the brand loystrum1917 it's really nice this is in the color port red what pen should you use any pen really i mean when i first started out i just used whatever pen i could find and a pack of fine liners now i currently use the mooji gel ballpoint pens in 0.38 millimeters and 0.7 millimeters the zebra mildliner markers as well as stamps step 3 set up your bullet journal first things first break the spine of your notebook i promise you it's going to help your notebook lay flatter and it's not going to damage the spine basically you just take your notebook open it lay it flat and then you will take 10 pages from each end of the notebook and just flatten them out until you reach the middle and then yeah that's how you break the spine of your notebook now on to really setting it up so open your notebook and you'll get to the first page just write your name that's easy and then next is the key so this is my key it's pretty cute um these are all the icons i use for bullet journaling it's almost the same as writer carol's key as you can see right here i have a dot for a task x step for completed right arrow for migration we'll get more onto that this whole key actually came from my previous bullet journal that i did in a six ring binder so i just cut it out and pasted it in this one because i thought it looked cute and i wanted to keep it and it sort of like the color sort of works with like my cover so there you have it beginner tip create your key on the left side of your bullet journal that way when you have to refer to it you can just like open it and it's right there instead of having if it's like on the right side you'd have to always flip back to it and that's just hard to use it's not as efficient so just keep it on your left side next the index the index is basically the table of contents for your notebook the idea of the bullet journal is to dump everything in your head onto page and never lose it the index should be located at the front of your notebook if you have the leuchtturm 1917 notebook then they'll already provide you a template to use so basically with the index you just write down the topic of your note of your collection or log and then you jot down the page number and that's as simple as that the future log what is a future log a future log is a place for you to jot down ideas events appointments tasks basically anything else that will occur outside of the current month this ultimately gives you a bird's eye view of what's to come the future law can come in various formats you can do like a whole year a bi-annual future log i personally do three-month future logs because over the years of all this bullet journaling i've realized that i go through bullet journals every three months beginner tip when a new month begins make sure to check your future log to see if there are any events appointments tasks that you can migrate to your monthly log and now on to the monthly log this is how mine looks like i do a linear calendar because it best provides me a bird's-eye view of how my month is going to look and i also just don't do grid calendars because i'm too lazy to draw and count the squares out beginner tip especially if you are doing a linear calendar to avoid making it look cluttered only write down things that are set in stone or after they've happened and as you can see i've personalized it a bit more i included a monthly goals list a tarot card of the month and an end of month review section if you'd like to see my whole monthly bullet journal setup please click on the video here or here and you can check it out i don't know you'll find out on to the daily log i don't do weekly logs because i find that it clutters my page way too much which therefore would clutter my mind when the whole sole purpose of a bullet journal is to supposed to alleviate that issue i also don't need to see my life organized in a weekly layout this is how i personally create my daily log i take a zebra mildliner as well as a muji 0.7 pen and i create my header so for the header it just includes the day of the week as well as the date next i write down three things i am grateful for these three things must have occurred within 24 hours just to keep things fresh and i write this in sentence form because i think it's really important to express what you're grateful for rather than just jot down a list of things that you're thankful for and after that it's the to-do list so using the key that i mentioned earlier i do a little circle or a dot for a task and then i x things out if they're done i do a right arrow for migration and as you can see there are some tasks that have been indented and that's basically a thing called nesting so it's just me breaking down a bigger task into smaller tasks so that i feel like i've achieved more i guess let's talk about migration if you find yourself migrating a task for like three consecutive days that tells you that perhaps that task isn't actually as important as you think it is and that maybe that task should belong onto the monthly log or the future log this tedious process of migration is intentional it's meant to encourage you to pause and consider what's actually important on your to-do list and what's not shown here at the end of the day i will write out something that i call winds of the day so i will mention three things that have gone my way during the day and now we are on to custom collections a collection is a catch-all of everything that doesn't fit into the previously mentioned categories the beauty of bullet journaling is that you get to design your notebook to become whatever you need it to be here are my personal custom collections let me just open this up uh let's see so i have a 23x23 bucket list basically what that is is every year on my birthday i create a bucket list of activities that i'd like to complete so this year i set out to complete 23 things before i turn 23 next august and at the start of every month when i'm setting up my monthly log i'll look at what items on this bucket list that i could migrate into my monthly goals my next collection is called what to check out it's essentially a place for me to jot down any recommendations of books movies anime tv shows scripts and plays that i'd love to check out the next collection is called password log i think that's pretty self-explanatory it's just a place for me to jot down all the sites apps usernames and passwords last but not least threading threading is used when you want to continue writing about a certain topic but you need to skip a few pages ahead so really at the bottom of the page that you're writing on write the page number of where you'll begin at and that's it alrighty that is the end of this video i think i've covered everything i hope i have if i haven't please let me know if you have any questions down below in the comment section i'd love to hear i hope this video has been helpful for you and i hope you'll find a system of bullet journaling that works for you and yeah happy bullet journaling and i will see you in the next one bye you
