[Music] thank you [Music] [Music] thank you that intro was a one take off the top of my head some of the mistakes are definitely free of charge so we can take the scales that we know and love and have a lot of fun jamming over this groove take a closer look come on right up in this video we're not going to look at modes and intervals I just want to give you some tools so you can have fun improvising over this awesome Groove so in the intro I used the major pentatonic D minor pentatonic and G major pentatonic they all have a different flavor and a different sound for sure so there's an ongoing debate about what key this song really is in Paul Davids has a great video on this topic I encourage you to check it out I'll leave a link in the description also there's many interviews with Ed King the co-writer of Sweet Home Alabama and the man who played the solo so Ed King looked at these three chords the D chord the C chord and G chord as the key of G and you can hear the G major sound when he did his awesome solo it really sounded to me like he was using the G major pentatonic with the Blue Note [Music] thank you [Music] so this G major extended scale really helps you create movement when you solo D note here in the 12th fret G note in the 12th fret G note and the tenth fret a little later in the video I'm going to break down some of these lick ideas hey if this lesson is helpful hit that like button I really do appreciate all your support but we can also look at this as d mixolydian because Sweet Home Alabama starts with a d chord and the melody always resolves to the note of d we can definitely look at this with the tonal Center being d we're not going to get into modes in this video but we can easily use the D minor and the D major pentatonic scale over this track also so let's listen how the D minor pentatonic sounds over these three chords [Music] foreign [Music] so after I break down all three of these scales I'm going to show you an advanced way to mix all three of these together and that's where the magic really happens so really looking at the D minor pentatonic but the extended version which I had up on the screen this is a great way to play the scale don't abandon the first position the extended version really gives you a chance to create some movement to those notes [Music] and also the Blue Note so now let's hear what the D major pentatonic sounds like over this groove [Music] it's amazing all these scales have a completely different sound but they all sound good over this track so I had the extended scale on the screen with the Blue Note just starting on the D in the fifth fret and then the seventh fret of the g strings another D note you can't really go wrong hitting it ending a phrase on a d note in this track I hope you leave a comment just let me know what scale sounds good to your ear so if you want to have fun improvising over the D C and G chords you can just pick one of these scales and just go at it and have a blast but right now I'm going to show you an advanced way to mix these scales together just elements of each scale all combined and then I'll break it down but before I do that let's quickly look at how I'm getting my tone so I'm using the car Mercury V amp set clean with some Reverb then my main Drive pedal which I have on a lot of the time in a lot of these videos also is the J rocket audio Archer pedal and then also just this American-made strand I bought this used so I'm honestly not sure about the model number I just know it sounds good and I have it in the second position so a combination of these two pickups it actually splits this so it's a single coil just gives it a slightly overdriven sound but still a lot of clarity [Music] oh [Music] so let me break down these licks each scale sounds completely different but all sound good so we're looking at the structure of the D major pentatonic for these first two licks [Music] that is just a great way to go up and down the scale I had it on the screen a little while ago but if we just taken this first lick slide up from five to seven on the E string and then hitting the D note in the fifth fret [Music] and then again seventh fret to nine sliding up to nine and then hitting the seventh fret and this is the a note and then seven nine seven and you're back to the D note starting on that D note [Music] this is this is a great you can just do that over this track [Music] and resolving on that D note is your friend on this track for sure so and then doing a band full Bend then as it's bent I was I just really was hitting it with my fingers you can do it with your pick [Music] and then doing a a hammer on and pull off to the D right there so the next Lick in D major pentatonic [Music] love that lick so bending a whole tone here on the B string the the tenth fret of the B string so you're bending a whole tone up to the B note then striking the B note on the seventh fret of the E string and then hitting 10 to 7. and then the next part would be 10 hitting that blue note back to seven on the B string and again then walking down ten nine seven slow [Music] that is a great sounding lick so we're moving up to the D minor pentatonic just using a minor pentatonic lick here foreign in the 13th fret [Music] maybe a quarter Bend half at the most it's just a slight Bend and walking right down the scale 10 13 10. and then a full band [Music] and resolving back to the D note here in the 10th fret so full Bend in the 13th fret of the B string and then hitting the D note there and then walking back down the minor pentatonic for this next lick [Music] so 10 13 10 12. 10 12. then a quick double stop at the end so you're borrowing in the 10th fret the G and B strings in slight Bend and resolving back to the D note in the 12th fret so these next two licks will be in the G major pentatonic see how I'm doing that on all these scales if you use that extension it's really just walking right up each one of those scales and it works great over this track so the first lick [Music] so hitting at the 10th fret sliding up to 12. and then hitting 10 on the a string and then hitting 12 on the a string sliding up to 14. and then hitting 12. so you're got that D note there [Music] next would be so you're just hitting 12 and hammering on to 14. and then hitting the G note in the 12th fret [Music] and then kind of to end a lick of beep going back to D [Music] so you're hitting on 15 and pulling down to 14. foreign on your on your D note here [Music] click that's that's really good and it really resembles what we did before this really has that G major sound so full Bend IN 15th fret and you're actually landing on an E note here in the 12th fret of the E string so bending to an E [Music] 15 12. 15 on the G string back to 12. and then 15 14 12. [Music] great lick both of these licks they work beautiful you know as it resolves to the G so the last lick kind of going up to the D note in the 15th fret so slide up from the G string all the way up to 16. and then hitting the 15th fret of the of the B string [Music] 15 17 [Music] Bend and release so you're hitting 17 and releasing with that bend and landing on that D note now we can walk right down these scales to finish it off a half Bend 17. [Music] and then back to 15. and then sliding from 15 [Music] to 12. hitting 14. 10 and then hitting 11 of the G string and then sliding down from 10. to 7 and hitting nine and the G string and then just finish it off hitting the D note [Music] and really adding that other Lick in there again [Music] that we did earlier [Music] thanks so much for hanging out with me today I had a blast doing this lesson you can just take one of these scales and have a lot of fun try to connect them I hope I gave you some ideas today please leave a comment let me know what scale sounds best to you and we'll see you on the next one
