How to Share Files Between a Linux and Windows Computer

hello YouTube Welcome to my channel my name is Louise and in this video I'm going to show you how you can share folders across Linux and windows so you can share a folder from Windows and access it from Ubuntu or another distro or you can access from Windows a folder in your Linux distro so I'm running Linux from that external SSD and I'm running Windows 11 from the internal SSD of that Lenovo mini computer okay so I I am now on the machine on the right and as you can see Ubuntu 20.04 so we don't have so if we search for machines in our Network we cannot see anything okay so Windows Network so we have to connect to a server okay so I already know the IP address from for my from my Windows computer and I already shared some files so I am accessing here directly on Ubuntu you see directly I can access the files with no problem so how did I get the EP address to add here on the file explorer I will show you later in the video when I switch to the Windows machine how you can find the the EP from the other computer in order you add the connection here okay so we just had a connection SMB with the with your IP address and of course you have to also share and give permissions on on your Windows machine otherwise it's impossible to come here and access the files okay so right now I'm reading files from my Windows computer on the left okay so I have access to all public folders and my own account okay and these are the files inside those folders and now let's copy some some files from this computer from Linux to that computer on my left which is the windows 11 okay just for you to see that it's fully working so these are some wallpapers I will copy this one to the Windows machine and no issues at all the file is there so everything working perfectly okay so now I'm going to open another file explorer this one is called dolphin so I don't know which one you have and again if I search for the windows Network it will not show so I will do the same thing I will create a connection here so right click add entry and again I will this is the connection to the Windows machine so SMB and the IP address from the Windows machine that I will show you how you can find that IP you can change the icon is up to you to select that option or not I did not select and then just click the the share Network that you just added here and also if you have a username on the other machine you can put here to use the password if you have problems you can enter with the same credentials like you you enter on your Windows machine okay so as you can see I can access all the folders the public ones my folder on that machine and also uh that border Tech share is a shared folder that I shared with the picture inside okay good to see the IP address on this computer you put eBay IP space a and then this is the IP address from this computer from the Ubuntu computer okay so now I'm going to share a folder also from this computer to be able to to see it from the Windows machine so select one folder and select local network drive share you put some comments if you want and on the share name you can also share the name allow allow guests create share add permissions automatically and boom so we created the share folder on the Ubuntu let's create a folder inside Okay so let's put something inside that folder to access from the Windows machine okay so let's switch now to the Windows machine so in order to find your IP address you open the terminal and type ipconfig enter and the IP address of this machine will be here that's the one I added on the Linux machine okay so now select this PC so just to show you my my folder so this is my personal folder the public folder with a public pictures that here the picture we copied from the Ubuntu machine it was this one to this to this folder also my private files on my account also was accessible from the Ubuntu machine this is the the folder I shared with with the picture inside a print screen okay so select dspca right click more options add a network drive next and then here we will add exactly like this with the IP address of your Linux computer so remember the file we shared was downloads so I the IP address and then okay like this it will work downloads it was the name we gave on the window on the Linux computer finish and boom here is the drive from the Ubuntu and now these are the files I copy inside for the test now on the network we don't see anything but we have the we have created here the connection directly okay so in order to to to share anything from the Windows machine you need to activate the sharing okay because by default it's not it's not on so you need to put exactly as I have here so turn on Discovery turn on file and printer sharing turn off password protected sharing otherwise it will request you that the password so it's up to you to work with or without password and then save and probably you will need to restart once okay don't forget that also I created this folder you just need to right click properties sharing and then you have to select share okay select share and then Advanced sharing you will give permissions to just to read or to be able to to change the properties okay so I have to put read and write and create and delete folders and change okay so if we don't change the permissions it will let you only read okay but I want to to be able
