[Music] so recently I've been getting messages for tutorials on how to shade using only graphite in fact one guy was kind of angry that I always use charcoal powder to say he wanted a tutorial showing how to shade with only graphite so in this video I'm going to show you how I see the face using only graphite pencils these are the pencils I'll be using for this video I have gone ahead to draw the outline of the face already I use the grid method I have a tutorial on that and I'll put the link for that in the description until now we get started with the eyes of this portrait I am using my 2B pencils to start with the shading and as you can see what I am doing is marking out the darkest areas with the 2B pencil making sure not to touch the light circular white dots which is the main eye shine you also want to take care not to press too hard on the paper especially at this early stage if the 2D pencil is not getting as dark as you would like it to don't resort to pressing harder to make it darker we'll go in with a darker pencil later for now simply shade the bare minimum the 2B can shade and leave it alone after that is done we blend the layers we have created with our tissue and now we repeat the exact shading we did with our Tubi now with our 4B pencil I'm also shading the area around the eye the top and the bottom eyelid and then I blend it's now time to create the darkest parts of the eyes and this is the pupil that is this dark circular dot in the iris I apply moderate pressure with my 7B graphite pencil for this dark part of the iris and I also focus on the dark band or the dark ring around the iris the iris is done but the skin around the eye is still quite bright and so to fix that I shade with my 6B pencil to make the skin around the eye darker now you also notice that I am shading the eyelashes only after I am done with the skin I have a tutorial on drawing eyelashes which I will link in the description so I follow the exact process for shading the second eye starting with the lightest pencil and working my way to the darkest [Music] foreign [Music] and now I move to the nose the goal now is to find areas that have the darkest tunes and starts with those now this would include the sides of the nose as well as the bottom of the nose now can you guess the pencil we are using here for the base layer to start the shading yes it is the 2B graphite pencil so we start with our lightest pencil and right now our lightest pencil here is the 2B graphite pencil I blend with the tissue and now I move to the next darkest pencil on our list which is the 4B pencil after that I blend and I go in with the next darker pencil also which is the 6B graphite pencil and so that is the formula for shading with graphite you don't just rush in with one pencil and hope to finish the whole drawing in 30 minutes you take your time starting with a light pencil and then you add more pencil until get to the point where you don't even need to add more pencils and right now with this 6B graphite pencil I think the nose looks dark enough so we can stop here of course you might go in later after we have finished the whole drawing to make things look better but for now we stop here for the nose now for the lips unlike the nose that is relatively smooth you'll find some texture with the lips that is do those wrinkled lines and so what I did was that I drew this wrinkled lines along with every layer of the shading what do I mean when I shaded the lips with the 2B pencil I added the major wrinkle lines I blended and then I went in with my 4B pencil I also shaded and I emphasize the wrinkle lines I also did the same with the 6B pencil then finally at the end I added the minor thinner white lines with my kneaded Eraser pinching it to form a sharp line and then applying it on the lips foreign for you to catch up you can check out my patreon for over seven hours of this tutorial to watch How I do this portrait in real time nothing is sped up the videos have a voiceover narration and you can get the exact measurement of the paper I used so you can follow me step by step check it out at patreon.com Jason legendary art and now we move to the next major feature the cheeks so just as I did with the nose and the lips I started with my 2B and then my 4B and lastly my 6B pencil you'll also notice that I am focusing my shading on the sides of the face because the sides of the face is where the shadow is prominent to easily find areas of the face with more Shadows something you can do is to increase the contrast of the reference photo when you increase the contrast the demarcation between the highlights and the shadows will become more visible so it will be easy for you to tell the shadows and the highlights apart now at this point it is also vital for me to mention the technique I am using to shade I am shading using circular motions but why is circular motions you may ask you see my normal method for drawing is that I shade first with graphite and then I top over with charcoal powder so it doesn't matter how rough the graphite shading is the drawing will eventually come out smoother when I add the charcoal powder but this is not the case here we are not adding charcoal powder and all we have is graphite to work with so it is very vital that we make our shading smooth from the early stages and there is no better way to make our shading smooth than to use circular motions that is creating little circles with your pencil Strokes foreign [Music] I also repeat this shading process for the neck now we move to the head scarf I start by finding the dark creases for the folds I use my 4B pencil to Mark out the dark lines or the dark creases and then I shade the rest of the headscarf with my 2B pencil next I use my 6B pencil to Mark out the dark lines again and then I shade the rest of the headscarf with my 4B pencil all that is left now is the darker head scarf itself and this is no issue at all the majority of the scarf is just a plain black surface so all I just did was I shaded it with plain black leaving some areas to be of a brighter black so to speak after that is done I make some adjustments to darken some parts of the skin and brighten some of the highlights that may have gotten dirty and after all of that we have this [Music] and well that is it we finally have an all graphite pencil tutorial it's funny how we didn't have one until now but well now we do but if you are a little Advanced and you are serious about creating realistic drawings I will advise you to find a way to add charcoal powder to your drawings but if you are just a beginner or you don't have charcoal powder you can follow the steps in this tutorial to create with only graphite but when you eventually get a cool powder the video that shows up on the screen now will be waiting for you it will show you how you can incorporate charcoal powder into your drawing workflow watch that yes that and I'll see you in the next one
