foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] what's happening everybody welcome back today we're going to be doing a video on how to set valve lash on a solid roller camshaft with Stud girdles and with cold valve lash when you have aluminum heads with a cast iron block you always want to set your valve lash tighter cold I'll insert a pitcher from Motor Trend here yeah guys uh we're going to be doing the valve lash video today I'm going to go through and show you guys uh how to do it with Stud girdles you never want to remove your stud girdles and then set your valve lash and then put your stud girdles back on because it will change the numbers on your lash when you go to put your stud girls back on and tighten everything up so I'll go through and show you the proper way of doing it with Stud girdles and uh first thing that we're going to do though I'm going to stick my distributor back in now that we got it locked out I'm going to go ahead and stick that back in before we start rolling the engine over that way I don't lose um where I have it set because I know exactly where the the rotor was pointing when I pulled it so it's just as easy as me sticking it back in now and uh that way I don't have to go through and put it back in time I got everything all marked out so I'm gonna get everything set up and uh get you guys on the the tripod and I'm going to get the distributor installed and then we'll bring you guys back and I'll show you the proper way of setting your valve lash on a solid roller camshaft with Stud girdles with aluminum heads and a cast iron block and uh guys stick around to the end of the video we got some news um that we want to share with you guys uh regarding uh the misses racing and we also had a couple people message me and was asking about uh when we were at the track with Tyler and Amani uh what combination he has so we'll go over that one more time with everybody uh and let everybody know what uh combination he has in that car and uh stick around guys we'll be right back with you [Music] foreign we got our distributor installed we're at top dead center on our harmonic balancer so we're all good there what tools you're going to need to do this job guys you're going to need a seven thirty seconds t-handled allen wrench a 9 16 open-end box end wrench and a set of fueler gauges as you guys can see on this fueler gauge here I got 12. like that picture I showed you earlier Motor Trend um different websites are going to have different numbers but that particular one and I usually go by you know either four to six thousands tighter with the aluminum heads and cast iron block um so my cam is a lunati solid roller 600 600 and the cam specs call for 16 lash sixteen thousands hot lash when the engine's hot so I usually go four so that's going to give me my 12. you can go you know if we went by Motor Trends uh chart there uh we would have to set them at 10. cold and then when they heat up it'll be 16 but uh you know a couple thousandths neither here or there the looser the rocker arm you know the looser your lash you're going to get more uh RPM out of it the tighter the Lash you're going to get more lift out of your uh your cam obviously now the tighter the Lash I you know I don't like running very tight lash because you have a chance of hanging the valves open if you go too tight so I always go a little bit on the looser side so I usually go to the four thousandths uh tighter when cold that way when it heats up it's going to be like 18 if uh you know the Motor Trend website is correct but I'm gonna get you guys on the tripod I got the tripod set up over here so we're gonna get you set up on that and uh we'll walk you through on how I do this and uh I'll put you guys back on the time lapse and go through the rest of the cylinders I'll just show you the number one cylinder uh you don't need to sit here and watch me go through every single cylinder you'll get the just of it uh on me doing just the number one cylinder so I'll put you guys back on the time lapse after I get the number one cylinder done and then uh I'll go through and get the rest of them done then we'll come back and we're going to talk about the good news that the misses gave me about racing all right hang with us all right hopefully everybody can hear me here the method that I use is called the eoic method it stands for exhaust opening intake closing so what that means is we want to watch our number one rocker here which is our exhaust rocker and if anybody ever has belts and which one's the intake which one's exhaust you're they all line up your exhaust lines up with your header tubes and your intake will line up with your intake runner but what we're looking for is any movement on our exhaust rocker to when the valve starts to open that'll mean we can come over here to the intake side because we'll know it's on the base circle of the cam and we can set our intake and then when we have this one set we want to go over and roll the engine over until the intake valve goes all the way down which means it's all the way open and then when it starts to close we come over here and set the exhaust side which in turn would put the base circle of the cam on the exhaust so what we're going to do now we're going to just tap the engine over until we see any movement on our exhaust rocker which is right there so we know now that it's on the base circle of the intake so what we want to do now we just want to come I got my 12 000 Steeler gate I'm just going to come in here and check and man they feel good I don't even know if I want to actually mess with it but for instructional purposes I guess I can walk you through what we would want to do we would take and get our seven thirty seconds allen wrench we put our box in on here we would break our Allen bolt loose so the inner poly lock is loose we would come through and loosen up our stud girdle lock a little bit and that would give us movement to turn this nut if we wanted to change this so we're pretty good there go ahead and stick this in here just man like I said that's uh pretty good but we're good back her off just a hair tighten the poly lock back down come through that's beautiful so now we know our intake set so what we would do would come through tap our engine over until our intake valve goes all the way down which is open and then starts to close there it is going down which is opening the valve foreign which I want a little far so we're going to roll this over again okay it's starting to close so we'll come over here to the exhaust and man that's perfect too so I'm gonna go ahead and lock this down I'm not even going to mess with the exhaust one because we're perfect all right beautiful we're going to go through and double check the intake now that the powder the stud girdle tighteners tight I shouldn't have loosened it because now it feels a little loose go figure right I'm gonna loosen this bag up and we're just going to give this loosen the poly lock up and we're just going to give it just a snug which it don't take much there we go that's perfect we're going to tighten our stud girl back back up our lap back up and double check everything oh it's beautiful that's money right there go through one just get the inners one last block and there we have it easy peasy nothing to it but you never want to take the stud girdles off guys the time you get the geometry back to where they start to clamp on your poly locks they can twist it either up or down or side to side and it will throw your measurements off trust me how ask me how I know that through experience I thought I had them all perfect I put my stud girdles back on and they were totally off so I learned the hard way but this is the correct way to do it like I said it's called the eoic method exhaust opening intake closing you can't go wrong with it all right I'm going to put you guys back on the time lapse and I'm going to go through the rest of them [Music] all right valve train complete 100 all readjusted everything is set at 12 000 cold Lash so now we can go ahead and get our spark plugs put back in it we can get our steering shaft put back in it we can get the carburetor put back on it we can get this thing fired back up again awesome but on other news uh after we posted that video of Tyler taking his 81 money to ugly Dragway I had a couple people in the comments asking about the combination because I said in my video that it was a super simple combination and they asked if I could kind of go over it so I'll go over it one more time with everybody it's just a 350 board 30 over which would make it a 355 cubic inch it's got a steel crank scat rods with a flat top piston it's got a 242 488 uh Comp Cam in it it's got elderbrock E Street 202 160 aluminum heads uh with a 180 intake runner or 185 one of the two um a 750 brawler carburetor MSD Pro Bill HEI distributor it's got a brand new 350 turbo transmission completely redone by a Tony over at Mid Michigan trance it has a Hues 3500 B converter in it which stands for Billet and uh out back it's got a eight and a half inch out of a Grand National with uh 390 gears uh 275 60 r15 Hoosier drag radials so there you go um nice combination that's proven um everything worked I was very very surprised at how everything worked uh with the camshaft I mean I knew that the engine was good you know he's got a lot of good parts in it but the camshaft I knew was a baby camshaft in my eyes that's just an RV camshaft is all that is something you would put in like a tow rig or you know an RV cam is what they call them it's not a big cam shaft at all so for what it did I was very very impressed I think uh off the trailer it went 1280 uh the best was a 1262 at 100 and uh 108.7 mile an hour so very very respectable but uh on more news uh as we were sitting there me and the misses in the Tahoe watching Ty you know in between me videoing and he was out doing his thing uh Jennifer looked over and she said that she would like to get herself a car and then me and her and the boys put it together you know in the garage here and that way she can race you know she don't want to race the El Camino she don't want nothing real fast she just wants something simple um you know like a Regal Cutlass Monte Carlo I'm looking for a G-Body but uh you know just like a 350 mile built uh something that she can go have fun with and I was like that is awesome that would be so cool to build with her out in the garage you know on our spare time of in between Daily Life come out here with her and then put her something together so if you guys go if you guys could please leave in the comments hell yeah for Jennifer um that would be sweet uh I would love to see her but on the track and then have fun and unrace so but uh that was the news that I've been holding out on you guys and uh it's going to happen I mean she wants to I'm definitely going to make it happen um so we're going to be on the lookout for a car for her and uh we're going to get her into the seat and going down the track so but anyways guys this video is getting pretty long um I
