you can already produce this sound hi my name is ELISA and today I'm going to teach you how to roll your R's so you clicked on this video because you're either learning Italian learning Spanish some other language that requires this sound or perhaps for a singer and you need to be able to sing in one of these languages and the R is very difficult for some people but it's necessary for those languages I spent 3 years speaking Italian without this sound without this R because French is my second language I was kind of producing this R that was more at the back of the throat as opposed to the are we learning today which is more of the front of the mouth so I'm here to tell you that you can already produce this sound if you are Canadian American Australian and even if you're from the UK and perhaps you don't use this son I'm not entirely sure but if you can at least mimic the way that I say it that you can pronounce the R the reason for this is because we actually use this sound every single day and I've used it several times without you even realizing as I've been speaking and accents like mine we put a lot of D's all over the place so we do not pronounce heart of T's as much as someone from the UK would today I'm going to teach you two types of ours the single R and the double r you will hear the single R which is technically called the alveolar tab in words like say it up and you'll hear the double R or the alveolar trill in words like for today and today I'm going to teach you how to do both of those let's start with the alveolar tap so this one is much easier because we actually use this all the time in English if you take a word like better better and I want you to say better and think about where your tongue is and you'll actually realize that your tongue is doing a little flick on your alveolar Ridge if you trace of your mouth with your tongue and you start to feel like the roof of your mouth goes up right where it starts to go up that's our alveolar Ridge so your tongue needs to hit that and that's how you produce the our sound today we're going to learn to say the word say it up which means evening in Italian so we're going to do this by using the word better in English to kind of make us think about what sound we're making when we say that word what sound we're trying to make so when you say the word better better your tongue is flicking your alveolar Ridge as you say that we're better okay it's not better where a lot of air is being expelled from the mouth it's better your tongue is just flicking the top and we do this for convenience in English in certain accents think about where your tongue is and what I want you to do is I want you instead of trying to say say it up with the Italian art because you can't really do it yet I want you to say the word say it up but instead of trying to put an R there put a D in place of the R and when you do that do not do the D like the one where you expel tons of air do not say say duh duh duh you want the same do you used when you said better so just think seda said sit and you'll think that you're saying indeed but everyone else is actually interpreting that as an art so what I want you to do is practice same words in Italian I prefer a word and with two fouls around it because I just personally found that easier when I begin I personally learned on the word say it up which is why I'm giving it to you today so take that are replace it with a D in your head but you're using that D that we use it better so better say it I better say it I don't know if you can hear that but it's pretty much the exact same sound and that's how I learned to do it so now I can say perfectly this second R I'm going to teach you is the alveolar trill which you'll hear in words like it took me I think four years to figure out how to produce this sound because people kept saying big things like oh just vibrate your tongue oh just put your tongue in this part of your mouth and just vibrate it and that's not easy for everyone some people you get these sounds naturally but I honestly couldn't but because I already knew and hopefully you know how to produce the single art after seeing the first half of this video but because I already knew how to do the single art I said okay it is different from the double arm but it's the same tongue placement so let me just try to trick my brain saying the first half of a word with the arm and then the second half of the word so I split the arse into let's take the word for today because it's the word that was most obvious I would always say what I what I and people would kind of make fun of me so we're gonna use that word because it's a really useful one in a time it means I would like by the way what you do is you take for the first half of the word and you take had I the second half of the word and because you can't make that beautiful vibration II what I sound yet what I want you to do is say the first half make a short pause and then say the second half of the word just say board by board that I bought today and just do it like that for a while when next time you speak to someone go go have a video call with someone if you know anyone who's Italian just practice with them make a little tiny pause in between the first and the second half of the word I think it took one or two days not even it might have even taken a couple of hours I can't remember exactly but my brain just did the work for me my tongue just was so tired of doing a double tap that it just rolled and I know that sounds strange but that's literally the only way I can learn it because every I just absolutely would not work today for day for today for today for today okay and it just came now it's not going to be perfect the first time you do it but you will get used to it it's less vague than me just telling you go vibrate your tongue you just practice that for a while I'm giving you something very specific that I want you to practice so to recap for the alveolar tap in the vision that are in the word of Santa as a D the D that I spoke about and you should be able to do it for the alveolar trail cut that word into two parts and make a tiny little pause in the middle of it I'm not sure about other languages but at least an Italian pronouncing a single art as opposed to a double art can change the meaning of the word of trying to say so that's why getting the double R is also very important a famous example is karo and kagura gato means expensive and kagra means a carriage so it's totally different I'm sure people will understand that you're not a native speaker but in order to avoid confusion it's always better just to say properly I spent so much time not being able to pronounce it and I'm so happy now that I can I honestly really hope it worked for you I know how frustrating it was for me when I was trying to learn Italian and you know producing perfect sounds are not that important to everyone but for me it was super important I really really care about pronouncing things correctly and trying to sound as close to a native speaker as possible and that's the whole reason I created this video because when I was trying to learn that I couldn't find any video that helped me absolutely you know if this worked for you leave me a thumbs up if you think it was a helpful video especially if it helped you learn it and if it did work and leave me a comment please tell me how long it took you to learn it how long you've been trying to learn it for I really want to create a little mini community on YouTube that's it that's all I have for today and thank you so much for watching I will see you next time bye you
