[Music] what are blackheads so today we're taking at the iron because I'm gonna record a little video basically showing this blackhead how to ride it and since I'm showing her how to ride it to figure 2 might as well just make a recording and for anybody out there that's wanting to know how to ride a motorcycle I'll show you she wanted me to show her on the Harley iron 883 versus the sport bike so r6 so we're taking the we're taking the iron out Oh what is this parking lot oh my god is this a fun spot partner this parking lot is great perfect for what I need it for all right so the wind is blowing a little bit so hopefully there's not too much wind noise on the mic and all that stuff we are in the parking lot of fun spot right this is an awesome parking lot so miss blockhead has actually recently picked up her interest again in learning to ride a motorcycle so she's been looking up a lot of YouTube videos and a lot of those YouTube videos are kind of like they skip over some stuff and you know like they're kind of hard to understand I've I've previously been an instructor not a motorcycle instructor an instructor for firearms so I do have experience teaching so I'm gonna try and be kind of thorough basically I told her that I would make a video for her showing her how to use you know like the clutch and the throttle and shift and you know brake and downshift and all that good stuff so I'm gonna kind of be starting from bare bones step 1 you know showing you how to ride a motorcycle now step 1 find yourself a big open empty parking lot like like this one if you can get one with a really awesome backdrop like this with rollercoasters that's that's even better but it's not required another thing I would highly recommend doing before you know getting on a motorcycle if you've already made the decision that you want to learn how to ride and you want to get a motorcycle pickup and this is funny because I totally still have this pick up a MSF basically the motorcycle safety foundation basic rider course handbook so the rider handbook and this goes over like everything that you need to know it doesn't really make sense kind of a first whenever you're just looking at it but I mean it's got pretty much everything you need to know I'm not gonna be going crazy in depth over here like all talking about all the different kinds of bikes and stuff but if you want to pause the screen right there that's you know a bunch of different kinds of bikes you've got you know primary controls which we're going to be going over those we're going to be going over the gear shift lever the clutch lever the throttle front brake rear brake basically everything you see here so you've got the speedometer which on the Sportster this is by the way a Harley Davidson iron 883 Sportster that I've done a lot of stuff too it's a 2013 the speedometer traditionally will be right here from Center but I have relocated mine so you've got a speedometer your tachometer like I said this bike doesn't have one you can't add one but hey I choose not to because I can listen to the engine you've got your your kill switch or your engine cutoff switch or run switch for that matter so basically this switch right here and then you've got your starter which is this button right here that's not going to do anything unless you have this one basically on so the process of starting it we'll go over that you've got your mirrors any street-legal bike should have mirrors these are mounted below because if they're mounted up top my arms and shoulders tend to get in the way so I mattered them down below and I can see perfect with them you've got your front brake which is this lever right here your front brake is going to be responsible for 70% of your stopping power so that is going to be like your main brake right but you do want to use them together you've got your throttle which is on your right side and in order to use your throttle you're going to want to basically pull back on it which causes the engine to rev higher and you're going to be using that in relationship to your clutch lever and your clutch so you do also on the right side you have your rear brake which is right here and your rear brake it's going to be responsible for your rear brakes obviously your rear tire that's going to be 30% of your stopping power you also have your foot pegs what your feet are going to go onto whenever you get on the bike right so if you're on the bike all right so I've got one there got one there these are called mid controls there are a lot of bikes that have them up here those are called forward controls and you do also have passenger foot pegs which are these right here there's one there and then there's one that comes out right there as well so those are foot pegs you have your gearshift lever which is right here this is what you're going to use to press down and up to shift through your gears you're going to do basically from neutral one down into first and then you're going to pull up through neutral into second and then third and then fourth and then fifth so it has five gears there are lots of bikes out there that have six gears but traditionally it's one down four up or one down five up but so basically the sequence of that starting from the bottom you have first neutral second third fourth fifth right and then some some bikes have that sixth gear so the neutral is after first so like I said one neutral why it's like that there's a bunch of people that have theories of why it's like that a lot of people say it's so you can just like if you're in a bind you can quickly push down into first gear you know like if somebody's coming up behind you really quickly it's more natural to like react and push down quickly and get out of the way then it is to try and get your foot under the lever and pull up right so that kind of makes sense and I've actually I've actually had to do that before so it definitely makes sense on the left side you have your horn which is here you have once again your turn signals which on the on this model this is going to be a left turn signal that's gonna be a right turn signal like I said a lot of bikes have it on just one side my Yamaha r6 has it just on the left side and you press a lever to the left and it blinks left press the lever to the right and it blinks on the right you press it inwards to cancel the turn signals you also have your clutch lever very important obviously you can't do anything without your clutch lever this basically provides Howard to the bike so if you've got to pulled in there is no power going to the transmission from the engine if you've got it let out there is full power going from the engine to the transmission right so if you're ever if you ever panic if there's any like time you need to stop just pull that in and you were cutting all power from the bike whatsoever so anyways now that we got all that kind of parts and controls out of the way and stuff I'm gonna go ahead and go through the process of starting it up so here you're gonna have your ignition you've got off accessory and then ignition right it's kind of basically just like a car alright so off is there the accessory is gonna turn power under the bike right so there's power on as you can see by that being illuminated and then one more it's basically gonna be sending power to the ignition so you can see that here most bikes whenever there are neutral do have a neutral indicator little oil light is on just because it's on until you start it it's reading like oil pressure so yeah basically process of it is put the key in turn it to ignition you're going to get on the bike from the left hand side right so you're gonna want to swing your leg over and traditionally what I do hand on handlebar right here swing your leg over this hand on I was usually pulled a break just so the bike doesn't roll anywhere you know just in case it as a neutral and kind of push forward pull break so yeah just to show you guys that again and you can actually put hand on brake first if you want so alright lean over hands on and where's leg up over sit on and then bring it up right until it's centered right there great so it's not going anywhere got it nice balance set it up you can pull the whole the handlebars these are the handlebars this is a top clamp these are indicator lights or a lot of people call them dummy lights as well so you're going to pull that up until you're nice and centered find your balance keep it right there right so you've got the key in the ignition you've got it turned on you're gonna hit your basically your kill switch or your run switch to run and you're going to hear it you're the fuel pump start up all right usually I wait for the check engine light to turn off each bike is different once again so you might not have that at this point you're going to hold in the starter alright so hold it in and it's going to start up okay all right so you've got the bike started up usually if you're just starting it from a coal desert you want to let it warm up first you know just leave it I like with fuel injection there's a whole debate about you know some people say you should leave it running for like a minute some people say like you know with non fuel-injected bikes you leave it for running a couple minutes you do need to let the bike warm up the oil needs to basically heat up so it can be more viscous so it can run through the engine better and coat everything better alright so like I said we are in neutral which means that the the bike can basically move forwards and backwards freely right so I can push it forwards I can walk it backwards so after you start it up you've got your balance hands on handlebars you're not pulling back on throttle what I do is I kind of push forward here actually you're gonna put your kickstand up get it up and out of the way alright and since it is in neutral you can actually walk the bike forwards and backwards right it's not engaging a gear so it should just roll freely all right so you're able to walk it forwards stop able to walk it backwards all right and just practice doing that for a little bit just kind of walk it around get a feel for it get used to it and kind of turn it a little bit if you want get a feel for turning antlers walk it back or its turn it get a feel for doing that because you're gonna be doing that a lot with a bike you want to get used to that all right so after you've got comfortable doing that you can actually do that without starting up the bike even if you have it in neutral right you just sit here and walk it around you can stand up and walk beside it if you want to get a feel for that I wouldn't recommend it if you're not really comfortable with it because uh if it starts tilting one way or the other like this bike is pretty heavy it's like 560 570 ish pounds so it's on your comfort level so basically we're gonna run through the getting on the bike and start our process once again alright so you are mounting the bike from the left side they say to mount it from the left side because it's leaning left and you're basically pushing your weight into it so that it's not falling over not that it would fall over if you got on them from that side but it's just kind of the proper way to do it right so foot here pull leg up and over sit tilt sit up find the balance nice and balanced up alright you're going to put the kickstand up alright so kickstand is up and out of the way all right now we're going to turn the key to ignition you're going to hit the run switch here and then you're going to hit the starter or the ignition so that's a starting sequence alright so now we're going to work on learning the clutch [Music] you
