hey guys jay here with word advice tv and in this video i'll be showing you how to replace a control board on any hvac unit the good news is that it's actually pretty simple but i did have a couple of comments of people asking me if i could make a video showing how to replace the control board so here it is these control boards they usually come in a little bag like this that is static shielding you know sometimes when you touch something you get that spark a little shock that little shock is enough to actually take out this control board and another tip that old technicians will tell you is to ground yourself before touching the board i usually just wipe my hands straight on the casing of the unit whether it be a furnace or an ac and that grounds you so you don't have that spark and then you can reach in and take out your new control board so in our example today we're going to be replacing a defrost control board on a goodman heat pump and it looks like this but really the process for replacing any board is going to be pretty much the same but i do want to point out that if the new control board that you get does not look the same as the one that you have in the unit usually those boards will come with instructions and make sure you do read the instructions see this one didn't have any paper or anything because it's the original but if it does look different make sure you read those instructions because many times they do tell you to modify something like put a wire in a different spot or don't put on a wire crimp a wire etc and i have tried installing a control board without reading the instructions and usually that doesn't turn out very well here's the board that we're going to be replacing and there's actually nothing wrong with it i'm just doing it as an example besides this little rust spot it's functioning perfectly fine so what i like to do is just take the whole board off with all the wires still on it usually it's held in place by either a couple of screws or some clips that you have to depress to get the board off so figure out how the board comes off and just take the whole board right off along with all the wires on it and then we can just take it right out look at all those dead spiders on there and now with the old board out of the way we can put the new control board in the same way that the old one was in oh that didn't work well it doesn't fit right here in the corner but that's okay let me try again there you go there we have the new control board in place and now you simply just take one wire off at a time wow that was hot this spot right here is actually hot to the touch so it's actually probably a good thing that i'm replacing this control board because it looks like it is going to burn out pretty soon one of these resistors must be bad or going bad this control board does not have any screw-on terminals like a furnace would have for the thermostat wires there's going to be some screws that hold wires in place with those all you do is just loosen the screws and take those wires out all of these i just have to simply unplug them and plug them into the new board as you're taking all of these wires off i just wiggle them to take them off and generally they actually say not to do that to wiggle them i haven't found much of a difference wiggling them does not really damage the connectors at all but if when you're sliding on the connector onto the new board i like to give it a little tug if that connector is on there really loosely it's just kind of wobbling on there none of these are then you do want to take it back off for example let's just do this one i'll take the df off for example this connector right here if this is super loose then what you want to do is take a pair of pliers needle nose works the best and just pinch each side just a little bit to bring the edge of this connector just a little bit down that way it makes a tighter connection when you put it on the terminal and since there's nothing else exciting about me pulling all these wires off and putting them on here i'll just cut this part out never mind i'm back for a sec this one right here no matter how i'm pulling and wiggling it it's just really stuck on there an easy way to pull these guys out is to just take a flathead screwdriver put it right under the connector and just pull up look how easy that comes out just a quick tip okay we have the new board in and now all that's left is just to test it out make sure everything's working good and we're good to go we have ourselves a winner the emergency heat mode and the cooling mode working great right now it's summer outside so this thing is cooling the suction line is sweating everything is awesome i hope you enjoyed this video thank you so much for watching if you found it helpful don't forget to mash that like button on the way out and i'll see you next time and if you're still here and not in the comment section below listen to this a college professor was giving a big test upon collecting all the exam papers she noticed a 100 bill neatly clipped to one of the papers with a note that said a dollar for every point please the next day the professor returned the note with forty dollars change [Music] you
