[Music] well we're just across the north carolina border headed for rock hill south carolina a lot of civil war even revolutionary war history in these parts teresa curtis requested a house call for a window that seems to have lost its view hi theresa good morning ron how you doing fine how are you good very good kind of cool here for south carolina yes it is now you've got a problem with your window yes i do you wanna show me what it is yeah sure come on around okay now which room is this this is my son's room the problem is clearly or not so clearly condensation between the panes of glass oh yeah yeah this is typical on these double glazed windows where you've got two pieces of glass and you've got an air space in between right and then the seals around the edge fail right you know what um we just i think should just replace this whole window okay so um why don't we make some measurements and pick up a new window and then we'll come back and put it in okay sounds good okay to get the exact measurement of the windows rough opening i'll need to remove the window trim a wide putty knife between the wall and the pry bar keeps the wall from being damaged okay we've got all of our window trim off now this is what i'm looking for right here this edge and this edge this is our rough framing opening and that's what we want to measure to make sure the new window will fit inside here 34 and a half inches 34 and a half okay now let's measure from the top up here back outside we'll need to dismantle the window's exterior trim after removing the aluminum molding we cut away all of the old caulking then it's time to loosen and then pry out the old frame the wood won't come free without some splintering but we're going to be replacing it later on now oftentimes you remove an old window like this by taking it out from the outside but this one wants to go inside because it's separating right here from the brick mold so teresa you got a hold of it yes i do okay it's gonna i'm gonna want to come into you now there you go we prepped the old window opening by clearing out all of the old insulation and dried out caulk so go ahead and position this you can bring the saw blade down because the old windows opening is a bit wider than what we'll need for the new window theresa cuts some 1x4 pine and will act as a spacer to make up the difference here guy ron okay good job let's just drill a couple pilot holes here okay okay just tap that injuries if you would okay [Music] all right here's our new window okay set it right on the edge bring it back a little bit closer to the edge there you go and then just lay it down perfect all right now on the sides there's this flange right here okay which you want to bend down so that it's perpendicular to the side of the window now that metal flange that we just bent down it's going to get nailed to this two by four framing right here it's really important that we get a good seal want to keep out the moisture and the dress so teresa if you could just hand me the caulking gun i'm going to put a heavy bead of caulking right on the inside of that flange starting here going all the way down to the other end after theresa finishes caulking her side all that's left to do is to slip the window into the opening okay theresa okay i'm gonna set it right in now let me lift the bottom a little bit here now that's what i call a perfect fit now we head back inside to make sure the window is seated properly we level the window by inserting wooden shims between the edge and the framed opening a little nudge and we're there back outside we're ready to secure the window first by nailing that flange into the frame in a brick veneer house like this one there'll be a space between the brick and the wood framing to fill that gap i'll first caulk around the window flange and then install a piece of 2x4 which i've cut to fit then we fill the remaining gap with aerosol urethane foam insulation now it's back to the power miter box to cut the exterior trim pieces teresa cuts the 45 degree angles while i do the installation once again plenty of caulk for a good seal and up it goes theresa and i then take turns on the nail gun good a final bead of caulk will seal any spaces between the wood and brick well we're back inside and these are the shims or spacers that go between the window and the framing i secure these shims with a nail gun then teresa uses a utility knife to score and then break away the excess for the shims that are too thick for the knife i use one of my smaller japanese hand saws neat little hole there theresa replaces the insulation to keep those drafts out we surround the window with a casing which will conceal the space or gap between the window and the wall we are going to recycle one thing this is the old window sill and we're going to slip it right in here i just had to trim a little bit off okay then we add decorative molding on top of the casing [Music] okay tracy on the line okay and flush at the top [Music] so how was it for you working with the tools oh it was great at the end of the day the final step is to rehang the curtains take a look haze is all gone come tomorrow morning you can see forever that's right good job [Music]
