Piper on I've got a dreaded dripping taps today in my bathroom these taps have a tat valve or bath tap cartridge inside them to de so today's video is all about where to get them from and how to replace them for those of you who like to challenge at the end of the video I'll be looking at how you can clean and repair your existing valves [Applause] now admittedly the taps features in today's video are fairly specific Victorian style bathroom taps but don't click away because everything I tell you in today's video on how to remove the tap valves right through to traps for the unwary in terms of buying your new top valves applies whatever sort of tap you've got all you never need to do at the end of the video is google your specific tap to see how to take it apart and then everything else I've told you in this video applies I'll try to play some links in the description at the end of the video to help you along your way with this now I'm doing this video today because I think this is a classic conundrum for us DIYs I bet this wash down a couple of years ago out of an old Victorian sidewall I guess covered and I bought these taps from Victorian plumbing it was twenty nine nine to five for the parish I thought was an absolute bargain they were actually gone up a bit now they're 39 pounds 95 and when they started dripping recently I took my palm I'm going to show you how to take the top off in a minute to get this cartridge out took it to my local plumbing trade counter and showed it to the guy who was completely disinterested look at all that is you're going to have to try and beat to the manufacturers to find out what it is didn't have a clue couldn't even give me any help on this so I phoned up Victorian plumbing they were really helpful they put me in touch with the supplier that they got the taps from and they also also told me the code for this little thing it's called a Vic for VR for but don't worry about the case because there's more on that and the buying guide later on in the video so then I was able to phone up the supplier of the cartridge itself and they send me some more but the point is these things are readily available but not everyone knows what they are anyway not me talking let's take the tap apart so that you can see how to get this out now obviously before you can take a part time you've got to switch off the water that's going into it if you're lucky you will have an isolator valve on the pipe below the tap I've put these in here when I do the plumbing for the or stand so this is the valve that supplies mains water pressure to the tap so I'm literally putting my screwdriver in and turning the valve at 90 degrees to switch off water if you don't have an isolator valve which is quite common in older properties and you're replacing the cold water tap that has a main supply you're gonna have to find the stopcock which is the tap that switches amazing otter on/off where it comes into your property but if it's the hot water tap valve that you're replacing and you've got a cold water storage tank in the roof you might need to find shutoff valve like this one here which connects the hot water tank to you the tap you haven't got a shutoff valve where you're struggling to find that it might be easiest to turn off the stopcock assuming you've found that and then run the hot water until the tank in the lot is drained when you shut off the water don't forget to open the taps to make sure there's no water coming out before you start taking them apart also before you start taking the tap apart it's a really good idea to put the plug in to stop anything going down the plughole and nearly lost to screwdriver bits yes they'll keep doing exactly this so this tap has a little cap on the top this used to say cold it's rubbed off rather like that says hot and this actually unscrew this but you may have when I first unscrew this I did actually have to get some pliers on it here's my long nose pliers unscrew the cap but once you get it started it comes off pretty easily and then you'll see inside you just see that in there that is there's a little screw that you have to remove that's a Philips head ph2 screw that is an important point but the screws themselves up they are very soft and if you use the wrong screw bit like pizzetta - as I did use on one of the other taps if the screw is slightly tight you can end up knackering the screw thread as I did so make sure you check the screw and use the right screw bit to remove it so I remove a screw now once that comes out this section with the little screw in it can be removed no what's that's been removed you need to remove this collet here again if it is slightly hot remove you can put a few coats of masking tape around it like that and then it use a wrench like this just to sort of gently get it started and then it would come off pretty easily we're nearly done now what we need to do is get a spanner all of this on the cartridge valve itself and just stop turning it to remove it from the tap and whilst doing this you want to hold the body of the tap to prevent it turning because if it does turn that can damage the pipe work beneath so that's the cartridge or tap valve removed now what's really interesting here I don't know whether when I was playing in the system I just conveniently switched over the hot and the cold tap caps on the top of the taps and don't think I did but if you look at this tat valve it's got a red washer on the bottom that is for the hot water tap but it's been used for the cold water so I there was a similar drama wrong in the factory or I have done something when I installed a couple years ago I'm gonna give Victoria Plumbing the benefit the dye on this but either way when you look at a new one the blue signifies cold water now buying a new ceramic tap hub is not as straightforward as you think the visual here on screen now just shows you how many different types of tap valve there are and my experience trying to replace my tap valves is a case in point so just look at this this is the original tap valve that I was trying to replace this was at at valve I was sent by the Victorian plumbing manufacturer and whilst it looks pretty similar it's got too many teeth on the spindle on the top and so yes I went and bought another said briston tap valves from screw fix and whilst a number of teeth is correct it's clearly much longer than either the original or the manufacturer replacement so what I'm saying to you is don't just callous graphics and buy a tablet that looks similar to the one you need because the chances are you'll get caught out like I did I think my father passed best place to buy your replacement at vows is eBay eBay you always think I was an auction site but actually it's a fantastic place to buy hardware I'm hungry that sort of thing now I've also got to leave you to do your own research but there are a couple of pointers having put in a ceramic top valve into the search box in eBay pulls up a couple of options this one looks pretty good great thing about these sellers is they're really keyed into the fact that this is a difficult process to get right so they show you all the dimensions including crucially number of teeth on the spleen and then you can scroll through and you can find the right type valve for your tap and then once you've identified the right one for example m-52 here click on it and it automatically puts the code into the box into your shopping basket box so that's fantastic and I wish had done that by my tech vows there are also other sellers as well I'll leave you to google these this one here similarly shows you the different codes in the pictures and then it goes straight into the model number box for when you're ordering the other point to just quickly mention at this stage because this might also catch you out when you're buying your new tap valve just check the direction of turn to open the valve you'll obviously want to make sure that your replacement valves operate the taps in the same way as you have done otherwise it'll drive you crazy so from the drop-down list make sure you pick the right option it's not crucial to get this right because you can actually change the setting by taking the valve apart but best to get it right so that you don't have that fiddly job to do later so installing the new top valve really couldn't be more simple I'm literally going to place it into the hole screw it up and then turn neck with my adjustable spanner now it's back on with the collar and then it's on with the tap screw goes back in the top and then it just needs to be tightened up then just a question of putting the little cap back on the top and then I just need to switch the water back on the repair is complete so that leads on to the final point of this video for any of you who are still watching and so that's occurred to me whilst actually making this video because I'll actually have to take apart of the valve because the new valves I got had the wrong thread on them what became really obvious to me is that the old valve so I've replaced the ceramic is absolutely bone-dry there's no lubricants on it that's all should be that way up you can hear that scratching away against this stuff however you can actually take apart the vows really easily by removing by hand the circlip on the spindle and the new vows you can see here our have a coating of I think something what must be silicon grease that basically lubricates and I'm guessing also creates some sort of seal now any plumbers watching this video feel free in the comment section to tell me I'm talking complete rubbish but my point is for five pounds forty nine a link coming up on the screen now to some grease that is being sold by a seller on ebay but I've also heard of people using Vaseline you could get a top of this silicon grease and apply it to your existing tat valve now that I've shown you how easy it is to take them apart and see whether that fixes the leak before you apply the silicone it might be an idea to watch the o-rings in warm soapy water and actually put these ceramic discs themselves in a descaler if you live in a hard water area to get rid of any limescale deposits but have a closer look at the ceramic discs themselves because if they are slightly scratched and the chances are that's where the dripping is coming from and in that situation you will need to replace them so I really hope you found today's video useful as of details of all the tools I've used in
