hi I'm Craig Phillips and in this video I'm going to show you how to prepare and point Old Stone wig now the preparation is key to any project like this because not only do you have to rake out all the old mortal in between the blocks you also have to remove all of this cannot live materials that's growing in between the blocks and of course doing it damage the more that goes in it's tough to expand them start to break the face of the brickwork away and disrupt the wall using a nice sharp pointy cold chisel and allow you to get in between nice and deep around the clock you want to try to break away all the surface where it's soft and of course get out anything that may be growing in between there and come across any stubborn little weeds girl in there you can also get your pliers and pull them out now we've chiseled out all of the old loose mortar from around the blocks removed all the old vegetation that we don't want in there just using a soft brush brush out as much as the dust as possible and then you can get yourself a sprayer and spray in between them joints get rid of all the dust and then it's ready to start pointing now if your new mortar mix for the Poynting is very important that you get the ratio mix right we're using three sounds to one cement not only for its strength but for it too : now before you add water and complete your mix you can also consider having the colored dye to the mortar to give it a darker color when it's complete it come in various different colors make sure you measure it out and read the instructions on the back now you're ready to apply your water that's the mix now complete and that's the kind of consistency we're looking for now this is the type of pointing we want to achieve on block wick like this but it can't be done straight away it has to be done in stages so once you've mixed your water up get a small amount of it on your pork get your pointing trash and then start to apply in the areas like this pushing it in really deep fill in all of the gaps between each one of the blocks you're putting the mortar in to point it up for two different reasons one of course it's going to look good but the main reason is it's gonna actually help with the stability in the structure of the wall so at this point we don't want to really worry about what it looks like of course we want to try to keep the block as clean as possible but once we wash the mortar deep right into the crevice we know it's going to help stabilize the wall but then what we want to do is try and make it stand out proud a little bit just smooth off on the top surface of it so it's kind of gonna look like that once it dries off within 10 or 15 minutes tab you can then start to shape it off and cut away some of those edges on here that way it starts to stand proud a little bit from the block and start to make the actual block itself stand out the shape of it a little bit better of course you're still going to have sharp edges in the actual mortar from the trial itself so again you would leave it there's another ten or fifteen minutes or more or less dry off and then get your damp paintbrush a little bit of water on it and you can just start to brush over it gently and that would give you a little bit more of a a textured finish to it adds round with the edges off of the mortar and takes out all these sharp cuts of it and you're going to create with the trowel after about an hour the mortar will have started to drought you can use a dry soft brush and simply just dust it down don't worry about it looking too new and bright at the moment the mortar joints because given time once it's weathered these old blocks or cannibal and end into the mortar and it will look perfect now if you want to watch any more helpful videos please visit the website silverlinetools.com
