[Applause] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hello everybody Welcome to new online guitar lesson today I'm here to explain you how to proper play melodically over any kind of um chord uh sequence and especially if you have to play over a very easy chord sequence like in only one key like in in this uh case we're going to see it in G major and uh if you don't just want don't want to sound you know too much uh let's say cliche and uh you don't want you you just want to make it a little bit more uh interesting but this is not easy and I see in my students that they struggle a lot in applying Concepts like scales like um AR pages and everything that can be used for uh for guitar solos on one single key normally they don't know how to do it properly and uh uh with this video I'll try to explain you what to do and I will start by very very easy concept but starting from the easiest part you can build it up you can make it grow and grow uh as long as you dedicate enough time to it but before starting this lesson please don't forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel as usual and thanks a lot also guys for all your support because this channel uh started basically from scratch and it is growing little by little so it's it's very uh rewarding for me uh so thanks a lot and don't forget to subscribe and also if you want to um have access to the tabs and the diagrams of each lesson and also you want to have to sustain uh these lessons in this Channel and you want you want to make it grow with me uh you can consider to uh have access to my Pat Page it's very very easy and uh um you can have uh more content for you so nothing else to say let's start and let's do um the work yeah okay what does it mean exactly playing in one single key we have to Define exactly what a key is as first and when I talk about a key I mean one single scale harmonized in different chords okay so for example now we choose to stay in the key of G major okay so whenever I see that we uh are in G major I basically intend that we are um choosing all the chords of the major scale if you if you don't know exactly what does it mean um in short means that um if you want if you want to harmonize one scale you have to build up a cord over each uh degree of the scale over each note of the scale so I explained this concept already in another video but I will explain it again so if we are on G major we have the notes um G A B C D E and F sharp okay so each one of those notes can be harmonized so I can basically build a chord over each one of them so the chord that I will be having as a result will be G major a minor B minor and C Major D major E minor and F sharp diminished okay so um playing over one single key means that I can um choose over uh choose all these chords and uh I can um put them together um basically as much as I want it becomes then a um like a um a purely athetic criteria okay so now we want to oversimplify this and I will I will take uh let's say the most important degrees of this scale so I will I will start with the six degrees or E minor and then we go to uh C Major G major and uh uh D major okay this sequence [Music] this is a sequence that has been used a lot over uh for you know playing different songs for composing and writing different songs one the first song that comes in my mind that uses this uh cor progression is zombie back Baris okay so um let's say that we want to improvise over a very uh easy uh song like this one you know just four chord songs all the way around and uh we have to try to make this four chord sound interesting okay so um we don't want to sound too much cliche of course and we don't want to sound too much you know scales up and down so this is a real challenge especially for guitar players so we need to know what to do and uh it's not about the um the the core sequence per se because uh lot of you know for for a lot of time especially if it I come from jazz music so I know perfectly that there is something like the you know something like a mindset that the more the more chords you're going to play the more you cool right but it's not even about the number of the chords that you have it's how you interpret those chords so you can even have just one chord but you can be incredibly creative on it so it's not about the number of chords so now on purpose I decided to choose a very uh easy chord progression like super super cliche okay and we'll try to make it a little bit interesting and I will drive you through it to explain you step by step what to do to be uh exactly on the key and sound interesting and sound actually melodic because we this is one we what we want to to have okay at some point we know the scales we know all the all the uh different um you know uh all the different um uh yeah scales and Cordes etc etc um all the melodic devices let's say and then we have to know how to apply them so let's get the discussion now and I can talk about it for hours really and uh let's go straight to the exercise I will make a loop out of those four chords three [Music] 4 okay very simple and easy G major and D okay this is not properly like the zombie progression like at the beginning of the video but um you know it gives you an idea already so what we have to do first we have to um have correctly in our mind what is the map of the fretboard so whenever we hire in a key we have to decide which is the map okay whenever I talk about the map I mean that we have to have clear what are the possibilities that we have in specifically I start always from um the you know I personally start from the the AR pages but I think it's easier as an approach to start from The Pentatonics okay so let's say that we are in G major we have um this G chord for every uh G chord that can that can play over the neck I can have a different um position of the pentatonic okay so this links um directly to the Caged system if you don't know what it is please uh go and search for it there are plenty of videos on YouTube that will explain you exactly what it is I will make maybe make a video out of it uh but for now it's you know uh in short what what I mean is that we have different five different five different places for playing G major okay we have G Major G Major G Major G major and G major here which is exactly like this one okay but just on the on the octave okay so for every position of G major that I have here I can have a um different uh you know a position of the pentatonic this helps me already to have the beginning of the map okay so I have the pentatonics pentatonics are already like the first um let's say um you know the first U possibility as a guitar player that you have to have your map laid down okay so for this position of the of the G Major scale of the G pentatonic I have for this position I will have this position of the pentatonic for this one I'll have another position here for this position I will have another [Music] pentatonic so for each position of the pentatonics I always sign which is the root we have to be able to um uh understand where the root is located because this is actually everything for us so we have G Okay g g where G is located as we are in G major of course [Music] so okay so whenever we have the G and we have the entire course laid down um we have basically the the the root of um of the the entire key and uh pay attention to to it because it doesn't really matter if I'm going to play with this pentatonic um uh with all those pentatonics over all the entire chords over all the entire four chords progression doesn't really matter we are still in G major we are still in the scale harmonization it doesn't matter which kind of chords of the scale I'm going to play those five positions will sound always in okay this is the most easy Principle as an improviser as a guitar player especially this is easier for us as guitarists okay so um what we have to do first we have to try to play play The Pentatonics um all together okay so the exercise that I would suggest is to play them together and to um you know to have them clear in your [Music] mind okay so as a rule of time I will try to uh now play those same sequence those same pentatonics over the four chords goes like this [Music] [Applause] [Music] okay okay so as you can see everything works okay this is the basics um uh so this is like the your your foundation let's say um so if you come from Guitar from rock and blues guitar ponics can kind of be your uh your foundation okay the more Jets oriented approach maybe will tell you that foundations are the pages and I agree with that but also as a starting point consider The Pentatonics as your main base to boild everything up over it as a consequence okay so the second step is the knowledge of the major scale whenever we talk about major scale um we um mean that we have all the seven notes of the G Major scale in this case okay and for this major scale I can have um seven different modes okay um I won't go in details what mode means right now I will explain you maybe later in another video if you want so write down in the comments please make a video about modes please okay and so I would be happy to to make it for you um but but uh you have to know what does it mean to play uh the different modes okay so there are different schools about that I prefer personally the TR not for Strings modes my personal choice because I use leg out a lot uh but generally there are two uh Visions there are the molds like vertical barly uh fingerings and there are the three knots for Strings I personally prefer the three kns for Strings again personal choice but um what what's important is that you learn all the seventh of them okay so I can stress more about it so you have to learn and um understand all the all the modes and where are where they are located possibly in all the different keys but now we go on G major so we have y okay during mode freen mode [Music] lean mode mixan mode iolan mode and low mode and now we can also play it here basically okay so as you can see we have all the time three not for Strings and the magic of it um together with The Pentatonics is that we can play with them as much as we want and uh it's fantastic it's going to sound always inside [Music] okay so very easy so the exercise I will suggest to is to learn the modes first and to play them in all the different areas okay more or less like this [Music] [Applause] so to oversimplify of course I uh just played all the modes as sanding but of course there are tons and tons of exercises okay so uh be REM mind that you can uh do lots of different patterns with it the more you do the more you're going to become um you know free and aware of the position in which you are on the act so it's very very easy but it requires a lot of work so be prepared to have tons of patience if you are in this process of the learning phase okay so nothing else to say this is just hard work and I know I perfectly know what do it means me like many other guitar players so um good luck with it it's a lot of work um so uh what we can do now is to play both the The Pentatonics and the major scales over those four chords [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] okay I can go on forever like for all the entire afternoon playing with it um okay so now we have the entire map and as you can see all the notes that I played okay even if I just play randomly casually even though thinking about it there will be always inside the key right because it's so it's just there we have all the the chords the most important chords of the key let's say one you know six four uh one and fifth okay um and uh and then we we have all the notes of of the scale okay there there is nothing difficult there but the real question then is what I can do musically with it okay because if I just play the scales up and down it's going to be very boring what what I'm going to do with it okay so the answer is that go deeper and try to understand where each note is located this is actually the step forward you should be able to understand um you know the harmonic meaning of each note but okay this is just you know something linked to the language in practice what I need you to do and to uh an exercise to you know to start to play as most melodically as more inside as possible is to um uh try to focus all uh the uh the root of course to to understand the root where the root of this Gord is located and then the third okay so you can you can repeat everything with the fifth and and the seventh if you want um if you come from Jazz you you have been told of course that uh the third and the seventh are the guide tones okay so they properly Define uh the the quality of the cord Okay the third and and the seventh but um the seventh sometimes is when you play Just child can be a little bit um I will say o over the top in term of sound uh it becomes too much Jazzy okay so we want to focus more on the root because it we uh we need to know where the root is and we need to focus on the third the third especially sounds very melodic and defines where each cord is the perfect approach to do this is to visualize the uh root over each string okay so um for each string we have uh basically to different locations okay so for example we are on G chord okay on G major um we have to try to focus on the Note G okay we start just from the first string okay so we have we have the G here volume please we have the G here and we have the G here okay so then we go on the second string where is the g and then we go on the third string where is the g and if you have 24 fret will be here now I'm just using the natural harmonic and then if we are on the fourth string the G is here and is here and then if I am on the fifth string the G is here and here nobody really plays there all right who plays there nobody and then if we are on on the sixth string G is here okay what about the third okay we have um which is the third of G the G chord is B okay so natural B is located here and here on the first string and then B is located here and actually here on the on the on the second string on the third is located here and here and on the uh fourth uh is located here and here on the fifth oh my guitar needs some adjustments I just refret it right now yeah so and then uh we have the um the the B here on the fifth string and is octave and another B here and another B here okay so we have the G chord and we have the location of the um the you know the the root and the third so we repeat the same also for the other chords we do the same for the chord um E minor so for E minor the root will be e okay so where we we have let's go fast okay we have the E here and here on the first string e e e and e e and uh the um the third will be n natural G so natural G [Music] again and okay so this is for um for the E and then we move to um C so in the case of C we have C here on the first string in octave and C so C is still the root right so [Music] see my guitar really needs some adjustments in octave right now and uh we need we are here and okay so um yeah then we move to the third in C which is the um is natural e so uh natural he on the first natural he natural he here and natural he and that's it so now we saw which are the um root and the third so the best exercise that you can do now is to play over the backing truck and try to focus over each each note uh compared to the chord okay so if you are on E minor you can uh you have to the exercise will be to play the root over each chord over each string okay it's a lot of work but let's try to do that for example I am here on let's try just to make it on the first string for now so I am on um uh on um on the first string and I play over each chord so I start from E C G and D okay so let's play the root over each chord [Music] okay what about if I play the third over each chord okay so for e I'm going to play uh um the G and then for um C I'm going to play the e B and then for um G I'm going to play the B and then F sharp for D let's [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] try Okay so the exercise will be to repeat the same idea or over all the entire set of strings okay so for example you repeat the same the same on the second third fourth etc etc and also um you can visualize U both um of the notes over two strings for example this can be another another exercise for you over uh three strings four strings etc etc so um there are a lot of potent there is a lot of potential in this because then you will know exactly how um to locate each note over the chord okay um so um a very uh practical exercise for it would be to um then also to to focus on the fifth on the seventh and each uh note of each chord okay so this will be um great and also if you then visualize the ninth the 11th and the 13th for each code is another incredible exercise so if you do that you will develop a lot of awareness of all the notes that you will have when whenever you are playing so guys it's all that I have for today please again don't forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel and uh we'll see you uh next week with another lesson please do your homeworks this is um you know maybe very kind of boring um exercise but it is incredibly useful so if you don't want to just sound like playing scales up and down all the time this is the excise that is tailored for you so uh again you do your homeworks and uh see you next week and again don't forget to subscribe my YouTube channel I I can't stress enough and yeah see you next time bye-bye [Music]
