i'm here next to my ginger patch and the smell alone is enough reason to grow ginger it smells so good believe it or not ginger is super easy to grow especially if you live in a hot climate in today's video i'll share all my best tips for growing ginger and i'll give you a few extra tips if you live in a cool climate and some different tips if you live in a warm climate stay tuned to the end and i'll give you a few bonus tips for growing turmeric if we haven't met before my name is angela from growing in the garden and i love to share garden inspiration and helpful tips so you can be successful growing your own garden the first thing to know about ginger is it needs a long growing season to grow well about 10 months is how long it takes to produce a nice harvest of ginger if you live somewhere where it's nice and warm that may not be a problem in cooler climates zone seven and below you're going to have to pre-sprout indoors i'll give you some tips on that in a minute ginger grows from rhizomes planted in the earth it sends out these bamboo like shoots while the rhizomes are developing below ground ginger is grown from rhizomes ginger that you plant underground you can order seed ginger or you can look for organic ginger at the grocery store or farmer's market look for light-colored thin skinned organic ginger that is plump and firm with several bumpy nodules those nodules are where the ginger is going to begin growing cut or break those rhizomes into two or three inch pieces and you want each of those pieces to have two or three nodules you want them to be nice and plump don't cut your pieces too small let those cuts heal and kind of dry over before you plant to keep them from rotting once your pieces are ready to plant plant them about two inches deep and about six to eight inches apart for square foot gardening plant four pieces per square if you live in a warm climate with a long growing season you can plant ginger directly in the garden when it begins to warm up in the spring and you should see sprouts begin to appear within a couple of weeks if you live in a cooler climate about 10 months before your first fall frost date count that back start your ginger inside by planting it in pots and pre-sprouting it put them two inches deep in small pots on heat mats keep warm and slightly moist but not too wet or it will rot once ginger sprouts let it grow in a sunny spot until it's warm enough to plant outside once the soil warms in the spring then it's time for you to plant gradually let plants become accustomed to outdoor conditions for a week or so and then transplant sprouts to larger containers outdoors or into your bed choose your warmest location especially if you live in a cool climate for planting ginger here in the low desert of arizona warmth is not a problem we have plenty of it in fact a little bit too much for ginger so here it's very important to give ginger plenty of shade although it likes warmth it does not like a lot of sunlight so look for an area that gets dappled sunlight for your ginger and it will be happiest here in the low desert i have to provide shade for ginger to grow well you really want to have good soil to plant your ginger in for the best results plant ginger in soil that is loose rich and well draining and that helps prevent the rhizomes from becoming waterlogged applying a thick layer of mulch such as straw or more compost can also provide nutrients help the soil retain water and keep the weeds down so let's talk about watering it's important to water your ginger well you don't want to let it dry out but at the same time ginger does not like to be soggy that's why well draining soil is so important allow that soil to dry out a little bit between waterings but give ginger regular water as it grows as temperatures begin to cool cut back on the watering ginger will need less water as temperatures cool luckily ginger is one of those crops that has very few pests or diseases if your soil is less than ideal or the ginger is not growing well you can feed ginger with organic fertilizer or some type of fish emulsion or seaweed emulsion every few weeks during the growing season while the ginger is growing you can also add an additional inch or two of compost as the sprouts form to heal up the ginger similar to growing potatoes to help that ginger grow and develop even more as the days get cooler and shorter ginger will begin to go dormant its growth will slow down and its leaves will begin to turn yellow here are a few tips for growing and harvesting ginger if you live in a warm climate you can harvest ginger all at once when the leaves begin to yellow and die back dig down and carefully harvest your [Music] rhizomes [Music] [Music] you can leave it in place cut way back on watering as the temperatures warm back up in the spring and the days get longer you'll see new sprouts forming if you do that you basically just dig up and harvest a little bit as you need it the great thing about living in a warm climate is you can dig down and harvest just what you need in cooler climates where freezing temperatures are an issue you'll want to harvest all of the ginger before those freezing temperatures come because freezing temperatures will damage the ginger ginger also grows really well in containers if you're going to grow ginger in a container look for a container that is at least 12 inches deep container grown ginger may dry out faster and need additional feeding than that in the ground keep an eye on those containers and don't let them dry out once temperatures are consistently below 50 degrees harvest your ginger if you're not quite ready to harvest it and you're growing it in a container bring it indoors provide supplemental lighting for indoor grown ginger the ideal indoor temperature for ginger is about 75 degrees once you've harvested your ginger there are a few different things you can do with it wash off your ginger and cut the shoots ginger leaves are often used in teas cut off any long roots [Music] there are a few different options for storing ginger ginger keeps for about a month in the refrigerator if you store it in a sealable plastic sack if you want to store ginger longer there are a few ways to do it peel and slice the ginger and dehydrate it and then when you're ready to use it grind those dehydrated chips into fresh ginger for the most intense flavor ginger stored that way will last about a year you can also just pop ginger in your freezer in a freezer bag and then peel and grate the frozen ginger as needed another really easy way to use ginger is to peel the ginger and then process it in your food processor add a little bit of water and then freeze that pulp in ice cube trays or herb trays defrost one of those individual portions as needed ginger can last for up to about a year when stored in the freezer now that you've learned how to grow ginger believe it or not you also know how to grow turmeric turmeric and ginger is growing planting harvesting and storing needs are almost identical ginger and turmeric are great companions and do really well planted next to each other the one thing to be aware of when you are planting turmeric is it can take a little bit longer to sprout than ginger if your ginger pops up but your turmeric hasn't sprouted yet that's okay just be patient and be aware that it might take a little bit longer for that turmeric to sprout also the turmeric can grow a little bit slower if you live in a warm growing season and can leave the turmeric in the ground for an extra year you'll have an extra good harvest of turmeric sometimes it can take two years for that turmeric to really grow and develop those are my best tips for growing ginger and turmeric hope you feel inspired to add some to your garden next season thank you so much for watching
