hello and welcome to another video of breaking bad english with me david in this video i would like to take you through the language cert speaking exam at the b1 level known as the achiever level and the question paper i'm using here can be accessed via the languagecert.org website now before you take the exam on the day of the exam make sure that you have spoken english before the exam talk to a friend to a colleague or to your teacher and make sure that you have warmed up your english speaking like you would warm up for a sport now speak steadily and speak not too fast quite slowly is acceptable don't take too long a pause when you're speaking try to keep the conversation going and try not to repeat the same words all the time for example big small or good or bad try to use varied vocabulary before you actually start speaking take some deep breaths slow your heart rate down calm down and just imagine that you are speaking to a friend not to an examiner so the exam goes something like this language cert international essel speaking achiever level the 10th of june 2022 youssef khan exam begins hello my name is david crofts can you spell your family name for me please and you say hello good morning my family name is spelt k h a n and i say thank you where are you from and you say i am from karachi which is the largest city in pakistan okay so that's the introduction make sure you get some words out at the beginning so you've already started the process of speaking english in a nice calm way and make sure you practice that introduction as well now part one i'm going to ask you some questions about yourself the first topic is watching films what types of films do you like best now think about the question what type of films do you like best can you rephrase it in your answer yes you can so you can say the types of films i enjoy the most are action and adventure films i particularly like films which have a hero or a heroine and they are set in an exciting environment where the hero has to solve a big problem a world problem perhaps i enjoy getting involved in the film and waiting to see what the ending is like that's the type of film i enjoy okay end of answer the next topic languages why do you think so many people learn english and you say well in my opinion the reason why so many people learn english is because english is an international language these days it is necessary to speak english in your job in your perhaps hobbies it's necessary necessary to speak english when you travel it is very very useful i also heard that people who can speak english usually find better jobs and earn more money so that's why i think it's important to speak english end of answer okay um the next topic is health and fitness how often do you take physical exercise now now let's say for example you don't understand what the word physical means you need to say something like what do you mean by physical and the interlocutor would say well the type of exercise where you have to do things like move or run or jump in the air something you do with your body as opposed to mental exercise where you write and think so now you would understand what physical means and now you're able to answer the question and you say something like well in fact i'm not a very sporty person so i don't do very much exercise but usually i walk to and from school and it is about three kilometers to school and three kilometers back so my exercise is six kilometers of walking each day which i think is probably enough okay so that brings you to a satisfactory answer to the question you don't have to be a sportsman but you can answer whichever way you want but try to use your own life as an example in your answer things you know in the first part there will be between three and five questions it depends how long the answers are the first part of the exam is actually set at a couple of minutes three minutes in fact now then we go on to the next part part two we're going to role play some situations and i want you to start or respond the first situation i'm a teacher visiting your school i start could you tell me where i can find the director's office please and now you have to think quickly you say something like yes certainly sir um i can take you to it if you want is that okay and i say oh that would be very helpful and i could say something like uh are you a student in this school and you might say oh yes i've been a student here for five years and i know the school very well uh are you the new teacher and i say yes actually i am the new teacher maybe i'll be teaching you next year and you say oh that would be marvelous i'm really looking forward to it end of conversation we've achieved it okay now second situation i'm a waiter in a cafe you are not happy with the food i've given you you start so again you've got to think carefully you are a customer in a restaurant i'm the waiter you are not happy with the food you've been given okay i've given you the food you're not happy with it so you need to stop i think you say excuse me waiter and i come over imagine i say yes yes how can i help you sir you say um this meat i ordered my steak well done but unfortunately it's not very well cooked at all do you think you could um put it back into the oven for a couple of minutes and i say oh i'm terribly sorry sir i must have made a mistake with your order yes certainly i will immediately put it back into the oven oven and uh as well as apology um would you like a glass of orange juice while you're waiting and you say oh that would be marvelous but um i would prefer apple juice have you got any apple juice and i said yes of course sir no problem at all okay end of conversation again so you speak just as much as the interlocutor speaks so we probably have an equal number of turns in the conversation but you demonstrate your ability to have a conversation you have to imagine you're really in that situation and you're almost playing the part of an actor that's what you're doing right so that part takes three minutes again they could ask you more than two situations it could be three it could be four it depends how long the conversation goes on for now in part three in this part uh of the test we're going to discuss something together all right and you say yes our class is presenting a project called communicating in the 21st century so now the interlocutor hands over a piece of paper to you and this is an example of it now on the piece of paper it's got six pictures and at the middle of the pictures there is a box which says communicating in the 21st century and the interlocutor will say let's ask and answer questions to help us decide which types of communication will still be popular in 50 years from now i will start okay so in this situation the interlocutor starts the conversation so i say something like so we need to discuss communicating in the 21st century and which things we think will still be popular 50 years from now do you think that birthday cards and anniversary cards and things like that will still be popular 50 years from now and you say oh no i don't really think they will be popular because 50 years from now everybody will be using technology and the way of sending cards will be for example using the internet and things like that and i will say yes i agree with you definitely and then you look at another picture and you say do you think people will still be using mobile phones 50 years from now and i say well that's an interesting question i'm not 100 sure but i think they will what do you think and you say yeah i think they will be using mobile phones but i think the mobile phones will be very different 50 years from now they will be perhaps even 3d phones or they will have much faster internet connection and you will be able to transfer and exchange much more and different types of information on them okay so we've got to keep discussing discussing we will try to get through all six points in the discussion but remember we've only got three minutes and when we've discussed them all you should say so what have we decided which ones do you think we will still be using in 50 years from now and you say for example we agreed that people will still be using some type of mobile phone and people will still be communicating face to face and people will still use the internet okay but we don't think people will use for example birthday cards anymore or ordinary letters things like that okay so that brings you to the end of part three so keep it light keep it airy try to keep the conversation going imagine you're discussing it with a friend that's the best way don't speak too fast but feel free to say you agree with the interlocutor or you disagree if you disagree give a reason why you disagree with the interlocutor that's perfectly okay it's a discussion after all there are no wrong or right answers everything is okay we are speaking english they are testing your english your ability to communicate then we come on to the last part of the exam part four part four is a total of three minutes in part four you are going to talk about something for one and a half minutes and your topic is your favorite holiday place so then the interlocutor gives you a piece of paper you now have 30 seconds to write some notes to help you so your topic is your favorite holiday place now on your piece of paper think quickly write for example your favorite holiday place you might write dubai and say why dubai is your favorite holiday place lots of things to do accommodation great weather good prices um interesting culture fantastic food so you write that down quickly on your piece of paper and then you start speaking and you say so i would like to talk about my favorite holiday place my favorite holiday place is in fact dubai and i have been to dubai three or four times the reason it is my favorite holiday place is because of the varied culture there you can meet people from all over the world from the far east to the middle east to the west you can meet and enjoy conversations with everybody what's more there are lots of things to do in dubai you can swim in the sea you can do sport you can go to the cinema there's lots of music to listen to and the food is fantastic you can sample food from all over the world from spicy food to european food to fast food you can taste it all the food is magnificent and what else um you can do uh things like go to the theater and listen to arabic music um these things are very popular you can go sightseeing and one of my favorite things is seeing different types of buildings and the buildings in dubai are out of this world i mean they have something called uh burj khalifa which is the tallest building in the world or wars anyway and it's a marvelous place to see and to go up and and enjoy the view over dubai in my opinion it is definitely my favorite holiday place finished okay finished so there might be some follow-up questions for example the interlocutor might say to you what would it be like to live in dubai all the time and you would say well i'm not sure i would like to live in dubai all the time because in the summer it gets extremely hot uh temperatures of perhaps up to 50 degrees celsius and i don't think that's very pleasant but i certainly love visiting it as a holiday destination thank you very much and the interlocutor will then say thank you and he will repeat your name so thank you yousef khan that is the end of the exam and it's finished you've done it you've achieved it now okay don't think about the exam anymore leave the exam room go and have a cup of tea go and have a meal chat to your friends don't talk about the exam you've done it if you follow my instructions you will be successful try to use a varied range of vocabulary listen to the tense of the questions you're given if a question is in the past tense for example where did you go last year on holiday say i didn't go anywhere or i went to sri lanka i don't know the answer to you to the question for you but make sure you follow the tense of the question that's important try not to repeat the same words all the time you can use big once or maybe twice but then say large or gigantic or massive use something different okay show the examiners that you have a wide vocabulary speak relatively slowly it's not a race not at all stay calm keep it friendly smile as you're speaking because you sound better when you smile it's a proven fact and you will pass the exam now if you have any questions please feel free to write to me below this video and i will be very happy to answer them but i wish you lots of luck in your exams in the future and lots of success keep watching my videos and don't forget to recommend them to your friends so goodbye
