[Music] hey everybody and welcome back to my channel i'm joey young and today i'm going to be showing you step-by-step how to paint red riding hood and the wolf um this is on a 16 by 20 canvas i primed it once with acrylic gesso and let dry and now i'm ready to begin i'm going to be using acrylic slate gray paint to cover the whole canvas with this is going to be the base of the painting and the under painting and in no specific way i'm just going to cover the entire canvas the next color i'm going to be using is black so i'm going to pull a little bit across the top onto that wet gray paint and some across the bottom and just work it in blending it softly into the gray i'm gonna play around with the top a little bit with my brush strokes slightly flowy a little bit of criss-cross this is gonna give us a little bit of movement in the sky i'm going to add a little bit more right around here we're going to have a full moon so i want to have a little bit more depth going on in the sky to really make the bright moon stand out even more so you can see how adding the black onto the wet gray canvas gives you a beautiful blending you can play around with it as much as you want it just gives you a really dramatic sweepy look to your backgrounds okay i'm gonna add some down here in the distance maybe we've got a lake down here so i just a little bit more the black just turning my brush over placing my finger on top this gives me a little bit more control and i want to keep the horizon quite low so we get the feeling that the wolf is up high on a cliff looking down at red riding hood up on this side so that was a number 50 filbert now i'm going to use my number 30 filbert and i'm going to take a little bit of white i'm using titanium white because it's the brightest and it's a cool white but you can change it up with any white that you have or that you want to use i think i'm going to have my moon around here and it's going to be reflecting down here so i'm gonna pull across and then pull and sweep and then across and i'll do this a few times until i get that look that i want remember you want to keep that horizon low so if i accidentally bring it up too high i can just sort of push it right back down there and work out a little bit of this white and gray in my brush up into the lower areas of the right horizon here so i'm gonna take a little bit more white because the canvas is wet it might take a little bit to um achieve the brightness that we want what i like to do to create a reflection is just slide my brush side to side side to side and tight lines like this applying the paint just on the tip of my brush when i load it i kind of wiggle push and flatten just get a little bit of it on the tip like this and then we'll have a cliff starting to come up here i see a little bit of gray here so this is helping me know where to start my mid ground from so the background is the sky and the horizon down here foreground is going to be the wolf here and possibly some trees and bushes maybe a path and then right kind of in the middle here in between the foreground and the background we've got the mid-ground so this is going to be a cliff hillside and we'll we'll have a red riding hood kind of off in the distance probably either getting away from the wolf or maybe she doesn't know the wolf is watching her this is kind of a fun type of painting to do for the fall season and and halloween if you want more calm really calm looking uh water with a little bit of a blur blurry look to it this is how you would do it and i can change this i can go right back to those lines again when i want i just want to show you guys some other techniques for how to paint water i'm gonna start coming in with a shape of my moon and you can add the moon over top of dry paint or you can come in when it's still wet and i'll show you how you can push and move the paint around i'm using a filbert brush so see how the the paint is still wet and we get more of a natural looking glow to the moon this way i prefer doing it like this rather than waiting for it to dry this way i can it all depends on how big you want your moon to be and remember the wolf comes out on a full moon so that's why it's important to have a full moon not a crescent moon so again just pushing that paint around creating a nice round shape if you want to draw yours out or sketch yourself first that's fine you guys know by now if you've been watching me that i like to approach my paintings freehand and then i like to come around and create a little ring around the moon that soft hazy glow i want to start adding [Music] the cliff side here and i'm going to be using my dagger or angle brush here this is a number 12. if you don't have this one that's okay you can use a flat brush and you can also you can really use any brush that you want or have to just create the shape here helps the brush take the paint better and blend out of the brush onto the canvas a lot easier okay so right here we're going to start coming in with sort of a low-lying cliff maybe some rocks down here so just taking my brush using that kind of angle to my advantage just going to get a feel for it here and we know that it's going to come up here it gets higher and then lower right down here so i'll stumble around the paint in my brush here now the background this under painting is really starting to dry it's a little bit wet in some areas so that's why it's turning this dark gray which i like i like to have a few different tones going on we'll just pull a little path out here so just pulling lines that get a little bit wider and then you can change the direction by pulling over this way or going more towards the right i want to just add a little bit more water on my brush and to give this more of a nestled in forest feeling just gonna do my little pull and flick for an instant forest and trees and then of course they'll come over and add a few more in in-depth detailed trees i'll be using the filbert brush for that i'll show you guys some really great and simple techniques maybe we've got the cliff coming down there maybe there's a little bay right around the corner here but we can see the rock cliff side going down and i just i've got gray but i've also got some white here that i'm just going to mix in to make some gray i may as well use what i've got on my little palette there get a little bit of water on my brush and i'm just loosening up that gray that's already in the brush here and i'm gonna apply another layer just line it up pull and flick and then turn your brush so that you're just using the tip of it like this to add some tree trench i'm going to take a little bit of black i'm going to bring up some height right here and this is really going to make set the background back and create a little bit more perspective so really all i'm doing is just playing around with the corner of my brush the width of my brush creating little peaks little wisps half circles and then here i'm not totally sure what i'm going to do here yet maybe i'll bring this down a little bit lower i'll make a little bit more that dark gray color darker obviously than the background but lighter than the black and we could have some we will have some rocks here in the foreground i'm gonna pick up a little bit more black wiggle my brush get it nice and flat and keep those uh all the bristles and hairs together the angle brush or some people call it it's known as a dagger brush too is a wonderful brush for creating peaks mountains anything that has an edgy look to it so depending on what kind of rocks you're using or you're trying to paint this is a really great brush to use yes because a red riding hood is in the distance i've got to create a foreground here so i keep this mid ground so again the sky is background where red riding hood's going to be is mid ground the rocks here and the wolf will be in the foreground hope you guys are following along easily and if you have any questions be sure to leave them down below in the comment section below this video we could have a little bit more i don't know how much of this we're gonna see but just in case um this area is still showing by the time we add our wolf be kind of nice to have um some rocks some land in the background there helps to create a little bit more atmosphere so i'll mix up a little bit of white and make that darker gray color again now i'm making it lighter than the mid ground because this is far away and then this is probably going to be covered up but just to show you guys a little bit extra you could paint a reflection below just like that we could make this a beach little cove here with a beach or you could also add a reflection down below i'm just going to take a little bit of white i'm going to pull turn my brush this way and just wiggle right so if you want it to feel like there's just a little beach down there you could do that or just keep it how it was before just playing around like i said when i'm painting intuitively i get a lot of ideas and i like to try them out and know that if i don't like it i can cover it up or paint over it i don't seem scary to do that when you're just starting out but you should never ignore those ideas that come to you mid-painting process you should trust in those ideas and thoughts and try to see how you can deliver them onto the canvas okay now i'm going to wash this brush out and i'm going to show you how to paint some really simple trees using a filbert brush i'm going to use my number 16 filbert brush here again and i'm going to load it by pushing wiggling kind of fanning it out like that so i'll start with the biggest tree i'm just going to slightly follow up go over the existing tree trunk i made earlier and then push little tabs i like to leave a little line at the top now my brush is a little bit too dry so i just picked up a little bit more water and you don't need a lot of paint it looks a bit nicer especially when something's in the distance to have it a little bit watered down so some areas to make it look more natural you want to make your your branches a little bit thicker and denser so you don't want to be able to see the tree trunk all the way through i'm going to take a little bit of white make that gray color this is where you can decide if you want to have a little bit more of a frosty look maybe to your trees or you can even add snow it could be a winter scene if you wanted you can decide what season you want it to be in and i'll start my other tree here i'm just going to make these a little bit smaller and smaller helping create that perspective of course you can switch over to a smaller filbert brush for these smaller trees if you feel more comfortable i just use less pressure when i'm working on a smaller tree so just tiny little tabs and then these ones we're not really going to see too much because they're farther away and then to make this show up a little bit more i'm going to take some more white just a little bit of water to help work that out of my brush just a little tap tap tap leaving some spaces a lot of people think of the fan brush when working on trees and yes the fan brush can be quite effective i find it especially with teaching over the years it's a little bit tricky for beginners it's hard to control and it can tend to make your trees look messy now some of these rocks here we can add a little bit of gray too as well and i like to just turn my brush over like this and just change it up let's see how i'm kind of always changing the direction of my brush this will give you a much more natural look need a little bit more the paint here is quite wet still because these rocks are bigger here in the foreground you're gonna add larger brush strokes and again if we want to add a little bit more black you can go in and do that as well and i'm just lining my brush up with a little bit of that black and gray left in my brush just pull out a little bit like that okay so we can start painting our wolf now and i'm going to start with my gray so i'm just using that same gray that i used for the background i'll take a little bit of black so i'm not blending it on my palette i've got just a little bit of each here and i'm going to start with the shape now we knew that we were going to cover up some of this area here so i'm doing a lot of these little flicks and that's why it's important to have both those colors on your brush not blended because see how as i'm tapping this in a little tap here and there and a pull and a flick short little flicks i'm creating that for multi-tonal light and dark all at once so add a little bit more now a little bit more of the black this time i have an ear right about here so just an almond shape like that we'll worry about the highlights after so i do use my rape fan brush quite a bit for painting fur and hair in my tutorials and i've been showing you guys that brush so much lately that i thought i would show you a different way because i know a lot of you guys don't have that brush now we're coming up to the eye area say the eye is going to be right inside there but we'll add it after and then just swoop down slightly like this and then up and out for his nose we'll add a triangle right here come in with a little bit of black just like that and then down a little bit of a line here another triangle right there a bit of gray we'll add a little bit of weight thereafter i'm just going to tap a little bit in here little taps here just for his fur and his spots where his whiskers are but we're not going to even see any whiskers but we'll just see little dabs there we're just gonna bring our brush down here and just sweep on an angle like that and then his bottom lip and chin or jaw area comes out past the nose so the nose has got to be in more than the bottom part here okay guys so then down swoop pick up a little bit more gray down and swoop in i'm just going to scumble this area in now this area right here by his ear there's more fur here so let's just kind of make a light little pulls and flicks we'll have a darker area right here kind of looks like another triangle shape and if at any time you're feeling lost or frustrated just stop re-watch the part of the video pause and just take a take a deep breath get your bearings again and don't give up just keep trying it doesn't happen at once or overnight i've been painting for many many years so i'm a lot more comfortable with my steps and my uh brush strokes but i want you guys to know that it's normal for mid-stage mid-process it's called an ugly stage and where everything just looks wrong and so many people quit part way through and never want to try again because they don't understand that that's that's part of the process and it's normal when you get to that stage it means you're doing well and to keep going okay i'm gonna switch to a smaller filbert brush now now if i can see this on here yeah a hint of it in there it's a number four i can see and i'm going to use my black and we're going to just start coming in with a little bit more detail i know it's a bit darker right in his ear and i'm just going to do light little brush strokes and then see that just a little swoop and flick short little brush strokes on the outside of his ear and then there's a little bit of dark fur on the very top his eye will be kind of an almond shape and then a little line that goes out i'm gonna i'm just placing this little blob there for now that i'll detail a lot more after with a liner brush and then the area right in here his nostril a circle and then it gets a little bit narrow right there and kind of goes up and then we can't see the other nostril very much i just see a dark little half of a circle and then it's going to be gray for some highlights around his nose that'll make it stand out a little bit more this is a scary looking wolf so far i didn't mean for him to look so scary but the painting is got a mind of its own and i i mean it is getting close to halloween time so whether you like halloween or not whether you celebrate it or not i think everybody likes fairy tales and this is a classic so i think it's really fun to paint and there's a lot of technique to learn in painting this whether you enjoy the image or not and there's probably somebody i'm just going to tap lightly here with my finger just to soften this there's somebody in your that somebody that you know that would probably like this so you can gift these so i'll just add a little bit of gray i'm making that dark charcoaly color right now i'm gonna add some shadows here and this fur it's a little bit darker right there and then right in here a little bit more generous with the black if you guys uh want to learn more animal paintings and portraits check out my animals butterflies birds playlist i've got lots on there i paint just about everything i think the only thing i haven't really painted yet is still life but i'm i'm getting there it's coming and depending on when you're seeing this video if you're watching this a few years later from the original upload date then there's a good chance i've gotten some or i've got some still life okay i'm gonna take a little bit of my gray now still using this little brush and if you're not sure what brush to use if you don't have one like this you can use a round brush even a little flat brush it's all and how you use it so you can manipulate your paint your paint brushes around and then his lip and it curves up like that and add a little bit more black there right underneath and we've got some little dots for some more whiskers and a tap tap tap with the bottom of my brush here whoops can easily fix any little accident see i'd like to show you guys how to fix your mistakes because so many people tell me oh i wrecked it i accidentally did this or this so i have to throw it out and start over no no no no don't worry you guys you can fix all of your little uh accidents i'm gonna rinse this brush out and i'm gonna go into my white i don't want to have too too much paint on my brush and i'm going to rest and study my finger here on the canvas so that i can have some more control and i'm going to line it up and swoop down like that and then a little right there and then a little bit right and then in picking up some more white i'm going to start coming in with some brighter fur here barely touching the canvas i think i say that in every video but it's really important as part of knowing how to apply the brush strokes you've got to know how much pressure to use you can have the right brush the right color but if you're pressing too hard or too gently depending on what you're working on it's just not going to be it won't be right so you've got it it's very important you've got to know i go i don't know how many artists mention that in their tutorials but it's really important so i'm just doing the first little indication there of a tooth and i'm going to come right in here and start adding some highlights like i said i use a rake fan brush quite a bit in my videos i demonstrate how to achieve the fur and hair look uh using lots of different brushes because i know not everybody has the same brushes i'm using and i want you to know that 25 26 27 years ago whenever i started painting i had like maybe two brushes and i it didn't stop me i was determined because i loved to paint and create so i'm telling you guys don't make any excuses i don't mean to sound a little bit tough but it is an excuse if you think you can't paint something because you don't have the same color as me or the same brush you're totally wrong you definitely can and that's why i like to include different uh brushes in each of my videos and i've got a few videos on how to use brushes different brushes brush strokes and blending so i'm just following the shape here and just coming in with the brighter highlights now that's all i'm doing guys so just follow along i'm going to lighten this area up here a little bit now a little bit at a time it's not a race take your time and enjoy the process we're gonna go underneath and scoop up right under his eye see how his eye starts to take excuse me take more shape as we add the highlights so adding the lights and shadows really really brings out the features a lot more this is the stage i love when it really starts to pop out and i'll pop off the canvas a little bit more white here short little flicks you can practice your brush strokes ahead of time if you want i'm going to just graze over his nose i'll take a little bit of my darker gray and kind of just ease into that right highlight on the ridge of his nose and then scoop around around and then bring it up and over we're gonna have a little patch right here and then leave a skinny black line i brought that down a little bit low so i can fix that take my block and go up a little bit higher with it now i think that looks better i'm gonna outline the bottom of his lip there and again pushing very gently so it's like an ombre right dark from his lip and then it gets a little bit lighter down there we'll just add a little bit of that charcoal black mixture right there and then right back into my white let's add another layer it's like we're giving him some eyelashes right there i'm going to use a round brush now instead of a liner brush just for the size i'm working on this is more suitable this is i believe a number yeah it's a number two round brush and take my black and we're gonna add a little line out like that towards his nose a little arch and then one same but a little bit shorter and then i'm gonna go up oops need a little bit more paint on my brush i'll do circle like that and then just bring a little bit down right there now i'm going to take gray and i'm going to go inside and just push for a little circle just make a little circle in there however you can and maybe a little bit more white because i know it's going to dry darker so i want to make sure that it's going to be bright enough while i've got this white here i'm going to finish his tooth it's not terribly sharp on top i can only see one tooth there and then i'm gonna take a little bit of black on the tip of my brush and i'm gonna add a little pupil right there and i need to go over right under here and take some of this off now i can do this a few ways i can well i'm going to do it a few ways as you can see the first way i took some of the black paint off that is still wet and i'm able to do that and now i've got gray and it's okay so goes under that line down and then get up a little bit higher so there's just a very thin thin separation there i'm just going to bring this pupil over a little bit more there turned a bit gray so i'm gonna add a little dab of black because i outline a little bit thicker whoops okay now i can go around with a little bit of black and add some more details wherever i need to my shadow and contrast here we have that little dark patch right under his chin and then a little bit there see what i'm doing is just a scumble then white and i'm going to make this a little bit more outlined and bring a little bit of hair right out here make that come down a bit lower guys and then stumble scumble out some of that i've got to be careful where i rest my hand here or my finger right in here right on the other side of his face the moonlight's hitting that hair so i've got this little outline it's nice and bright from the glow of the moon and that's what's going to really make your painting pop off the canvas i love working on paintings have a lot of dramatic lighting in them i'm just going to do little tiny dabs like this just a little make it look a little bit furry bring the nose up a little bit higher there i think this wolf is just about done we can start working on riding hood um before just before we add red riding hood or start working on her i've got this uh filbert rake brush some people call it a greener brush so you can see there's little spaces in between there and i will show you some techniques for creating fur using this brush so just a little bit of white and water what this does is just give you multiple natural looking bits of fur all these little lines the trick is to have enough water in your brush as well so that it is really wispy and flows effortlessly i'm gonna take some gray with my white now because it's not this is the other side of the wolf where the moonlight's not hitting it but there's still some uh lighter tips to the fur kind of reminds me of uh painting the owl feathers that's another thing i really like painting our owls i've got three or four owl tutorials here on my channel and it's hair sweeps over spur sweeps over and then down here so the trick is to not make it solid that's why you want to don't apply too much pressure if you push too hard you're smooshing the brush flat and it's gonna not look 3d you're just going to have your brush stroke leave thick chunky patches that won't look right here i want that so i pressed a little bit harder so the one thing i forgot to do was add the little dabs there for where the whiskers would be but we're not gonna see the whiskers we're just gonna see the dots so i'm gonna take my round brush again with a little bit of black on the end and i'm gonna start just up here doing little lines that kind of go on an angle like that or a little little dots in lines if that makes sense you know what i mean and then there's some that come down here and they get a little bit smaller just having little flicks here just for some more fur so what i'm going to do is cover this uh mountain or the rock area that we have in the background because you know it's just competing too much with this wolf and it's confusing because it's sort of looking like it's part of the wolf so i'm going to do that right away because it keeps bugging me easy just match the sky color that light gray and then it's a bit darker here so i'm leaving it a little bit darker and then the edge of the fur here one more thing one more thing i want to do the breath cold breath it really helps to set a mood in this painting oh i'm so excited i love doing this oh there's a few different options i think i'll use my filbert brush this one's on number nine but you can use whatever brush that you want so the trick with painting fog or mist or breath is transparent right so what you need to do is add a little bit more water to your brush with only a little bit of white paint but it can't be dripping and too wet either otherwise it's going to disappear and potentially ruin the paint and just disrupt the paint underneath so let's just start from here i'm not looking at anything right now i'm just going to make this up i've got my brush turned over with my fingers like this and i'm just thinking about smoke coming out of a chimney puffy circles transparent right you don't want it to be too thick okay i'm going to do this technique again and i want it to feel exaggerated and kind of whimsical so i'm going to give it a little bit of a flow to it i'm going to switch over to my larger brush before this can set in to the canvas i don't want it to dry too quickly otherwise i can't work with it so you see how you can twist the brush around and work with it like that it's really cool to use a filbert brush like this for steam in a painting if you have a steaming cup of coffee or tea in a painting that you're working on or just smoke this is the brush for you this is going to make it effortless and give it that artsy look right all that flowy look okay i like that i'm gonna leave it maybe add a little bit a of bit maybe just a little bit more of a glow around this moon there it's all about creating that atmosphere in a painting and what better way than to have a soft hazy glowing moon always that's a bit more atmosphere now this is in the distance and it's dry now so we can add a little bit of a mist over this as well and it's foggy right that always helps to make a painting look a little bit more spooky so we can add this little scumbles here and there and now we can get started on red riding hood i'm really excited i love using red and especially with a background that's grayscale like this i've done a few of these lately um if you guys are enjoying these be sure to like the video and let me know and leave a comment below so we're not gonna see her face or her arms we're just gonna see a beautiful mysterious figure here in a red cloak and i'm gonna add her first and then uh have it set in with maybe some more rocks in the foreground around her so that it doesn't look like she's just floating there so i'm gonna use my smaller filbert brush and i'm gonna paint gray first and so at this point we have to decide what the right size is for her if she's in the distance right this is larger the wolf is here in the foreground so she's got to be much smaller than comparison in size so i am going to i think i'll add her running around this corner here i'll add the shape of her hood and it's going to start out as a half circle okay so her top of her head her shoulder is going to be right here and then it's kind of be a triangle and i know it looks like she's floating here right now right but that's when we've gotta change it up a little bit and add some rocks and and whatever else we need to have her set in there and make it all come together and make sense just make her head come up a little bit higher and you guys can use any red that you want for this painting whatever red that you prefer there's crimson there's cadmium there's scarlet foreign okay i think that is a good size so i'm gonna come in with a little bit of black now and my liner brush so i've got just a little liner brush here you can use any liner brush that you want and i'm just going to start working on adding the details here when i'm done that i'll dry it off and then just filter over in the red that i want to use so we're going to have some folds in her hood where the fabric is kind of twisting over and then it's going to be dark in between her back and shoulders where the hoodie is so you want to create that movement right it looks like she's moving and the fabric's kind of twisting and pulling with her movement there go back into my gray then i'll cut in between here i just wanted to make her dress a little bit bigger and more exaggerated here so remember as the paint starts to dry it's going to look a little bit darker so that's what i'm doing here is just readjusting my light and just altering the dimensions a little bit more so i'm going to come in and add some more rocks here oops [Music] add a little bit of gray and his breath is starting to set in a little bit so keep that in mind if you want to add a little bit more you can always add more i might later but i'm pretty excited about adding the red to her cape her cloak so i'm going to be using crimson red and i'm just going to make sure this is all dried off first while i'm waiting for that to dry just a little bit more i'm going to come underneath and reapply my highlights now that the paint has dried i can just add a little bit more here and i know it's going to dry a little bit darker even still so i'm not worried about this possibly looking too too bright okay because i'm using very minimal red paint i'm not even going to put it on my palette i'm just going to take a little bit like this don't need very much at all and i'm just going to go right over top of everything where i have the gray it'll dry lighter and where i have the black it'll dry into more of that dark velvety looking color dark it'll look like dark red velvet that's what i'm after foreign okay so i wasn't planning this but well i wasn't planning a whole lot of this i've been making it up like i said as i go along but the red i wasn't planning on using is my luminous neon red but for the light reflecting on part of her silhouette here in her hood i'm just going to use i'm just going to put it right in just take a little bit of this and use this for a highlight and this is gonna really make it pop and you guys can decide if you want to do this or not and these are uh holbein luminous so it just adds a little extra something it's a little bit more of my crimson red now for the final details here i'm going to take some of my titanium white and i'm going to stumble around i'm going to turn my brush over like this and create some because right now we've got a warm temperature of white on our moon because i'm just using the i didn't add white remember i just scumbled off um exposing the canvas underneath so now i've got a little bit of both i've got the the warm white from the canvas and the titanium white the cool white and i'll just redefine the eye here a little bit and as i wrap up this painting i want to thank you guys very much for joining me today this was really fun to be able to get to share this with you just needs a little bit just a little bit more like that starting to fade away isn't it [Music] okay so thanks so much for watching thanks for subscribing to my channel leaving a comment below i appreciate all of your support so much and i'm looking forward to seeing your versions of this up on our facebook group and on patreon so have a wonderful day everybody and i'll see you soon in my next video bye [Music] you
