[Music] [Applause] [Music] hey everyone welcome to watch it speed painter in this video once again we are going to be taking army painters brand new speed paint range for a spin and again i i just painted up that blood angel in the previous video and i thought we'll do the same with these plaque marines and see what we can achieve this is one i painted a few years ago using the contrast paint range by games workshop and i thought we'll see how close how much we can replicate this with the hopefully cheaper more affordable speed paint range so primarily the contrast version was done with this plague bearer flesh and i think he's come out well it's actually one of the best things i've possibly ever painted definitely one of the best contrast things i've ever painted in my opinion obviously super subjective so we're going to do this black marine using this malignant green which is army painters i think sort of similar color they look fairly similar to me i've not tried it out yet but what can go wrong in a live video so let's get to painting just before we crack on painting this malignant green i just wanted to point out and you can't see it anymore i should have filmed this before i've shaken this for maybe 10 20 even minutes it was super separated and it's the first time i've noticed that with speed paint there was a big line of yellow uh pigment whatever's inside this magic along the bottom and green at the top so i had to shake this and i honestly have been shaking it for ages it does now look fully mixed but anyone familiar with army painter knows you need to shake well and that evidently applies to these speed paints as well but i'll grab some of this and get to painting so to apply this green eye i'm going to be using my red grass games a size two that's the big brush they only do two sizes so it's the big one you're gonna want a fairly substantial brush because most of this marine is this malignant green i'm gonna go around all of his armor panels and just apply a reasonably generous coat i do find with these plant marines that it does go on and it works better like that's why i think this is one of my best contrast paint jobs it isn't super textured which is where these sorts of paints work best but it is sort of more lumpy and bumpy than just the normal space marines and i think these paints go on that a little bit better it doesn't pull as badly on the armor panels and that sort of thing but nevertheless i'm going to want to apply quite a smooth coat quite quickly so moving this around stopping it from pulling anywhere i'm also going to be dodging any of his tentacles and he's got skulls on him and i don't know various disgusting looking globules so i'll be dodging those as well the places where i want to paint on some of the gold armor it's not going to matter too much i'm going to be painting on some silver anyway i'm going to try and do those with speed paints as well once i've base coated them with silver but that silver paint is going to go over the top of this piece of cake no bother so we're not going to worry too much about that but yeah i'll make my way around this miniature so that's the green applied all over this miniature and i think that's coming out pretty baller it's a very very close match to that play error flash from citadel might not necessarily be the exact call you want to do your uh plague marines and they also have that camo green in the in the speed pane mega set so maybe that's a closer green to what you want but this is where i went and i really like how they came out so i'm really really happy that that's come out the same color for the next bit i'm going to use a little bit of army painters and gloss of varnish and i just want to varnish up these uh i don't even know they are these bones protruding from his shoulder and the reason if you've been watching the experimental videos we've been doing on the speed paints is because when it's gloss varnish the the speed paints mostly just run into the recesses so i'm hope i'm going to get a really high contrast on those and basically have very very dark shadowy recessed areas and a brighter almost white finish to the bone and it's going to save me a load of highlighting and make that look a little bit more like the reference work that i'm basing this miniature on as well as just hopefully ultra realistic we'll we'll find out as this paint slowly dries while the varnish is catching some rays and drying in the background we're gonna move on to painting up this tentacle well this tentacle these tentacles are sticking out all over the place just notice that i didn't drill out the barrel of this gun and it's making me die a little bit inside but i'm gonna carry on as though i have done it let's just pretend i didn't miss that barrel and you didn't see that here but i'm gonna use this purple alchemy to base coat or do an initial coat on all the tentacles all the little grubby little disgusting bits that are poking out of this marine and i'm gonna try and blend it up to purple the the hive dweller purple once this is dried but for now i think i'll just cover it all in this purple alchemy see how it comes out it looks like it's pink on the bottle i've never used it this is literally the first time i've seen it and slapping it on and hoping this is kind of how i want it to look by the end purple alchemy came out a whole lot darker than i meant maybe i should have tested that on something before applying it to a minute what can go wrong in a live video but luckily if you are here now you're seeing me up so you don't have to i was going for a more fleshy tone with the pink and just gonna blend that into a purple but it's come out like super vibrant pink which is fine you know it still looks grim as anything and certainly tentacle like just a little bit bit further away from what i was actually going for but my bad my mistake we are still going to use some of this hive dweller purple i'm going to blend that into a more purpley hand it just kind of looks like that the reference artwork although it's probably not gonna blend i'm probably just gonna end up with a purple hand and a pinkish arm but not to worry but also apply it to his groin cloth as well and just let you see what the purple alchemy and the hive dweller purple look like on the same miniature together so the glass of varnish on the bones on his shoulder should now be dry so i'm going to be using this flaccid boner color to paint those up as well as all the skulls that are around his body's got one on his shoulder some of his what is this thing i don't know what this is like a grenade maybe looks like a like world war two grenade something like that and he's got one on his little backpack with his school lunch in so we'll catch that in the bone color as well the bulk of his gun and some of this i'm going to keep calling it a grenade i hope it is is in this kind of darkish gray matte finish so i'm going to try and build up a couple of layers here i'm going to use cloud burst blue which is really dark blue in the speed paint range i'm going to just apply that to the i don't know what i i don't know enough about guns but basically the big central mass of his gun and the top and middle of his grenade i actually really like how that cloud burst blue has come out i'm a little hesitant to paint another layer on top but i'll i'll dwell on it for a little bit i'll procrastinate and as i do so i think we'll paint the rest of the miniature base in metallic so i am going to be using speed paints to try and achieve this metallic look so it's actually one of my favorite ways of painting metallics in the in the past few months and before that i enjoyed contrast of the metallics as well and brings it through so what i'm going to need to do is apply a base coat i essentially going to paint everywhere that i want to be metallic going forwards in a base layer of which would clay more blade which is army painted as a light silver so basically it's got shoulder pads the rest of his weapon his backpack's got loads of bits of detail that want to pop out in silver he's got various little bits of gold around his kneecaps and things like that i'm just going to go around the miniature and pick all of these out and just bring them back to silver which is why i was saying you could be messy at the beginning and it won't matter too much because applying this real pain on top of the speed pains they're just going to disappear and this is going to take very very well and then we'll finish it off with some coloring we'll dye this silver into various different forms of metallics so i've applied the silver normal paint all over the places and i want to add a metallic finish to just gonna spin it for a minute so you can take that all in just in case you are following this along as a tutorial because there's lots and lots of little tiny bits of silver to add and i've gone and done all the rivets on his armor silver as just depicted in the reference art on the box i'm going to start painting up the metallics using well i'm going to be going for some gold and to do that i'm going to be using army painters new speed paint this hardened leather it's actually a very kind of pale light brown color i think that's going to go really really well to give a sort of tarnished golden similar to the original contrast version i did i should note that out though when we compare this to the contrast version later i did paint that with real real gold with real gold paint like what's the term like normal paint as opposed to these speed paints or contrast paints is just a gold paint that i used and this is different this is now the way that my sort of go-to way of doing metallics because that claymore blade that light silver goes on so so easily one coat job done and then a quick splash of contrast or speed paint in this case over the top and i really like how these metallics look for next to no effort or time before gold the gold looks good painting it properly don't get me wrong in fact it looks better if you can put the time and effort in but it was two three four coats sometimes you needed to put a brown underneath to give it a good base to build up from that sort of thing i mean you if you've been painting before you're well aware of that problem whereas this one pretty happy with it and it's nice and quick so i'm gonna go around and pull out all of the bits of gold detail which are all of the edges of his armor a few bits on his sort of backpack as well he's got some dangly bits and some balls near his crotch that needs coloring in gold too and i'm gonna go for the magazine you can see sort of the bullets poking through and on the magazine of his gun he's also got this like wooden i don't know what you call that again second time in this video i am no gunsmith i do not know what these bits are called but the handly bit the bit he's holding with his little flipper that's also sort of wood he's got a sort of destroyed held together with some duct tape style gun i'm gonna paint that in the same color as well it won't have the metallic effect so you get to see how this hardened level would look as wood another lovely looking metallic speed paint color there i think that's come out about the gold i was looking for like a really tarnished really deep gold a load of that silver's still poking through it's even done a load of hedge hedge highlighting edge highlighting for me i'm not i mean i'm personally not going to add any more highlights but by all means you could go around and edge highlight up this gold and take it to the next level which really increases how much mileage you can get out of this sort of speed painting range i am going to be looking to conclude my speed painting job though because i want to just be a quick simple job i'm going to do no super highlighting afterwards so i'm going to move on to grave lord gray which is the the gray or the dark gray i think there's like that also that runic gray which is like a light blue gray and green black as well which i guess is is it the dark gray which is black but yeah this is this is their gray i'm going to use this for the remaining metallics going to paint up all of those and that's going to pop those out as like a silvery gray metallic you'll see by the end there's also these straps on his gun holding that piece of wood together i'll do that with the same gray essentially and you'll get to see the metallic version and the normal version right next to each other if you're interested in seeing that i'm going to also apply it to that cloud burst blue on this i'm going to keep calling the grenade i think it's a grenade and the the bulk of his gun the mass of it in the middle and that i'm going to apply that quite thin because i really want the blue to sort of poke through and make it look a little bit different to just i'm a bit worried it'll just go to sort of black with a dark blue and a gray on top so i'm going to apply it very thin there and bring that out but probably been applying this bin throughout all of this bit of the painting as well just because i want those silvers to pop through and with a quick basing off camera that is this plague marine completely finished now i'm gonna pop up the contrast version on the right hand side of the screen and this speed pane army painter one the the rival to contrast on the left and hopefully you can see that plague bearer flesh which is the contrast range and this new malignant green is pretty much a one-to-one match i think it's come out really really well and essentially it makes no difference which one you pick other than the speed paints are going to be that a little bit cheap you're going to save yourself a couple of dollars a quid whatever it is some amount is going to add up as you increase the number of paints you have in the range i think absolutely both marines look awesome they take this style of paint exceptionally well and look great but very little effort the speed paints have done well with the metallics i think painting that one one coat of that silver and then just slapping some speed paint over the top and those metallics come out looking different both metallic both beautiful really like how they're coming across the only real thing i don't love is that purple alchemy the color of the tentacle now there's nothing wrong with the color i think that color is actually really nice color as well it's just it wasn't what i was expecting and i should have tested it first i'm just more i'm kind of a subtle person i like subtleties so i like the more flesh-like version of the contrast but that's just the choice of paint and while i've been hating on this purple alchemy one of my friends has actually seen this miniature already and really really likes how this purple looks and thinks it's a great way of painting these tentacles and i'm pretty impressionable and i've started to warm to that so i think either option it you know it's personal preference it's subjective choose which one you would like but plenty of colors in both ranges to paint all those tentacles but overall i'm very very happy with the speed paint version of this miniature guys thank you ever so much for watching let us know below if you've got any other good ideas for what miniatures to paint up and compare the two with we're open to all suggestions thank you all ever so much for watching and i'll see you again soon [Music] talking as though i've got anything interesting to do with this varnish but i'm literally just sticking varnish on it uh whoops a doodle this is dark bones in his shoulder should now be dry so i'm gonna start applying this flaccid boner colour which is a bone that's the speed pump purpose groin cloth i think that is not what you call that one to one match i think it looked absolutely got my finger in the video especially the malignant green by the speed paint range and that plague bear affair flesh by the contract coming out of this accurate this this consistent this this listen to the the only real bit that's let me down is the purple that what was it called son of a [Music] you
