[Music] hi everybody each is a Lorena here from our place dossier in today's video lesson we're going to cover off what you're gonna do if you don't have any burnt umber now this one set is a really really easy one it's gonna be a short video it's an easy one because basically when I make up my burnt umber I tell people you want to make it up just use two parts Brit Sienna to one part ultramarine blue colors that are already in your palette so I've got my paints here and what I've got is I've got deco art traditions all terrine blue the deco art media fluid acrylics burnt sienna titanium white burnt umber now the red light halo blue and hence a yellow light why do I have these if it's so easy to do these well because I'm out of the deck or traditions burnt sienna this one's almost dried out why don't we use a the primary colors to make it up let's see what happens so I already put out the actual burnt umber blend it up with white and now I'm gonna take ultramarine blue and add it to the burnt sienna and it's this is quite dry a little bit of water to that and you're not going to get a 100% match but it's going to be close and this formula here two parts burnt sienna one part ultramarine blue to make something close to burnt umber reverse it two parts ultramarine blue to one part burnt sienna and get something like Payne's gray so I'm gonna put this here this is drying it out and add white to see the true underlying color well yeah we got it there we go so easy peasy one thing I would like to try to experiment because what happened to be - burnt sienna and say hello blue I have no idea I have no idea let's we don't need any more of that so that's okay so let's take our burnt sienna and let's take a speck of phthalo blue I already know that that's the tail Oh blue you got to be so careful because it's so powerful is so dry okay that's a bit more and I'm gonna try to do this with using the primary colors because I am out of burnt sienna and once this I think I've got about this much left now and once that's gone I'm stuck so let's see what we have here will this give us a close match - that's so dry actually it's not bad it's not bad at all it's not bad at all it's a bit more more neutral it's a bit more neutral add some white now this is close - that's close to that as well so that's they can that's even closer to raw umber so yeah so that can be done so that can be done and we'll take this put that there oh that's too much water now there we go it's a very very very dark dark brown there we go so with all the trouble I'm having with burnt sienna can we make this using just the primary colors yeah you can which primary colors you may ask well we can use you can try it with ultramarine blue we can try it with a little blue and I'm gonna pick a blue only because I've already made Brit sienna using phthalo blue naphthol red and yellow so why don't we go with that I'm gonna get a fresh brush and let's see burnt sienna mom think it's gonna be more red and but I would say equal parts of naphtha red light and hence a yellow then to that specky Doodle Dandy with the fatal blue and you're going to go and adjust from there so bit more blue and do the phthalo blue and such small increments and to refer to the video where I actually make up the phthalo blue or the burnt sienna so refer to that never judge the color based on the offense you're mixing on the unstick Matt that's too orange that's get a bit more blue in there so this is an alternative if you were to run out of burnt sienna okay so let's take that and let's yeah so that's with the white there may be a bit bit more on the red side but let's see what we get so to that I'm gonna add so so we made the burnt umber with my preferred mixes two parts per at sienna one part ultramarine blue you could also make it with Britain and phthalo blue so we could technically cut this in half and then do this part here so this will be in our new burst Hannah by adding altering blue then we take this part here and just add more Thea lobe Lew let's see what happens because I already have this color in my brush let's add a bit more phthalo blue oh no way no way I was a little too quick on the draw there mixing that up - quick on the draw mixing that up trust me just easier just having burnt sienna oh it's just so much easier having that I'm actually gonna mix these two up because I'm gonna need it anyways okay so we're making up burnt sienna red more red yellow then add your say a little blue okay so we got that all right so now again let's put that in half now they see if I can do this quickly enough so I'm gonna add a bit more blue and now what I'm trying to do is make up the burnt umber and white to see the true underlying color and yeah yeah it's pretty close it's a bit red it's a bit red so could utilize that bit more yellow not to neutralize it to lighten it a little bit so it's not so red and a speck more phthalo blue too much too much let's Aussie not back so that's that one let's see so that's my so that's the burnt sienna and fresh brush oh my that is that's the new burnt umber so that's also using that's using this plus the little blue now then take a fresh brush we're gonna take this and add ultramarine blue and we're running out of paint I don't know if I'll be able to make a proper chart with this it's too dark it's too dark hi Dwight yes hmm oh okay that's makeup more page oh my god oh my god and you know what if you run out of paint this it's a really good exercise for you to practice making up your colors so first thing we're doing is we're making up our burnt sienna so if your mix is too much red okay if you add blue is gonna make more purple then what you do to that you add yellow to neutralize that blue so now I'm basically taking this mix which is my quick and easy to parts burnt sienna one parallel to marine blue except I didn't have burnt sienna so I made up for it Sienna by using phthalo blue that's all red light and hence a yellow light and now I'm adding ultramarine blue to that and what do we get what do we get white we have a mixture that's a little too red so little too red gonna matter a bit more yellow to that and that's better that's better and I needs a bit more phthalo blue the ultramarine blue is blue that leads towards violet so of course it's gonna be a bit more red white there we go here we are got it so there we go so does take a lot of work eh to to make up your colors if you're out so okay let me clean this out so with that being said de l'eau burnt umber is a very inexpensive pigment to have do I use it a lot I make it up myself to be if I wanna be completely honest I'm making it myself using burnt sienna and ultramarine blue I'm not gonna lie to you would I save the money and mix up my own burnt sienna using the primaries what I just basically get you know you mix up my primaries to get burnt sienna and burnt umber and raw umber and you know and rusty and all that stuff probably not I know what to do if I run out of paint but would I do that probably not because the earth-tone pigments they're one of the least expensive so it's easier having them not having them in your arsenal and you know they're great to turn other stuff down there comes to a point where you have to put a value on your time to say well you know just to make a burnt umber you know Bert Sienna an Austrian blue that's quick and easy takes me nothing to do that but when using that the the primaries your paint is gonna be a lot more cohesive when you're using the same colors all the time to create your full spectrum palette but it's the time and for me it's not worth going through this exercise just for burnt umber I would prefer doing it this way but doing this exercise I now know what to do if I run out of burnt umber and to push it even further I didn't go shopping what to do if I ran out of burnt umber and I didn't have burnt sienna I can make the whole thing by using the primary colors alright so your homework is going to be taking your burnt umber I'm pretty sure you have that and if you don't well make it up so you're gonna take your two parts Brit Sienna one part ultramarine blue what if you have either one of these then go to your primary palette say hello blue not for red light head to yellow light what happens if you don't have these well you got some work to do take the paint's that you have so you're gonna take a blue that leans a bit more towards the green you're gonna take our red that leans a bit more towards the orange and you're gonna take a yellow that leans a bit more towards the green and you're going to make up your burnt umber from scratch if you're not sure what I mean about a color leaning towards something you need to go way way back to the to the actual video specifically for the blues the Reds and the yellows because in those I explained colors every color only leans two ways these towards the color on the left and the color on the right so they low blue will only lean towards green or yellow that's all red light will only lean towards orange or violet and hence a yellow light yellow will only lean towards green or orange so wave so go back to those videos before you even attempt this if you don't have burnt umber burnt sienna or ultramarine blue if you're gonna do it from scratch you've got to check those videos out first so you fully understand what I'm talking about okay so take pictures of your charts make your notes and please post them in the private Facebook group so everybody else can bounce you can bounce ideas off each other maybe you'll come up with a mix that's totally amazing so we'll be able to share also on your charts please post the write down the brand of what you're using because we already know from the limited palette course that just because somebody says it's burnt umber they looked a little different because each manufacturer processes the pigment differently so make sure you write the brand write the pigment number if it's on your if it's on your paint tube and also the opacity so post that in the private Facebook group and if you have any questions related to the specific lesson please post them it below the video I read and comment on every single question and and end please share any of your thoughts of to making this and you know if you found some shortcuts or sort of tips and tricks on your mixtures please share that as well alrighty time to clean up and get ready for Mike's next lessons so until I see you in that video stay inspired [Music] you
