When i learned how well the jews and early christians had scripture memorized i felt somewhat compelled to atleast try to memorize some.

I figured id start memorizing the words of tbe messiah. Rote memorizing is somewhat hard.

I tried looking up strategies actors use to memorize linesa little bit - they may have some good strategies.

I just started. I memorize Psalm 46 first and then 1 Corinthians 13 and then the beatitudes (last two.passages were easy because they were already pretty close in my mind). I absolutely love it. I recite those verses throughout the day and have found it hugely beneficial. I'm definitely going to keep on going.

I believe with all of my heart that God's word has the power to change your life I'm gonna give you five easy tools that will help you memorize Scripture today [Music] [Music] hey my name is Denise and I'm a part of the branch together team because I believe that Scripture has the power to transform lives my day job is working for a global ministry called one Hope whose mission is to provide God's Word to every child in every generation around the world we do this because we believe in the Bible's power to affect destiny I've dedicated my life busbar to helping people engage with Scripture and I'd love the opportunity to cheer you on towards life transformation through Bible memorization so why do we even want to memorize Scripture why is it so important in psalm 119:11 the psalmist writes I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you scripture memorization is important for a number of reasons it is the truth that is essential to combat the lies that we are bombarded with and believe all of the time it's like a sword that penetrates into the deepest part of who we are to bring us to repentance and to make us more like Jesus it's a company by the Spirit of the Living God to bring healing and comfort joy and peace scripture has a power to transform your life and scripture memory makes our thoughts clearer it also helps to study our emotions proverbs says that as a man thinks so he is did you know that depression and anxiety are linked with negative thoughts but joy and contentment are actually linked with intentional and positive thoughts your thoughts have the ability to determine your behavior and who you are and sew up your thoughts are centered around the word and the truth found in the word you can become more in line with who God created you to be so before we go into the memorization I need to mention that it's absolutely critical that you understand the context around each verse for instance if I memorize a verse like Philippians 4:13 which is I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me and I have no idea what the verse actually means it does no good the Apostle Paul in this passage is talking about how to live content with contentment in every season of life it doesn't mean that if I want to be an Olympic athlete I can even though I have no training or no athletic ability just because God strengthens me so understanding the meaning let's the verse sink deep into our hearts rather than just reciting the words like a parrot or a robot without understanding the meaning we need to interpret scripture in the light of its original intent and the best way to do that is through Scripture itself we have another video that actually teaches you how to study Scripture and to understand what you're reading we'll have a link to that video in the description below okay it's time for our five techniques to memorize the first is the easiest and the best for those who are visual learners just keep it in front of you just go grab some note cards or small pieces of paper and write the verses out then you can stick these verses on these note cards in places that you'll see them every day like your mirror or your refrigerator your computer monitor at work you can even put it in your dashboard or you make it your lock screen on your phone you can also carry around a card with you and read it instead of scrolling when you're standing in the checkout line make sure that when you read them though you're actually reading them don't just let it become something that your eyes gloss over every time you see it to help you get started with this you can visit our Instagram account for a handful of handwritten scripture verses that we have made to help you with your memorization next listen to it this is best if you're an aural learner just record yourself saying in a bunch of times in a voice memo and play it back while you're driving or taking the dog for a walk brushing your teeth or even cleaning start saying it with yourself as you're listening to it and eventually you'll have it memorized if you're more of a kinesthetic learner you can act it out this is also a fun way to include others especially kids in your memorization makeup hand motions to go along with each word or phrase then perform those hand motions as you recite the verse over and over again number four use music you can write a song or rhythm to help you memorize now you can either start with an existing tune that you're familiar with like happy birthday or mary had a little lamb' twinkle twinkle little star or even your favorite hymn or if you have some musical ability you can make up your own song if you're feeling really ambitious you can even put hand motions to your song to help you deepen your scripture engagement we do a daily Bible reading on this channel and as we went through the book of Galatians we posted a song that we wrote to help everyone memorize Galatians 2:20 the link to that song is below in the description now the last technique is one that I use most often I'll call it the first letter technique instead of writing the whole verse right out just the first letter of each word of the verse over and over again the key is that you can speak way faster than you can write so by writing only the first letter you're able to write the verse almost as fast as you can say it this activates two senses and the first letter acts as a memory trigger to help you learn the verse eventually you don't have to write those letters anymore and you're able to recite the verse by memory this video is part of a channel called branch together where we read the Bible together chapter by chapter during each weekday with each book we choose the most important verses explain what they mean and then help you memorize them if you want to read with us just text together to 21000 or hit the subscribe button below every one of our daily videos closes with a scripture that we are trying to memorize also will be doing more Bible memory videos so subscribe and hit the bell to stay notified I hope that these five tools will help you as you memorize the word let us know which one is your favorite and how you're using them in the hello join us on our journey this year to read the entire New Testament together and deepen your scripture engagement through memorizing with us [Music]
