getting your bike out of sight is the best way to keep it secure but not everybody's lucky enough to have a garage so in this video we're going to look at how to make your shed as secure as possible [Music] insurance brokers bennett's included will always ask if your bike is garaged but from now on if you're insured with bennett's all locked shipping containers metal sheds and wooden sheds on a concrete base as long as they're on your property are classed as garaged now a shipping container arguably is the most secure place you can keep your bike they don't tend to look that attractive in your garden a metal shed like the asgard for instance which bennett's rewards members can save 10 on check out the link in the description that's a really good way to secure your bike because it's really hard to get into it makes a lot of noise attacking it [Applause] but you might already have a wooden shed or you might be looking for something you know a slightly slightly more attractive look of a wooden shed to fit into your garden setting which is why we're looking at wooden sheds today but if you're buying any motorcycle storage always have a look for the secured by design logo that's the official police security initiative now while a wooden shed particular light of duty one could be easier to attack if you may be pushing the windows and cut through with a handsaw might make it easy to get into you've got to remember that we're talking about a basic level of security even a garage can be easy to break into if it hasn't got any additional security it can be easy to peel open the doors through the bottom corners so if you've got a garage you're lucky enough to have a garage i suggest using extra bolts on there particularly ones that aren't easy to be seen from the roadside fortunately with a bit of planning and a bit of investment you can make your bike as secure as possible here's how now it pays to consider how a thief might think don't assume they're all stupid because a lot of them are very good at their jobs and they can be very observant so don't advertise you've got a bike be that through wall plaque stickers on your car or even old bike kit boxes in the rubbish think about what could be seen as somebody's passing by that makes them think might be a bike in there low fences and hedges can make for easy access to your garden be it from the path or from enabling property but on the other hand it helps to be overlooked by your neighbours sometimes it's another of eyes seeing what's going on and tall fences and hedges can conceal a thief give them the opportunity to spend more time so just think about how your guns laid out and where you're going to put things don't let your guard down these can target bikes uh fairly unusual times five or six o'clock in the afternoon when people are getting home from work they're tired they may be leaving the bike outside where they go in and get a cuppa or they're not locking things up properly when you get home lock the bike away ladders bins and low roofs all make it easier to gain access to the property to move between properties so just think about what you're leaving lying around don't leave tools lying around either a spade can be used to prise off hinges on sheds and obviously i don't need to tell you that it's not a good idea to leave an angle grinder inside your shed with your bike nobody likes riding on gravel but it does make a lot of noise which thieves hate criminals can be wary of dogs so even if you don't have one don't be afraid of leaving a big dog ball or some big old tough dog toys lying around the garden ideally put your shed somewhere where it can't be seen but you do want the route to and from the shed to be in clear view so ideally behind locked gate but for anybody to get anything out of it or to get to it you want that overlooked and people be able to see what's going on if there are windows in the shed don't let it be obvious that there's a bike inside consider putting some blinds up for instance just to just to shield the view it might make people curious about what's in there but the less they know about what's going on inside about what security there is about what bike there is about what's inside there the more risk there is in them attacking it if they don't know there's something of value in there they don't know for certain is it worth them attacking it to get in there and potentially risk getting caught obviously the heavier duty of the shed the less likely it is to be broken into but to be considered a garage it does need to have a concrete base underneath it now i didn't have use a wooden floor on my shed at all i opted instead to have the shed bolted straight down to the base the point is the base has got to be solid enough to prevent entry underneath and in that way depending where your shed is you might want to consider not having any windows at all just think about what advantages a thief might have if they got in that way and how they can maybe get the doors open it might be worth considering fitting some solid bars inside the windows just to prevent access or at least to reduce the chance of access that way it's no good having a really solid door that's locked really securely from the outside if they can get in easily from through a window for instance and then kick it open from the inside so do think about how you lock it i removed the harassment staple that came with my shed because it made it really easy to grab hold of the lock and yank it open to try and attack the door i also think that those locks can get really hard to use as the door drops over time and as it swells and contracts during the year so i added some extra shoot bolts to the inside of the door and this key lock is really convenient making it a lot easier to open and close it uh but do think about whether it could be attacked from inside this has got security bolts in it but you do need to think about if they're inside can they then rip it off or or again force it open now a heavy duty horseman staple like this one pragmatist with its with its fixings hidden that's a great way of securing your bike inside of shed it's really hard to attack especially when it's used with a closed shackle lock like this you can see up the sides the shackle is protected makes it really hard to attack a combination like this make sure that the fixings on your door securely are up to the tusk simple screws can be easily pried out or even undone so make sure you're using at least some coach bolts in there and pragmatist sells this beef up kit which is basically some coach box that can push through washers on the back it just gives you that extra security to help prevent somebody pricing those hinges or locks off of your shed doors again bennett's rewards members can save 10 on pragmatism security 20 on squire 10 on asgard sheds there's loads more security discounts on there and loads of other kit and we're updating that list regularly so do check in and because you know if you're if you're thinking about building a new shed or you want to add some security check out the discounts there first now if a thief has managed to get inside your shed make sure it's as hard as possible for them to get the bike out because i haven't got a wooden floor in this shed it made it a lot easier to fit the ground anchors now i've fitted a pair of pragmatist torque anchors here they're the new mega and the new maxi but i really want to point out this is not a sponsored video i bought both of these using my bennett's rewards discount because i'm bennett's customer as well and while i was ordering them i asked if they'd lend me some kit to use for example i've tested pragmatist kit i've tested loads of other stuff so do check out the reviews pragmatists were kind enough to give me some more tips in this thanks to their involvement with secure by design but again no sponsorship in this video anyway i could have used concrete in-ground anchors while i was building this space from scratch which would have made sense except i didn't really know where the bikes were going to go if i had i could have used a really popular y anchor or the brand new pragmatist sub major they're both really solid bits of kit and they don't represent a trip hazard so they're concealed well you can also get other uh concrete in-ground anchors like this one from squire but for me it made sense to use bolt-in ones obviously there's loads of options for bolting ground acres there's this oxford one for instance there's this really simple one from melenco right up to this big one with a big old loop on it loads of choices out there whatever security you buy make sure you look for the sold secure rating on it you can get motorcycle gold motorcycle diamond diamond is the highest rating you can also get motor scooter and bicycle you want to be looking for the motorcycle ratings really unless you're looking for something really lightweight diamond approval includes angle grinder attacks now when you're looking at ground anchors there's also ground anchor diamond you'll find ground lakers with motorcycle diamond ratings the ground anchor diamond rating is a slightly higher level with a more intense angle going to attack to it once you've chosen your ground like a spend some time working out where you're going to put it you don't want to screw it in and then find you can't get your bike to it or your chain's not long enough to reach through it i chose these mega and maxi torques because they're quite low profile they're quite compact but both of them will take a 22 mm chain they're also pretty easy to fit and you can get expanding bolts for them like most ground likers probably the most common form of fitting is used in expanding bolts but just be aware if you're putting them into a concrete slab like this don't get too close to the edge because i can blow the sides of the concrete out i'm using resin fixings here and i'll take you through how i did it now the anchors come with your choice of either a standard or an sds drill bit and if you know you can reliably drill a 95 millimeter deep hole the cartridges are well easy to use just draw the holes for the anchor make sure they're thoroughly clean with a supplied brush and the blower tube and don't breathe back through the tube when you're blowing all you then do is place the glass cartridges into the hole and drill the bolts down into them you use the hammer drill setting on there twist and hammer and it just mixes the resin together knock the ball bearings into the bolt heads then fit the washers and the caps and that's it the resin sets in about 10 minutes and the anchor's ready to be used in a couple of hours though leaving overnight is your best bet really that's what i did before i started using them if you've got any voids in the concrete or the bottom of the holes drop into sand for instance the injection cartridge might be better for you again drill the holes out and clean them but this time inject the resin using the app care either way the anchors are really solid personally i prefer using the cartridges i just found that little bit easier but in one i had gone through the base so it made sense to use the injector on that one now if you rent your property you might have problems convincing the owner to let you fit a ground anchor which is where this comes in the double doofer it's a removable ground anchor now i know that sounds about as much used as a chocolate teapot but the way this is designed is very clever these screws hold these plates down which you might think we'll just take those off but they're just spacer plates once you've got a chain in there you cannot get this apart without trying to cut it and it's never going to be easier to cut this than any chain you can't get 22 mil through this one but this thing is rock solid once it's down and the great thing is if you do move house or if you do need to move it you can undo the four expanding bolts take take the anchor out and you just left for four holes which you can easily fill in okay so what if you can't fit a ground anchor at all to your shed this is pragmatist's shed shackle it's not as secure as a really solid ground anchor pragmatist doesn't sell it as as a full alternative to a big solid ground anchor but because it's so long it stops the thief being able to easily cut through the wood and just take it away it bolts all the way through the shed ideally place it near a window between the windows it'll make more noise when they're trying to get it off then the the best way they're going to attack this really even with this lower piece it stops and being able to twist it off they're going to have to cut it and that's going to take time and a lot of noise so if you've got no other way of fixing a chain into your shed use something like that it's great if you can't even use that still use a chain still use a disclock as well it's everything to slow them down getting the bike out chain it to something if you can if you've got more than one bike chain together just makes it harder for them to get it as always the more security you use the harder it is for the attack the more likely they are to give up or just to fail use the heaviest channeling lock you can afford but do make sure it will fit your ground length because not all of them will take 22 mil chains if you are using a heavy duty chain lock at home you're probably not going to be able to carry that around with you so you might want to consider one that its lock is a disc lock there's loads of options available again check out the reviews destruction test reviews in the link obviously if you can afford it have some really really heavy duty security at home and have something lighter weight to take with you when you're out and about if you can connect your shed to your house alarm if you've got one if you can't do that get yourself a shed alarm there's a fair few choices for alarms but you know get one and make sure it's difficult to reach for the thief what you don't want to be able to get in is start making noise and then uh silence it fairly quickly obviously an alarm won't stop everybody but the more noise you can make the more hassle it is for them the more off putting it is a bike alarm is going to put them off as well it's just another thing making some noise and if you're buying a brand new bike make sure you check out the mcia secured scheme now it's a five star scheme that rates bikes based on how much security has been fitted as standard by the manufacturer so definitely take that consideration when you're looking at your short list of bikes go for a five-star bike if you can because that's going to have more security built in as standard if you've got a decent wi-fi signal going to your shed consider a security camera like this blink which records any movement and sends it direct to a secure server getting a shed with no flaw means you don't have to worry about the floor rotting out but it does mean your base has got to be really accurate you've got to bear in mind that the the base of the shed drops onto it and then the outside of the shed the cladding goes over the edge so that's why it's got to be pretty spot on i put a damp proof membrane under this slab but i also use flash banding along the edges it just keeps the wood off of the concrete it just gives me that extra little bit of peace of mind that you're not going to get as much damp coming up there insulating the walls is going to give you a more regular temperature in the shed i insulated all of these before i paneled it but i didn't insulate the roof because you need an air gap in there and there wasn't enough room to get the insulation and keep an air gap so i just paneled it still going to lose some heat through there but it's certainly better than it would be that insulation is also going to help prevent damp from building up through rapid changes in temperature and if you're feeling flush you could also consider specifying double glazed windows consider an oil filled radiator as well just put it on a low setting just to keep it ticking over in the winter to help prevent any frost problems doesn't have to be on high at all it'll just come on just if the temperature drops too much and if you've insulated it fairly well it's only going to need to come on a little bit carpet's going to keep your bike's tyres off the cold slab in the winter ideally you keep the the wheels off the ground altogether if the bike's being stored but i tend to use my bikes through the year so you know i keep them on the mat just keeps that a little bit nicer build some ventilation in if you can i've got these closing vents either end the idea being especially in summer i can get some air moving through here a shed can get pretty warm and it's just not so comfortable to work in in the summer i ideally get some electric into your shed i brought it in under the base up into the consumer unit it helps me run uh maintenance charges and obviously use tools in here if i want there are solar charges available as well for maintenance but yeah i prefer having some electric in here fit a smoke alarm that you can hear from the house now realistically if this did go up it's probably going to be too late by the time you hear it you get down here but it's a bit of peace of mind fire extinguisher as well and make it accessible think about where you might be you want to be able to get to it any time i fitted it so that i can get the door open and get the fire extinguisher straight away finally stop worrying the internet's full of horror stories and it seems that social media they love clips of sparks and misery bike theft has been dropping over the last three years and we've proven through research into the data shown by bennett's uh customers and and theft claims that even using a disk lock can reduce the chance of your bike been stolen by a factor of three and in fact using heavy duty security like some of the stuff we're looking at here that can make your bike less likely to be stolen than a car so please do check out the reviews of the security kit i've done in the description because that'll make your choices that much easier but then buy the best you can afford use it and then just get on with enjoying riding a [Music] motorcycle [Music] [Music] don't breathe back in through the tube you
