[Music] hi everyone now we're setting ourselves a challenge this week we're going to attempt to make soap from ingredients only from the garden like it was 1700 and basically what I'm holding here you wouldn't believe it but these are the basic ingredients to make soap this go on so here comes the science behind it all when you burn wood it produces potassium hydroxide at that to the duck fat boom you get so now the potassium hydroxide when you learn you mix that with the water and all that to get that out that produces something called a liar the liar is an alkaline and then you add that to the fact now this is my first attempt at soap making so anything can happen hey I haven't got a clue whoever it's going to come out good or bad but we'll see oh that's what now we need to get water they didn't have fluoridated chlorinated water Punk to their houses no to the water well this well probably dates back 300 years we got chemical-free malaria from the Wow alright and we have very good reach good dump - and we have yeah the second right so we're gonna give it a good stir twice a day for four days right now it's been four days and we're gonna - yourself to the poem and we're gonna pour the water in there to get with the lumps out yeah we're gonna strain it through this cloth and I'll quickly show you inside the bucket what it looks like so that's all been done Oh Dean there we go now this has to be boiled and reduced so we get a stronger solution do you know I've got a little cut on my hand and I can already feel it stinging so it's probably a good idea in there to wear gloves and and all that while still in with this because this is a bit caustic yeah so we've got the fire lit using wood from the garden 1700 remember we've gone back in time now this has to reduce and become a stronger solution and they say that if you put an egg in there once this it's reduced enough the egg should flow so we're put one in at the beginning and see what happens see that now yeah it sinks so we've got to reduce this now until their egg floats and then that tells us that the light is strong enough we will open the windows we don't want all the fumes in the house got all the doors open and all that because we don't want to be breathing this in and we are going out in the garden anyway and we're planting veg well this reduces yeah we'll be back so this has been reducing it's took hours it's been on there for about four hours reduced him in there meantime he's at a shower it smells quite nice so we're gonna do the egg float test in there now look at that it's a floater it's a float up yes that is a proper float at James you're familiar with him and yeah now this is animal fat or duck fat that I've saved we do use a duck fat to roast potatoes in sometimes but I've saved this and I've specifically saved it over a year so we can do this experiment this video has been a long time in the making really I've been wanting to do it for ages so yeah there's the fat we're gonna render that down and I'm going to run it through muzzling to get look the dirty bit set no of course it's non-vegan soda I appreciate you if you don't throw red paint up against me ass daddy vegans now we're down at the hive and you're probably wondering why I've got me based so on and here well honey apparently if you add that to soap it just makes it smell nice but also makes it lover up more so we're gonna open up this hive and get some honey out but also we're doing our annual check and we've just built another hive which is over there and we are trying to say if they've produced another queen and all that and then we can put it into that hive and have two beehives right so we're gonna get one of these racks out the something capped off with honey we have the duck fat we have honey and beeswax and we have some dried lavender from last year and raise me flowers from this year all of the ingredients from the garden only now the ratios to this is two cups of fat so 3/4 of a cup of lye and then this that's not the ratio so we're going to see how many cups we can get into the pan from here and then we're going to add the lye to it on the stove so yeah we've put the faith and it was exactly three cups and that was all the fact that we had so we've done our maths and he's bloody blew our brains to trying to work it all there that we need to now add one did I say [Applause] one cup of lie along with one eighth of a cup of a lie or Mouse hello oh hello there is that maths morticians an ominous oh yes it is great yeah yes I did have extreme difficulty even just like typing in the numbers to make this call yeah ah that's fantastic I'm thick enough to join yes thank you very much it's lies got a funny smell it's almost like that was crushed between like sweaty socks and sorbets bent dog smell now we literally just keep stirring it until something happens called SATA fication what a lovely word in it certification the solution will just start getting thicker actually the site's getting thicker already we've only just added it nice no now we've we've got a cake mixing it until you you get like at Rice which is well we'll show you what rice looks like when we get there I said anything could happen II we stirred and stirred and bloody stirred and our arms ached and then I felt like I was gonna fall off so we've got the electric blamed around I know it's not 1700 [Applause] it's getting thicker though slowly but at this point I think we're gonna add the honeycomb in along with the honey and we're gonna people mix him the second I added the honey cone and started mixing look we're nearly there we're nearly at a trace now this is what you call a trice once you get that I think it's now time to add the lavender and the rosemary petals it's a lovely color Wow look at that so that's ready we're going to pour it into a Mount of sort of put a bit of greaseproof paper in there hopefully it'll come out in one pace now we've got to leave this in a cool place to set or to dry I have no idea how many days that it's gonna take so far it's already taken one week to get this far now it's big just over a week and we met the soap in the garden trying to dry off to make it go odd no matter what we do we cannot make it go up but I'm I'm not gonna allow this to be a foul so I have got more wax from the Beehive quite a bit of it and we're gonna add that to it and that should get it to say spill some on the carpet include some protest so there we go plenty of beeswax added to help it to set more because beeswax is meant to make soap a little bit harder still using all products from the garden but no look at it now it's looking more like a blinking chocolate sponge in it so here we have the finished product at long last this this has been real world work it has been making that we're gonna get that out somewhat we learn what we learn James no with we've learn the basics of soap but we've we've also learned that leave this sort of thing to idiots like me so use a lot at home don't have to do it now this tip this out it still it it's still not under percent sort of set it's a soft soap but when you make soap with potassium hydroxide you normally use that to make a liquid soap you know we use that to make a liquid soap and iced I say never work with children or animals I've got bloody bows I've got animals in the garden and children here there's no IVs there for me I think it's helpful work around right hey sis some kinda stinks let's get this car into bars place it's very soft to get a hard soap you normally use sodium hydroxide yeah it's a soggy soap but you know what that's that's as good as it's gonna get now give you ain't gonna believe this as he 1700 there is no there's no but you call it licked us paper when you test the pH of stuff so they say that you have to do a sap test on the internet and the sap taste what we're doing is when we testing to see whether the soaps still a bit caustic or not and the sap taste is this now I'm a qualified idiot so children do not do this at home and you don't ever do this yeah now if you get a tingling on your tongue as if you've licked a battery it means it's a bit cold stick it yes it's a tiny tiny bit cough stick so basically we should not really use this on our skin as such so it looks like the end product won't go to waste but we will use it for laundry liquid for washing clothes with because coarse thick soap is perfect for that let's just take it over to the sink and we will do a little worm test to see where every lover up on I will put a little bit on my hands very quickly so we've got a little blobby and this see if we can get a lava up actions this is that tiny NIT Big Sur lava it wants the lover up cause definitely cleaning thought I he's actually cleaning lovely so that's it making so clunky seven eight hundred to be honest old Baba hello is that NHS Direct one one one oh hello there I've seem to have had a little bit of an accident with some homemade soap yes it seems to be quite cool stick yeah yeah it's not as luxurious lessness less as meets closer cousin the Imperial of the liver yes yeah does seem to have taken some skin off of my hands yeah and as always thanks for watching thanks for subscribing take care and up see you real soon [Music] you [Music]
