hi friends so on today's video I am going to walk you through one of your most asked questions recently and that is how to make royal icing flowers so I have made a few cookies recently with royal icing flowers on them and I have mentioned before that it is pretty hard for me to Pipe royal icing flowers directly on to my cookies because they all require different consistency in order for your flower to actually take shape so on today's video I'm going to walk you through a few different types of flowers that we can make with one or two different Wilton tips or tips that you can find at your local craft store so let's get started here are the materials that we will need for our project we are going to need two wilton piping bags and two couplers Wilton tips number three and number 102 a flower nail and also a few pieces of either parchment paper or wax paper and we will need royal icing in two colors one for the petals and one for the Centers of our flowers before we start making our royal icing flowers we have to make sure that the consistency of our royal icing is very stiff and as you can see here the way to test that is to take a little bit of your royal icing bring it to the top and let the peaks come up into or from the icing and if the peaks do what they did here which is drooping back that means that your icing is too runny so the way to fix that is by adding a little bit of powdered sugar and we are going to go ahead and add powdered sugar and mix it into our royal icing until we get stiff peaks this is exactly the consistency that we are looking for so when you bring your spatula off the bowl your Peaks should stand straight up because this means that when we go to pipe our pedals they won't all become one big gloopy mess of royal icing before we move on I do want to give you a few quick tips and also the reason why we are using couplers with our Wilton piping bags is if for example you're making different types of flowers all in one day couplers allow you to easily change out the tips and also when putting in the icing into your bag and make sure to use a glass as a helper to make sure that you're able to put in the icing into the bag another quick tip for you is how to tie your bags when using royal icing my answer is very simple and I actually like to use I think they're called binder clips or office clips this is a question that I get asked a lot and this is exactly how I tie all of my royal icing bags the first thing you want to do is to go ahead and pipe a little bit of royal icing onto your flower nail to make sure that it holds your parchment paper in place to begin I'm also going to pipe a tiny dot of royal icing just use it as a guide but as you get more practice you probably won't need this now taking the bag that has tip 102 I'm going to place the thicker part of the tip down and then slowly rotate my nail as I go and I repeat that again the fatter part of tip 102 goes down and you're also doing it at a 45 degree angle not directly at a 90 degree angle and as you can see your flowers might not be perfect all the time mine looks a little bit wonky but you can always fix it by just simply piping a center into the middle of your flower let's look at it again another thing that I want to stress is that with this tip in this technique you can definitely make your petals as long or as wide as you want so you have full control with the hand that is piping and the hand that is holding the nail is what's helping you give the shape to the flower and to simply close our flower I'm just simply going to pipe a big dot with tip number three into the center this next flower that we are going to pipe is exactly the same as the first two flowers that we pipe the only thing that I'm doing different is that I'm making my petals slightly longer and at the end you are going to see that instead of adding one big Center I am going to go ahead and add three small dots and this makes your flower look different even though it has the same amount of petals as the first flowers that we did now for flower number three we are making it a little bit different so notice here that we are making it the size or the width of one petal but instead of going one straight way through I'm going up and immediately down and back up so I'm doing two small petals where in the first two flowers we did one I hope that makes sense if you get to the end and you can't pipe two more you can just cover it up by piping one small petal and there you have a totally different flower and I'm just going to go ahead and add a few small dots to differentiate it from the rest here's another quick look and remember that you're going up down up up down up and then you close it and you continue to close it until you complete the entire flower with this specific flower you can make the petals longer or shorter as long as you're going up down up up down up every time you do one petal well and there you have it we made three different flowers using the same two tips and using the same two colors for all flowers so definitely the possibilities are endless practice with it have fun don't make it too perfect
