cooking cabbage doesn't really smell that great but let me tell you something it sure does make a beautiful color hi this is margaret bird and welcome to color quest i'm so happy to have you here i hope that you've enjoyed the video so far and that today's tutorial on how to extract dye a beautiful gorgeous purple dye from red cabbage is so easy it's even considered i think for some as a gateway die meaning that it's so easily accessible and the color comes out so bright and vibrant you've probably already seen that gorgeous purple color that comes from the water after you cook red cabbage but it's this water yet another piece of waste water if you will if you're boiling your cabbage makes the most splendid purple dye it is considered fugitive so it will fade over time but the result that you get is so lovely and i've actually had pieces that have lasted for years it's always a sample in my art practice and what i love about it is it is a color shifter meaning that it is sensitive to the ph in your water so in the future we're going to take a look at that and see all the different colors you can actually get with red cabbage but today on color quest we're going to look for purple so let's head to the kitchen chop up some of this gorgeous purple cabbage and see what dies we can make from it and if you haven't already subscribed feel free to hit that subscribe button down below because every friday i release a new tutorial about the beautiful world of natural color i'm margaret bird this is color quest and thank you for being here i'm so excited to be rounding out the rainbow next stop today is purple [Music] so [Music] how about those purples that we got they definitely fall in the lavender spectrum lighter purples but actually i threw in some of that silk because the protein fiber of silk often will pull out even more color and i would say that that got a very deep and lovely purple hue so guess what we have finished our first journey across the rainbow here on color quest and here are the samples we touched on six different colors over the last six videos in the cooking color series so if you missed any of them you can go back and watch to see how we created this amazing rainbow of color all with natural materials and many things that you can find right in your kitchen so what's next i tell you what since we've already got cabbage cooking or just cooked cabbage to get purple i mentioned that cabbage is a color shifter and what i mean by that is that if you shift your ph in your water you can actually get several other colors so we'll talk about that in our next video thank you for being here if you know someone who also loves a little bit of natural color in their life send them our way it's always wonderful to have more people enjoying the magic of natural colors it's also a shape shifter no it's not a shape shifter it doesn't turn into a [Music] werewolf
