welcome back to the channel I've got a very exciting video today because I'm gonna be making one of my most requested projects to make on the channel a couple of years ago I had one of my biggest videos on the channel which was in laying a tabletop is where I made some edge banding and I inlaid it into a Celtic style pattern onto a tabletop and since that video I've been bombarded with comments like these and they're basically asking me to make more edge banding a lot of people seem to be interested in how to do it and in this video I'm gonna be doing just that so I hope you enjoyed this video give it a like if this is the type of content you want a lot of you seem to like the inlay work alright let's get on with the build [Music] [Music] this is a path ongoing for all the dark shapes you can see will be made out of poop and all the light funds will be made out of maple now I chose a maple because it has a very tight grain so when I sand this hopefully the red sawdust from the Purdue won't get embedded in the lighter wood screen because maple doesn't really have much open pores in it so it's gonna be a really nice white and red look now all these squares as you can see form the diamonds in the middle of the edge banding and they're the only square pieces you need to cut out all the rest are triangles so the triangles are perfectly half the square so if I measure the diagonals on the square it's 20 mil so I need the thickness of the triangles to be 10 so I'm going to mill them up at 10 and till the table on my bandsaw so then I can keep flipping the piece and cut some triangles so however that makes sense if he doesn't just continue watching [Music] okay so I just whipped the maple into three strips and I've also got a strip of the Duke but I gotta get these two exactly ten mil I don't want any chipper at all so I'm going to use my drum sander if you don't have a gum sander that's fine you can use your planer just make sure the Tifa sharp or just feed them through the area of the thing missing you least use so that area of the cutter knife will be at its sharpest if you know what I mean you don't want any chip out at all using some calipers each time they pass through I'll measure the thickness until I get to ten mil no yeah there we go alright so I talked to the table and I've also made this crosscut sled which is for 45-degree cuts and the one you saw me using earlier is this jig and that is just four ninety degree cuts now I've added a stop block on here so it's in the perfect position for cutting where's the piece for cutting the triangles at its exact thickness so if I line this up the peak of the triangle is exactly where the saw blade is cutting it's very simple to setup you just keep on adjusting the stop block until he's cutting in the right area and I've already done a test cut show you you can see that the triangle on this side is the exact thickness of the square and the same here so all the triangles on this edge banding are the same size so they're very simple to cut out now I'm just gonna make lots of cuts of maple and some of the Duke and keep cutting until I got enough it's repetitive but it's fun [Music] so I cut out all the triangle pieces so now I've got a load of maple triangles lots of duke triangles and I've got some the duke squares that's all the pieces you need for this edge banding I highly recommend setting up your bandsaw correctly if you're making edge banding I made a video on how to set up your bandsaw correctly if you want to check out that video I'll put a card until the screen out or a link in the description down below in that video I'll show you exactly how to get a straight cut we have no drift and no wonder and how that is caused and how you prevent it and the reason it's so critical to have your bandsaw set up correctly I like most other woodworkers don't like sanding so if I can minimize the amount of sanding I need to do after then that's gonna speed up this process considerably quite often when you're making enter banding and you're cutting out lots of pieces on each of the face you have to rub it on some sandpaper and get them perfectly flat but my parents are is cutting straight I'm not actually gonna sound the faces I think I'm gonna get a really tight bond just blowing the faces like they are at the moment what I'm gonna do though is sand the edges on some sandpaper all I need to do is actually one edge where the blade was cutting because the curve obviously kind of frayed the end so as you can see that edge there compared to the other edges is quite frayed so I'm just gonna sand that on some sandpaper because then all the pieces will meet very tightly and then you'll have no gaps in the edge banding so I'm gonna do that to all the pieces and then we're gonna get gluing up [Applause] so now it's time to blow up as you can see the pattern is sort of in three strips you've got a row of triangles on the top you've got a road triangles on the bottom and then you've got the diamonds and triangles in the middle so I'm going to glue them up in three strips and then once were the three strips are drive then I'll glue them all together so what I've got here is a road here of maple triangles with masking tape on the back and I've got a row of paducah triangles with masking tape on the back so I'm gonna glue all over this on every surface and then flip the / - over onto the maple and then put a board on top and clamp it down to the workbench the reason I'm doing three strips is this easier to figure out if you're doing it all in one go you'd be fighting against the the set time on the glue and stuff is more likely to slide around and it wouldn't be easy to line up so doing it slowly in stages will mean you get a tight join all the way along and all the pieces will line up with each other and look nice so let's get clear [Music] okay so forgot to mention grain positioning now make sure that the grain on all the Paducah squares are going in the same direction on the triangles it's not a big issue because on all the triangles the grain is going straight but as you can see with the Diamonds the grain is going diagonally so the grain could be going to the left or if I turn this piece it could be going to the right so I made sure that all these diamonds or squares whatever you want to call them the grain is going up to the left and that's very important because when you cut this edge banding into strips and you add a finish on it when the light bounces on this you'll notice if one square is off or in a different direction makes for the grain and all these pieces are going in the same direction now when I'm gluing this up I marked each piece with a pencil line as you can see on these pieces they all have a line on it with a pencil so then I know if they're all pointing to the left the grain is all going in the same direction [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] alright and that is the edge band incomplete as you can see all the joints are really tight and everything lines up and that's because we're good up in three stages in those three layers I love the color contrast between the per Duke and the maple with the red and white and this is going to be some awesome edge band if you're new to inlays this is basically a pattern block so you can make this in any size you want and you cut it into strips we the route out groove into a tabletop and you inlay it in or you can just glue on top of a box or a picture frame there's so many things you can do with this what I think I'm gonna do is two-thirds of it will be for picture frames it will be a forward of the pitch frame which I think will look quite nice and I think the other third will be borders around boxes so I hope you enjoyed this video I hope you learned something if you're new to the channel feel free to subscribe I do a lot of making videos and you'll be able to see what I turn this into if you enjoyed this video and you found it helpful please give it a like it really helps the channel out and makes the video get shown to more people if you go any questions or you just want to chat comment down below thank you for sticking to the end of the video and I'll see you in a couple of days for the next one
