hi everyone I'm Jen from Chronicles of a homesteader and welcome to my YouTube channel uh today I'm going to be going through how I whip up some Elderberry tincture um elderberries are if you guys don't know um they are a type of berry that grows on a tree um in little bunches they have very good immune boosting and antiviral properties so they're great for preventative for helping to fight are helping to prevent colds and flus the viruses and that kind of thing and they're also really good when you do get sick to take to help boost your immune system and try and fight off that cold or flu quicker so I love elderberries I have a few trees planted on my property just tiny little trees yet I'll probably get a little video clip and throw it in here actually so it's not my berries that I'm um actually using in this hopefully in another year or two a couple years I guess I'll be using my own berries fingers crossed um so I have dried elderberries and they're organic I actually got one from organic matters it's a Canadian company that I order a lot of stuff from really good quality so I have a nice bag of them um so I'm gonna use those and I'll go through what I'm gonna do to make this tincture all right so basically all you need it's very simple I don't know if everybody knows what tinctures are but basically it's they're like an extract um where you use alcohol not rubbing alcohol like an actual um alcoholic beverage I should say um drinking alcohol to 80 proof or higher to extract the good qualities from whatever it is you're you're making your tincture from you know you can use dried herbs different things depending on the herbal qualities that you're going for kind of thing so I'm doing a tincture with Elderberry so I'm going to use the alcohol to draw out the those antiviral any immune boosting properties from the elderberries um and then once I have that done um that's a process like it takes six to eight weeks but once I have that done then I can strain off my tincture into a nice Amber jar and it's good for years to use um so without further Ado let's get started so all we need basically is a mason jar I'm just going to do a small one right now and we need our dried elderberries you can use fresh as well it's just the quantities are a little bit different if you're using fresh I prefer to use dried because there's no moisture content in it and that can affect any kind of tincture or any kind of extraction that you're doing right um I'm also just using a basic Vodka it's 80 proof you can actually go a little bit higher proof with a dried Berry because the higher proof does help extract the proc the those medicinal properties that you're looking for helps extract it a little faster or not faster sorry a little better I guess but you'll you'll still get a great tincture with 80 proof body no problem oh all we're gonna do very simple so with dried berries um you're only going to fill your jar about a quarter to a third of the way full because those berries are going to expand and you want to leave room for expansion so it's gonna go to about a little tiny bit more I'm gonna go about a third just my preference some people even say a half but I think a half is probably a tiny bit too much but again it's just my preference so once you have your elderberries in there it's about a third full you're just gonna fill your jar completely full with your 80 proof for higher alcohol usually it's better to use a clear alcohol like a vodka or just a there's different preferences that people have but I prefer just a plain clear vodka so you're just going to fill it up to the top you can see it's already changing color it's already turning kind of a purpley color in there so then all I'm going to do is put my mason jar cover on it it's nice and tight and then just give it a shake it's just you know that pretty color like I said hopefully you can see this so what you're going to do if you have an Amber jar it's better to do this in Amber jars because you don't want the light getting added I don't have any amber jars right now that are free that I can do this in so I'm going to do it in here but I'm going to put it in one of my Cupboards in a nice dark spot so no light gets added and every couple of days you're just gonna go and you're going to give it a shake and you can open it up just to take a look at it but I mean if you shake it every couple of days it'll be fine you're going to leave it for about six to eight weeks and that's going to draw out all those great medicinal properties um after six to eight weeks what you're going to do is just strain it off through probably three or four layers of cheesecloth a few layers of cheesecloth um and a funnel and you're going to strain it into an Amber bottle now I don't have a large one here right now but I got some on order but this is what I talk but I'm what I mean by Amber bottles so this is just a little Amber dropper bottle this one will be too small for that but um this is what I'm going to put it in um so I will put some I guess loose recommendations for how much you can take um if you feel a cold or flu coming on or that kind of thing I'll put that down in the notes but uh just total disclaimer I guess in full disclosure here I'm not a clinical herbalist I am actually enrolled in an herbalist program right now but I'm by no means a clinical herbalist I'm no by no means an expert this is just um you know something I do and I feel is very beneficial so by all means if you are planning on making something like this and taking something like this do consult with somebody who's actually a clinical herbalist just to make sure it's safe for you to take and do your own research on any anything like this really um but yeah so that is my Elderberry tincture so I'm actually going to use these elderberries and I'm going to make a few more things but I'm not going to do that right now um I got a bunch of other things to do today but um I am going to do an Elderberry syrup as well and that's a really I really like this really yummy syrup you put a lot of like cinnamon and um Ginger and raw honey that kind of stuff in it it's really good and that's another way you can get Elderberry into you if you if you want to use it for those immune boosting properties all right so I hope you liked my video and I'm brand new to YouTube so feel free to subscribe uh like my video give me a thumbs up that kind of thing give me some feedback I will take all feedback hopefully not too harsh but please give me feedback I very much appreciate it and I am on Instagram uh Chronicles of a homesteader on Instagram so feel free to follow me over there I do share a lot over there as well so as promised I will take you out and show you my Elderberry trees so they're very small as you can see this is just a black one this is a Black Lace Elderberry so it is a black elderberry um Berry as well there are different types there's red elderberries and black elderberries and the black is what you're going to look for just to give you some different perspective of it so it's probably about a foot and a half high it's very small I just planted it this year so my other ones let's see they're very much overrun by weeds my bigger ones are actually the leaves are starting to fall off of it but here's one this is another black elderberry but it's um Ranch I believe is the uh the name on this one so he's you know pretty much dying off for the winter now but you know I'm not getting any berries off of these right now as you can see I'll be getting them in a few years time so I'm going to do some work around these before winter actually I'm going to try and get rid of some of the weeds around it and give it a fertilize and a mulch and then I'm going to cover it for the winter because we have pretty cold Winters here and I want to baby these guys
