hi this is Pavan Jesse with Blue Ridge honey company we wanted to share our homemade double screen board with you this morning we make these out of HDO plywood which stands for high-density overlay this really is about the best plywood on the planet for making bee lids with this particular one is five eighths of an inch that's what we make our double screen boards out of we use 3/4 for our standard migratory lids these are really slick for overwintering nooks over a strong colony we use them a lot for starting nukes in the spring start a brand new nuke and a beat box over a strong colony because it has a separate entrance all the older bees will go home and the heat rises through the screen from the colony below to keep the small cup nuke above warm it gives you a chance to introduce a queen we use eighth inch hardware cloth galvanized and t-50 staples quarter inch long to adhere these screens we make the strip's out of the same plywood the plywood's that good to cut the strips out of the same plywood and there are five eighths of an inch also of course inch and 1/8 staple with some tight bond glue we like them a lot Jesse's going to show you how we staple these screens on and there's the finished product all right looks good the reason for the double screen with space in between is so that when you make a nuke and you put it over the colony they'll know that they're queenless the bees will know that they're queenless this happens because the bees the upper bees can't touch the bees below and share pheromone another reason is to is so upper story and lower story Queens can't touch each other and try to fight you need to make sure that you buy the right type of HDO plywood because some manufacturers use poplar wood and that doesn't hold up the kind we use is made with Douglas fir and works really well we buy it at mid-south lumber near Atlanta and pay around $55 for five-eighths and $60 for 3/4 inch sheets we use oil-based primer and acrylic enamel to seal the end grain in the plywood we feel our version of double screen boards is more solid than the factory made in catalogs if you treat them right they should last for decades there are several ways to make use of a double screen board this is one of my favorite ways it's December right now it's kind of cold a little bit windy and we have these small nooks being overwintered on top of strong colonies we made these up in late summer and install them here in November each from the colony below is coming up through the screen and helps the nuke above stay warmer we have several more videos like this coming out soon if you like this kind of stuff please subscribe send us any questions you might have and we'll do our best to get back with you thank you
