it's simple it's classic it's comforting it's salisbury steak and today i'm showing you how to make it salisbury steak also known as hamburger steak got its popularity from the freezer section it was the hit item in a tv dinner in the 80s you know what i'm talking about but this version is so good i'm also going to give you a bonus recipe my home style mashed potatoes because you can't have salisbury steak and gravy without the mashed potatoes we're going to start by finely chopping a little bit of an onion we're gonna save the rest of the onion for our gravy there was no need to create a new recipe when we have so many good ones on our site the one i'm using today has over four thousand five star ratings and over three thousand comments and reviews i'd say it works just like when i'm making meatballs or meatloaf you don't want to overwork the meat so i like to add most of the other ingredients into the bowl before adding my meat so to the onion i'm going to add an egg and a little bit of worcestershire give that a whisk and then i'll stir in my bread crumbs this recipe calls for seasoned salt which i don't typically carry in my kitchen so i'm using a seasoned breadcrumbs just to kind of substitute that extra flavor that's the base of your mixture now it's time for the beef i'm using a ground round it's going to be so tender moist and flavorful in the end then i like to add the seasonings right on top of the meat so it's just a simple seasoning with salt pepper garlic powder and onion powder at this point you just get in with those hands mix it up so now i'm just going to form it into our patties salisbury steak was created or named after a chemist dr james salisbury who was a big fan of a meat-centric diet especially for the soldiers who were fighting the more you know you can create four large portions or cut them in half and do eight smaller portions and give everyone two pieces each i did a little of both to the skillet we go we're just going to heat up a little bit of olive oil or canola oil get it nice and hot and then we're going to cook these for a few minutes on each side they're going to be pretty much mostly cooked through at that point crusty golden brown that's what you want when they're about two-thirds of the way down we're going to remove them to a plate our meat is resting and we're going to make the gravy now this is what takes this dish over the top we chop up the rest of that onion and add it to the drippings i'm going to add in some butter to the drippings because it's butter the recipe i'm using just has an onion gravy my family happens to love mushrooms so i'm adding them in no harm once our veggies have started to soften we're going to do this just like we do a traditional pan gravy we're going to sprinkle some flour over the vegetables let it cook for about a minute and then we'll add our liquid in for the liquid i'm adding just a dash of sherry and then some good beef broth all right to finish up our gravy before we let it simmer i'm gonna add in a little more worcestershire i like to mimic the flavors that i put inside the salisbury steaks so i'm gonna add a little worcestershire salt and pepper a lot of recipes just stop here if you've kept your steaks warm you can just serve the gravy right on top but you know i like to take things one step further so i'm going to return our steaks to the gravy let them cook for about 10 more minutes i'm going to cover it and let it go while we cook those mashed potatoes in case you missed the video on how to cook potatoes here's a quick tutorial on the perfect mashed potatoes yukon gold's peeled and cut up into cubes i've got them in salted water and we're going to bring them to a boil and let them cook until they're fork tender if you don't have yukon golds you could also use russet potatoes they're going to make a nice fluffy mashed potato i like to cook my potatoes until they're super tender and then i return them to the pot i've turned the burner off but the pot is nice and hot this is going to help any extra moisture evaporate out at this point i like to go ahead and add my butter in as well that way it can be melting into the steamy potatoes you don't want to overwork mashed potatoes because they will get super gummy so i really like to use a potato masher for this you can also use a potato ricer if you don't want any lumps at all i advise against putting mashed potatoes in a food processor that's just a quick way to get some sticky mashed potatoes stir in a little milk and now we're going to season them with some salt and pepper remember we salted our water earlier so you don't want to overdo it on the salt you can always add more but it's real hard to take it away and then i like a good spoonful of sour cream a little taste test nailed it these are gonna go great with that salisbury steak let's plate it up this looks way better than a tv dinner you've got to admit time for that perfect bite you have
