How To Make A Terrarium Without Spending Any Money

what's up guys today I'm going to show you how to make a terrarium for free so the container soil drainage layer and plants are going to cost absolutely nothing and we're in this area there's a very particular plan that I'm looking for [Music] so this is the first plant I'm looking for this is a dog bite and it grows absolutely everywhere in the city I'm sure you could find this in your city and it looks just like this [Music] the next plant is called ivy leaf toad flax or symbolaria Morales and this grows absolutely everywhere too it works great in a terrarium and is perfect for my project today so I'm on my way to Newlands Fish Bar in pershore to get a free pickle jar I feel like the container was the hardest thing to source for free because we can take the plants from outside we can take the soil from outside and even the stones the guy who owns the fish and chip shop messaged me a few months ago offering me lots of free pickle jars and now is the perfect time to go and collect them so that's where I'm heading now [Music] three three five [Music] I want to thank the team at Newton's fish bar for giving me the free pickle jars and the most incredible fish and chips if you need free containers I advise you to go and check out your local fish and chip shop so I've got my container plants and I'm well fed but now I'm off to the woods to see if I can find some substrate drainage and maybe even some Moss foreign [Music] [Music] forest and this is where I'm going to be collecting a little bit of moss it's important when you do collect Moss don't take a large amount from one area if you are going to collect it take very small amounts from numerous areas to allow the Moss to replenish because sometimes it can be very slow growing foreign [Music] [Music] horn and Moss also known as time Moss just off the path I saw that it was loose and I know that this kind of mask works really well in its variant so this is going to be perfect for our build foreign which is it's not like growing anywhere so this is just loose I think that's another good thing if you're in the woods and you are going to take masks perhaps find stuff that's on the path because this would just be trodden on and and ruined so we'll use this in our terrarium so I'm going to take some soil from this mole hill because it's already churned up um it saves me digging into fresh soil it's very cold today so a lot of the ground's actually Frozen now I have a really cool nawaki hori hori which is a Japanese garden tour looks a bit scary ominous but it's a great Garden Tour I'm only going to take what I need but this is really nice churned up topsoil I'm going to mix it with some of the River Rocks that we collect I need to clean this jar it's still got the sticky bit on from the sticker I'll do most of that cleaning when I get back but it also smells with vinegar and onions so it's going to be cleaned in this extremely cold stream I'm also going to collect some River Rocks the drainage layer so wish me luck this this is dodgy well when half is braver than me it's actually not too bad still not getting in there oh that's cold what was I talking about oh all the good rocks are in the middle [Music] oh man these shoes are not waterproof all right that's enough okay oh we found a really perfect spot to make this terrarium we're on a race against the sun really because it's starting to set it's just lovely being here as well I mean check out this Mossy tree we're next to is extremely Frosty and cold but it's still really Pleasant use my scarf to dry out the inside of this pickle jar and then I'm going to prep the plants but I'm going to stress that my hands are really cold so bear with me foreign s and it's time to prep the plants so we've got some either these toe flax which I collected from that wall I've got some of this strain Moss I collected from the past I'll place that just out of the way I've got these lovely dog Violet that's what I'm going to prepare first and when I prepare dog violets what I'm going to do is just trim that Taproot down a little bit by trimming the Tap Root it means that it's going to promote some of those fine feeder Roots um and that's what we want we don't want a long Tap Root we want the fine feeder Roots so I'm going to go with quite a few of these dog violets I just think they're really nice plan and they grow everywhere so Council spray them um so it seems a shame that such a lovely plant just gets sprayed with weed killer when we can add them to our magical little ecosystem our River Stone is going to be the first thing going into last varium and it's stir to wrap the drainage layer now there's a bit of water in here so I'm just going to pour that out usually I'd wash this but I want to admit it's very I'm outside today so it's fine I'm gonna go in with a small layer and this is just going to create a nice air pocket at the bottom of the terrarium the soil I'm using is uh topsoil so perhaps it's not the most ideal kind of soil to use however it's not the way or some of this into the terrarium get rid some of those bigger clay lumps foreign [Music] pretty cool now I've got the Mosses that I've collected from the pathway in this nice area at the front I've got my tweezers with me so I'm gonna use my scissors I'm going to save one piece to use at the back [Music] and the other piece going in just next to it [Music] now time for the dog Violet so I'm just going to make a small hole where each one's going to go where I'm going to position these dog violets really should have bought a pair of tweezers with me but it's fine just have to use this tweezers [Music] cool so that's all the dog Pilots there I'm going to squish this piece of moss just at the back I'm unsure of the botanical name but I've used this species before interims and it works well one is my just a stick it says Leaf side up cool now with the ivory toe flats this is a fast grower I'm going to position this right on top of the Moss at the front and this is a great plant because I'm just going to rest this on top of the Moss and it's going to send out roots I've got just for some decoration Acorn shells and I'm just going to Chuck these in and I found this old snail shell but it's going to be immortalized in this terrarium we'll just Chuck the snail shell in there and a few of these acorns make sure those at the back just adds a little bit of Interest this is I suppose this is a native um terrarium build so it makes sense to have native things in there let's drink an acorn in there perhaps we'll get an oak tree cool so [Music] place the lid on top and we just made a terrarium free so we've reached the end of the video and if you'd like to support me further you can join my
