hi i'm craig phillips and in this video i'm going to show you how to build your own cabinet using recycled pallet wood and the tools you're going to require a chop saw you don't have one a handsaw cordless screwdrivers screws tape measure set square drill bits and some glue now it's up to you how big you want to build your cabinet but i'm going to build mine 600 millimeters high and just 400 millimeters wide the standard slats are 1200 millimeters so i'm going to cut them directly in half so i can get two pieces out of one slat i'm going to use my chop saw if you don't have a chop saw of course you can use your hand saw okay so there's five pieces now cut and i've pushed them all together that's now created me one side which is 600 millimeters high i'm now going to measure across the width of these which comes through 380 millimeters and i'm going to cut two more to fit across here and hold them all together okay so that will be one side now what i am going to do is choose where i'm going to fix these with it being the sides i don't want to fix it flush to the top of there i want to step it back the width of just two of these and i'll explain why a little bit further down the line i'll start by just putting a pencil mark and then same again and up there the pencil mark so that's step me back two widths of this place that along there plenty of glue i want this to be nice and strong glue's under there we've got the face nice and flush there just going to start by putting a couple of little pilot holes in the two end ones so i can squeeze these together and get them fixed down [Music] holding that into position i'll do the same on the opposite end here once you've got them in they're holding them all into position now you can screw the rest of the slats down two screws in each one so that's one side already made up nice and solid you do exactly the same for the opposite side and then you can start doing the top and the bottom now the second side is complete that's exactly the same as the fair side we've done and the bottom of it is more or less exactly the same i've cut these 400 millimeters back to the width that i've chose for my cabinet again i've done five of them and i've got my cross members measured across just like we did on the side to get them to fit nice and snug along here now if you remember we set them ones back two widths of a pallet slat this base will not go new we're gonna have it nice and flush i'm gonna put that together in a moment i'll explain why so same principles mark on here put our glue on the area plenty of glue get nice and strong squeezing them together place that across making sure all the cut ends are nice and flush with the edge of the strip and start to drill your pilot holes on each side first and then we'll continue in the middle exactly like we did on the first side so and that's one base now complete now remember i said putting these nice and flush and then one's weight the reason for this when i place that there my side one now wants to be fitted to here and then this one also is going to be fitted to here what this is going to do put that one down i can explain here what this is going to do is allow that one to sit on top of there we can put plenty of glue in and around there and simply screw that in the sides and hold it upright same again that side then we'll cut a top the exact same principle as the bottom glued and screwed to the top we'll enter your glue on that side put a little bit more glue along that top edge there where these are going to meet here sometimes a little bit tricky to hold these so i'm going to use some clamps squeezes it together for me holds it upright another on the opposite side and as always i'm doing two screws in each pallet slot for extra strength perfect so that's how we attach one side to the base of course we do the exactly the same with that side and then we cut ourselves on top and put that on and screw it all and we create a box now that is one nice and solid rectangular box what we need to do now is make the back of it this is really simple all we're going to do is measure either the width or the length i'm going to use the width because any off cut small bits save and go into waste you can use them up on the back it's not seen very much it works out now about 435 millimeters because we've set it at 400 mil but of course we've got the two sides on it made it a little bit wider i'm gonna cut myself probably seven or eight pieces along there simply glue and screw them down [Music] so that is the back now complete got two sides topper bottom and a back what we want to do now is focus on the front we want to create a door to be able to open on here well first of all we want to construct a frame that goes around here it'll hide all these cut edges and it'll also act as a frame to mount the hinges onto so what we do is we measure our overall width again 435 and our overall length has now become 620 millimeters cut these down to size and they simply will be mounted on the front top and bottom once they're fixed into position we can take a second measurement from here to here and mount them on the side as well likewise with the same as we did on the back plenty of glue pallet drilling the ends and screwing them into the side walls we can even pop a few in the bottom piece as well okay so that's the top and bottom now fitted to here just get my measurements and cut two more pieces to go on the sides double check that they fit in there okay again plenty of glue on the sides this time i'm going to use longer screws i'm going to use 50 millimeter screws because i want them to go right through this side slat and right into the side piece because this is going to take the weight of the hinges for the door making sure it's nice and flush along the sides we will put four in this [Applause] okay so that's now one completed rectangular box to make our cabinet we built a frame around the front next stages is to construct a door in the center of here now of course we don't want to make the door completely tight it needs to have about two millimeters gap either side of course for the hinges to allow to open and close and then of course when it closes we don't want to catch this end so another two millimeters short of that three overall measurements less four millimeters likewise at the top and bottom of the door we cut these slots going up and down [Applause] [Music] now i've cut four slats for the door took my measurements i've allowed a couple of millimeters top and bottom for clearance so it moves but unfortunately the width of these four 310 is a little bit too wide for my opening so what i need to do is predominantly use all three what we don't want is a little small slither cut off there and mounted onto one side aesthetically it won't look nice it needs to be balanced and symmetric so we take our measurement of our opening which is 280 millimeters that's leaving enough clearance gap either side and what we need to do is cut off an equal amount of the two outside edge pieces so we want to get to a 280 opening so that's leaving me with about 10 millimeters to cut off the left hand side 10 millimeters to cut off the right hand side the two center ones stay as they are just these two get our small slither cut off we can do that by using a circle saw or a hand saw now our four pieces the two cuts either side should give me the width that i want for my door opening with a couple of millimeters clear and space either side perfect next stage is cut two more buttons these are going to be the braces that hold the door in position they will be glued and screwed on just like all the sides on top and bottom like this and then we'll also cut a diagonal piece to stop any movement of the door this way as for the brace this wants to be fitted diagonally across all three of the pallet lats so we want to be cutting it in a straight line across this bottom and this top bit so we get our set square although it's not a 45 degree angle i'm just using it as a ruler across the top then same again along the bottom i'm lining that up with that batting on here so if i make them two angle cuts on here hopefully this piece should fit in the center of here we're gonna use the chop saw for this the moment it's set on 90 degrees i'm going to cut a nice square edge but we want to cut it on an angle we loosen it up we pivot the blade around and line it up double check that it is the angle we require once you're happy with that you can look down the side of the blade and if you're happy with that you can fasten it up until you cut whenever you're doing any adjustments on there just make sure it's turned off as well i'm going to plug it back in there's one side on the opposite side should be exactly the same so now my measurements save me correctly this piece should go just in between there perfect ah and that's one door already complete nice and solid we know that it fits in here before we actually put the hinges on and mount this to the frame what i'm going to do is sand down all the outside of it where it's visible what i have done is cut some off cut slats just the width of the inside of here and i'm laying them into position over that bottom batten just to hide it really they're also great but if you want to put a shelf in the center you can just fix a batten around whatever height you choose and simply sit your slats on top you can glue and screw them down if you require or you can leave them loose so they're removable now for door finishes there's a number of different type of hinges that you can use i've chosen these black cast iron ones which i think are fitting for this type of furniture place them into position you want to get relatively an equal size gap between the hinge and the top and also the hinge in the bottom as for the handle of course over to the opposite side a little bit off center a little bit higher up towards the top i think is okay there drill a couple of pilot [Music] holes there we go and then using these black headed screws there we have our hinges and the handles fitted this swinging edge here is now going to be mounted on to the front of here so it opens outwards now to hang the door i'm just using a couple of little off cuts of wood to prop it up a couple of millimeters so when i place that on i get an equal gap top and bottom spread my hinge across and now the handle's on i can actually hold the door more or less in position where i need it screwing the top first line the bottom one off should just slide out double check we're happy that it's opening if you're happy with that put the second screw in the bottom of the hinge and that is your cabinet now complete of course you could wax that or oil it that would really draw the grain out in the natural wood but if you want some more pallet projects please visit the website silverlinetools.com you
