hello everybody my name is Cass Holmes I'm a tutor at West Dean College and during the time we are staying at home I'm going to introduce you to the way I approach my mixed-media collage sketchbooks all you need for this challenge is a sketchbook if you have one scraps of paper will do this is just a small one I carry around a basic drawing here are you usually again have a portable one this one has colored pencils scissors glue stick that really anything you have to hand at home will do you know borrow the children's drawing kit if you need to and I also carry a watercolor set but colored pencils or water-soluble pencils will be fine for this challenge and a reference my references this lovely cup which was gifted to me at West Dean but it might be something from your garden something from me everyday things you happen to have around that's a joy of this challenge just using what you have and some bits of paper collage bits that you can use so see you soon so what I have to the side is this to go kit a few collage elements this cup kindly given to me at West Dean itself and that's fit that figure than my last demonstration at the college yeah so where do we begin the most important thing is just that tree tips and adventure your home can become a place of Investigation and when I'm at West Dean that always feel like I'm very at home there so forgive me for drawing upon that connection I've just had a cup of tea so for me it seemed relevant to bring in that teacup by the way don't worry if you feel you can't draw you've got time to practice and nobody's going to be watching what you're doing so don't worry too much so I'm just good to tear this quite randomly it's not normal or usual for me to practice in front of people in this way so it's to make my sketchbook visible to you I've got handy put stick in this bag so I'll put this piece of cup down we'll just see where we go with it shall we and really I think that's what I would say you know you'll find some magazines have been around your home or bits of paper things that you have around your home you can use try not to overthink it I know it's hard talking and demonstrating is hard too but we'll just see anyway so just put those two bits of collage down to do that it's that's really removing that blank page to begin with and to provide an interesting background oh look this is first experience that's a really good thing to put in place this is my first experience of demonstrating I'm good better with an audience so we'll see we'll see how this goes I might have to do a number two study at this rate like it used to to working and obviously the word Napoli's and where I live in Maidstone we have a strong Nepalese community I'm constantly thinking about how the word things I select as it come into my hand do they have any connection to me I've not really chosen these at this stage other than just to show you the collage methods that I may use it might look a bit untidy but if it's perfect you're not probably will not experiment as widely as you may well do without tearing and cutting and moving things around a little bit so we'll stick another piece down some of you have attended my courses all know that these challenges are often set in quite open ways swapping of materials or something like to do so you lose a little bit of the I've got to do and think oh what can I explore I suppose okay I think these are not to shoddy to side-by-side I sometimes like to do things side by side a small piece of that as I said I'll show you a few of the sketchbook pages at the end but I have in my book just for inspiration and there are artists that you might Mar John Piper's when I greatly admire that could provide additional interest you know you can always message me if you find others that you think I should be looking at or you enjoy looking at just see where you you go Paul Nash is a great painter as well and he he tends to juxtapose quite interesting challenging shapes as he locks them in so it's good to see what happens if I had some paint onto this I might have to sit for this hoping I'm not blocking the view too much I'm just looking to use my hand first of all see if I can redraw that cup that's what happens when I start drawing you know it changes I'll work on the left-hand side one so let's just hope this pen works this is a about a fountain pen but it felt pen pencil whatever you have to work would just see where it goes not very tidy drawing I'm not over worried at this stage gradually you'll see that this one comes to life and you'll have the other one too for comparison when I finished so keep it I'm trying to keep it as short as I can let's extend some of these flowers out this pen should bleed so I'm quite readily when I'm working with my sketchbooks I'm quite happy just to pick up a am so you know it's needle and thread and work straight into them I'm working straight from the palette just for quickness but you can mix your colors there we go and this is just a tiny little watercolor set that one of my students gave me a while ago you see how it starts to take shape I'm blending the color on the page this is just ordinary drawing cartridge but watercolor paper will give you a different effect and you'll find the colors flow but often a good quality drawing cartridge paper see whites works quite well and part of the experimentation is to find out how that paper responds and and can you see how the pen is bleeding and you get some resistance where that cup is I could quite easily when it dries draw back over the top I think I'm there for now I pick this one up again you can see how I've used machine stitch these are more to do with expiration they're not to do with being perfect and to stop but I thought you'd like to see where I'd progressed with that sketch I will show a completed sketch at the end and there are a few of the tools if I pan up around drawing kit etc in the background so the first collage is on the right stage two is on the left with some of the paint when it dries I'll add some color with maybe some colored pencils be kind to us when we're demonstrating it's all new we're all in new territory be kind to yourself yourself to explore that was my first take so I'm not too unhappy with that hopefully see you back at Weston when we're open again [Music]
