what's up guys today I want to show you how to make a strop out of an old leather bill in about ten dollars with the stuff you can buy from Home Depot [Music] here's the things you're going to need an old leather bill some contact cement some metal polishing or buffing compound we're also going to need something to mount the belt to I'm going to use a 2 by 3 for the sake of not using any major power tools in the construction of this strong you could also use a piece of sanded plywood or regular plywood but you're going to have to cut that down now I think by this point you can see where this is going however there's a couple things that I want to point out as we go along and do this I think it's going to help save you from one of those oh crap why did I just do that moment okay so the first thing that we want to do is apply our compound to our belt now I think most belts are going to have a smooth side in the rough side I would recommend using the rough side for your compound we could get into all the specifics on why I would recommend using the rough side but I think that's going to be a topic for another video for 99% of your sharpening needs I would just stick with the rough side so I'm going to use the white compound the white is actually the finest compound that came with this little kit here and a quick note on compounds not all compounds are the same one manufacturers green compound may be completely different than another manufacturers green compound the same with white black red or yellow the only way to really tell how coarse or fine a compound is that to simply test it and compare the results so in order to apply a compound we can simply take a compound and start rubbing it directly into the belt like so kind of like coloring with a big crayon however a better way to do that is to actually heat up the belt with a heat gun if you don't have a heat gun just use a hairdryer set the belt out in the Sun or in a hot vehicle and let it warm up get it nice and warm and it will help the belt take the compound a little bit better and I think you get a better coat of compound applied [Applause] this is using heat this is not using heat [Music] don't worry about all the success we can get that off later it will come off pretty much on our first dropping or our first use of us so now I'm going to go ahead and cut my belt to length that's a pretty sharp knife alright so I already know what some of you are going to ask can you use the belt as is and not mount it to anything and the answer is yes you can use the belt as is however if you're using larger kitchen knives or even axes or chisels it's much easier to go ahead and mount the belt to something solid like a 2x3 it's also easier to maintain a specific angle as you're strapping and I think that gives you a lot more consistent results so what we want to do is we want to mark the width our belt exactly on the 2x4 now this is one of those things that I said would help save you later on hold your belt to one side now the reason we want to do this and not just glue it right down in the middle is because our knife handle would actually interfere with our wood and it wouldn't allow us to get our knife blade fully onto the straw what I'm going to do is actually put a couple X's down here so we know that that's the side to glue we're using contact cement definitely read the directions and follow these to a tee glue the side with our X's like we marked earlier I know this is super exciting so when we do the belt side on make sure that we get all the way up to the edges really well because that's going to be the part that is going to lift up on us in the future okay so it's been about 15 minutes and we'll go ahead and attach the two together now a quick note when doing this once these two halves touch they're pretty much permanent I think it's best to work from one side align one side and then just work it all the way down so now all that's left is to try it out the nice thing about this is it's great for larger blades there we have it guys a strap made from an old leather belt and around ten dollars with the stuff from Home Depot if you like this video please like it please subscribe and let me know what you think in the comments thanks [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
