HOW TO MAKE A DIY PAPER MACHE BOWL | RESTORATION HARDWARE HOME DECOR DIY! Home Decor DIY Dollar Tree

hello everyone and welcome back to my channel i hope that you're doing well if this is my first video you're watching my name is mark and i am so glad that you decided to click on this video and join me for today's home decor diy project today we are going to be making a restoration hardware home decor diy dupe using mainly materials that can be found at the dollar tree if you're not already making a dupe of these restoration hardware paper mache bowls these bowls typically range from 175 to 295 dollars at restoration hardware and as you'll see we are going to be making a very similar look for under 10 in today's project if you've been following my channel for a while you know that i love to get these luxury home decor looks for less whether that means shopping at the thrift stores or trying to diy some of these high-end home decor pieces myself if you enjoy that type of content i definitely recommend checking out some of my other videos and sticking around my channel these paper mache bowls come in two different color ways one with more brown beige and cream tones and the other with some undertones of beige and more gray and stone colors personally i definitely maintain more of a neutral color palette in my own home and i have a lot more gray tones so i am going to be using the photo on the right as the inspiration for my piece first and foremost i am going to run through the materials that we're going to need for this diy project beginning with white paper all-purpose flour joint compound white glue i picked up some of these seed starter pots from the dollar tree i saw someone use these pots as part of their paper mache in a similar video that i'll link down below in the description basically you tear these seed starting pots apart and use them as part of the paper machine mixture to give it more of a brown undertone i'll also be combining these gray and white paints to create some variation that i'll end up painting on the paper mache bowl once it's completely dried i also grabbed this large bowl and some saran wrap to use as a mold for the paper mache bowl i'm getting started by cutting the white paper into long strips and tearing up these seed starter pots from the dollar tree into smaller pieces there is no exact science to this i'm really just cutting them into smaller pieces so that i can put them in a pot of boiling water and boil them for about 30 minutes to soften them up so after about 30 minutes i strained off the excess water from the paper and put the paper into my ninja bullet to blend it up into smaller pieces the more that you blend the paper the less textured and more smooth your final product will be once i'm happy with the consistency of the paper i am just squeezing off any excess moisture that is left in the paper to get it as dry as i possibly can i'm basically wringing out all of the small paper bits in the sink and then putting all of the drier pieces into a bowl so that i can add the next ingredients next i'm adding all of the joint compound and some of the white glue i probably used about three quarters of the bottle of white glue and the goal here is to get the mixture to a cookie dough consistency in all honesty i probably should have added more joint compound as you'll see a little bit later as my piece is drying it almost looks like it's cracking in certain places so i think that adding a little bit more joint compound would have helped with that i'm also adding about a quarter of a cup of flour in the end i probably had about two and a half cups of the mixture and when i do this project again i'll probably make about double this amount so that i can make a much larger bowl more similar to the ones that they sell at restoration hardware but for the purposes of this video i ended up making a slightly smaller version once i had the mixture to that cookie dough consistency that i was looking for i started applying it to my mold i was just using a large bowl with saran wrap wrapped around it so that the bowl would be easily removed from the mold once it was complete and dry now i'm just making a foot for the bowl similar to the bowl in my inspiration photo [Music] the next step for me was to create the beveled detailing around what would become the top of the bowl again similar to my inspiration photo after about three days the piece had completely dried and i was really happy with the way that it was looking i'm really glad that i ended up using some of those seed starting pots from the dollar tree because it gave the piece a bit of a brown undertone that i thought made it look so much more authentic and similar to the ones that were available at restoration hardware now i'm just going in with a darker gray tone and essentially dry brushing the piece to give it an aged and distressed appearance without completely blocking all of the beige undertones that hide beneath the surface [Music] once the dark gray paint was completely dry i went in with this lighter gray tone to give the piece a little bit more depth and dimension once the piece was completely dry i staged it in a couple of different ways to share the final product with you all i hope
