[Music] oh [Music] hey everybody i'm natalia bonner welcome back i'm so excited to be here today and to kind of take a step back and let's focus on some basics today i'm going to officially introduce you to my four in one machine quilting ruler show you some of the basics of machine quilting with rulers and then we're going to hop over to my long arm machine my gamal 22 inch machine and i'm going to demonstrate just a few different designs these are actually some fun designs from my stitch along my 365 days stitch along showing you how to machine quilt with machine quilting rulers so before we do hop over to the machine and i tell you all the goodies all the details about machine quilting with rulers i wanted to actually show you the ruler if you can see it it's a little difficult to see it here on camera because it is a clear ruler but this is the four in one machine quilting ruler now all of my machine quilting rulers are high quality acrylic rulers these rulers are not the same type of rulers as you use for rotary cutting things like that these are thick rulers that are made for machine quilting one other thing i'm going to tell you before we hop over to the machine the markings on my machine quilting rulers are all designed based on your needle position that means if you try to cut your quilt using one of these machine quilting rulers your measurements are going to be completely off however when i show you a little bit of how we use the rulers you're going to see that the markings on the rulers measured out and marked the way they are are awesome so before we hop over there though just to let you know you can pick up my rulers and all the notions that i'll mention here today over on our website peace and quilt dot com let's get stitching machine quilting rulers are different from rotary rulers machine quilting rulers are about twice as thick as rotary rulers mine are all a quarter of an inch thick and the markings generally start at one half inch the markings on the machine quilting rulers are measured from the needle so you can measure distances between stitching lines with the ruler instead of having to mark out every single line machine quilting rulers can be used on long arm machines as well as domestic mid arm or sit down machines if you're using the machine quilting rulers on a long arm machine i highly recommend using an extended base plate around the base of your machine this will create a larger working space and enable you to hold the ruler flat and flush up against the ruler foot when using the machine quilting rulers on a domestic machine you will need to make sure you have a ruler foot a ruler foot is available from your machine quilting dealer and aftermarket ruler feet are also available you'll also need to make sure that you're working on a machine that has the ability to drop the feed dogs and there's at least one quarter inch clearance all the way around the foot additionally when working with rulers on your domestic machine i highly recommend a grip material on the back of your ruler we have this available on our website peace and quilt dot com this can also be used when working on a long arm machine the grip material on the back of the ruler helps the ruler grip onto the fabric and stay a little bit sturdier now in all of my videos i'm not always using grip that's because i use move my ruler so quickly that does not mean that you don't have to use grip or you can't i highly recommend it the rulers that we will be using here are the rulers that i have designed and they are designed for machine quilting since these are my favorite rulers that's what i always recommend however most machine quilting rulers can be used in the same manner you can pick up the rulers plus i also recommend picking up my book visual guide to creative straight line quilting in that book i actually walk you step by step through the basics of machine quilting with rulers plus their 60 awesome designs teaching you how to machine quilt with rulers now let's get stitching i'll begin by using a blue mark big on marker my four in one machine quilting ruler and a little bit of the westerly stable tape on the back of my ruler i'll start out and mark a straight t through the center of my block and also an x through the center of my block starting in the lower corner i'll stitch point to point lines so using the largest curve on my four in one machine quilting ruler i'll stitch a curve from the outside of the block to the inside point once i reach that inside point i'll adjust my machine quilting ruler and now i'll use the medium curve on my machine quilting ruler and stitch point to point from the center of the block to the outside from the outside i'll adjust my ruler and stitch a second curve to the inside i'll repeat that same process working my way all the way around the outside of the block just remember as you're stitching any design with machine quilting rulers you always want to hold your ruler a quarter of an inch away from where you want your thread to intersect [Music] [Music] [Music] i'll begin stitching near the bottom of my block i'll use the largest curve on the four in one machine quilting ruler and stitch from one side of the block to the other side of the block a nice curved line once i reach the opposite side of the block i'll stitch along the ditch moving up a half an inch i'll lay my four in one machine quilting ruler so that the first marked line on the large curved side of the ruler intersects my previous stitch line i'll stitch another curved line across the block i'll repeat this process until i've filled in the block completely stitching along the ditch from there i'll travel along the ditch all the way around the block to the opposite lower side of the block from there i'll repeat the same process stitching that curve beginning at the bottom of the block and working all the way across the block this is where the gorgeous cross hatching really comes to life [Music] so [Music] so [Music] to stitch out the vertical straight lines on a square quilt block i will just use the markings on my four in one machine quilting ruler the markings on the ruler are all marked in quarter inch increments and remember as you're using the machine quilting ruler the measurements are measured from your needle position i'll start out by stitching the first straight line lining my one half inch mark up with the left side of my quilt block it does appear to be the right side here in the video from there i'll stitch from the top of the block to the bottom travel across the bottom ditch move my ruler over so that my one half inch marked line is right on top of that first stitched line from there i'll stitch back to the top of the block [Music] when i reach the top of the block again i will travel across the ditch moving my ruler over so that my half inch marking lines up right on top of my previous stitch line i'll repeat that process moving my way across my block up and down all the way across the block until i've filled in the block completely after i've stitched all those straight lines i'll stitch in the ditch all the way around the outside of the block you
